Chapter 5 – Unraveling Threads Luna POV I woke up to the sound of my heartbeat. Not the gentle rhythm it used to be. This one pulsed like a war drum. The air in my room shimmered faintly—like heat waves. My palms were warm, too warm. And when I exhaled, I swore the breath left my lips in a swirl of frost. Fire and ice. I was a contradiction. And it was getting worse. I stood before the mirror. My hair had grown longer overnight—waist-length, wild, streaked with faint silver. My pupils weren’t fully human anymore either. Slitted slightly, like a fox. My magic was growing. But I didn’t feel powerful. I felt unstable. A knock broke the silence. It was Ivy, dragging in a tray of breakfast and looking like she hadn’t slept either. “Okay, Miss Lava Hands,” she said, dropping the tray. “We need to talk. Now.” --- Ivy POV Let’s rewind. I came here to check on my best friend. I did not come here to: Find out she’s the heir of a fox-vampire bloodline Get dragged into a wolf mansion Find out I’m a witch And, oh yeah—be mated to a six-foot-five glowering Beta with the personality of a thundercloud. “Have you told anyone about your magic?” I asked Luna, who was now levitating a spoon with her freaking mind. “No. Not yet. You?” I sighed. “You know Kane?” “The terrifying Beta who stares like he’s mapping escape routes in his head? Yeah.” “Apparently... he’s my mate.” Luna choked on her tea. “WHAT?!” “Yup,” I said, popping a grape. “The universe has jokes.” Truth was, Kane looked at me like he could smell my soul. And every time he got near, my pulse did weird things. Things I hated. Things I loved. But I wasn’t going down without a fight. --- Zane POV I felt Luna’s energy spike from the second floor. It was wild. Pulsing. Chaotic. Like a storm threatening to crack open the sky. She was changing. I could see it in the way the pack reacted—some with awe, some with unease. The elders whispered. Even my father had started asking questions he never would’ve dared ask a week ago. And Kane? He was busy arguing with Ivy in the hallway. “You can’t just throw fireballs at people, Ivy.” “It was a spark, Kane!” “It hit my shirt!” “Well, your shirt had an attitude!” I pinched the bridge of my nose. “This place is becoming a circus.” Kane just shrugged. “You brought home the fox-vampire girl. I brought home the witch. We’re even.” I sighed. “We’re doomed.” --- Kane POV I don’t know how it happened. One minute I was doing drills, focused on Luna’s protection, and the next—boom. Witch. My mate. With a mouth sharper than her spells and a glare that could melt steel. Ivy wasn’t like the usual women around the pack. She didn’t cower. Didn’t beg. She challenged everything. And despite myself, I liked it. But she was a witch. Her blood was old, wild, unbound. The Council would see her as a threat. And worst of all? Every time she walked away from me, my wolf howled. “Stop pacing,” she said now, stepping into the training yard where I stood alone. “I’m not pacing.” “You’ve made a trench.” “I’m thinking.” “Thinking or brooding?” I turned to her slowly. “My wolf wants you.” She blinked. “Charming.” “I’m serious.” “So am I. My magic doesn’t know what to do with you. Every time you’re near, my energy stirs like it’s trying to escape.” That made my heart stutter. Because it wasn’t just magic. It was fate. And it was pulling us closer. --- Luna POV Later that evening, I joined the pack for dinner—if you could call a six-course magical feast under floating lanterns "dinner." Zane sat beside me, his knee brushing mine, grounding me. But I could feel something shifting in the air. My powers weren’t the only thing waking up. Danger was coming. I could feel it. And I wasn’t the only one. Across the table, Lyra stiffened. Mira dropped her fork. Raven's eyes glowed faintly. “Kai,” Lyra murmured, “did you feel that?” He nodded. “Something crossed the border.” Zane stood. “Get the guards.” Suddenly, Kane’s voice cut through the tension. “We’re not under attack.” Everyone paused. He looked at Ivy. “She’s awakening.” Ivy blinked. “Wait, me?!” Her hands were glowing. “Her magic just flared,” Kane said. “She’s syncing with the land. It happens with witches this strong.” Ivy stared down at her hands. “Am I... going nuclear?” “No,” I said, placing my hand over hers. “You’re becoming what you were always meant to be.” --- Zane POV Later that night, after the chaos had quieted, I found Luna on the balcony. She looked like a queen carved from moonlight—hair dancing in the breeze, eyes glowing faintly blue. “You’re scared,” I said softly. She didn’t turn. “Not for me. For Ivy. For everyone. I don’t want to hurt anyone.” “You won’t.” “You don’t know that.” I moved closer, wrapping my arms around her from behind. “I do.” She leaned back against me. “You sound so sure.” “I’m the Alpha. It’s my job.” “Is it your job to make my heart do backflips, too?” I smiled into her hair. “That’s just a bonus.” --- Kane POV I found Ivy in the greenhouse, arms crossed, pacing among glowing herbs. “You’re not sleeping,” I said. “Neither are you.” I hesitated. “You scared earlier?” She shook her head. “No. I’m angry.” “At?” “Destiny. Magic. You.” “Me?” She stepped forward, eyes flashing. “You make my skin tingle. My power rises when you’re near. And worst of all—you smell like home. I hate that.” I closed the space between us. “Then hate me up close.” And when I kissed her, she kissed me back—fire and fury and fate all wrapped in one
