Chapter Twenty-Six

Bel was unusually quiet all Thursday afternoon, Bee noticed. It was true that they hadn’t seen a great deal of each other that day, but still, when Bee had seen her sister, she’d hardly said a word and had seemed preoccupied.
After dinner, Bel came up to their room and actually laid down on their bed. Bee came right over. “Are you unwell?” She put a hand on her sister’s forehead.
Bel lifted it off with a laugh. “I’m perfectly fine, I assure you. No need to worry. I just want to take a little nap before the festivities of the evening, that’s all.”
“What festivities are those? Aunt Claire said we were going to have some quiet evenings for the rest of this week until it’s time for me to ‘arrive’ in town with Lady Sorrell.”
