Chapter 4:Silent control.
I started waking up earlier than usual, but I did not feel rested. Even before my alarm went off, I was already tense. The days were the same, my apartment was the same, but something in the air felt heavier. I could not explain it.
Selena noticed it too. She had always been careful with her words, but lately, her observations felt sharper.
“Ruby,” she said one morning as I poured coffee, “you have been at the office late a lot. Are you okay?”
“I am fine,” I replied quickly. I did not want her to worry more than necessary.
“You look tired,” she added. “You seem distracted.”
“I am just busy,” I said. “There is a lot to finish.”
Her eyes stayed on me for a moment longer.
“Make sure you are taking care of yourself. Do not ignore your own needs.”
I nodded.
Selena had always cared about me, even if her way of showing it sometimes felt like scrutiny. I appreciated her most of the time, but now, with everything feeling off, her attention made me notice things I had ignored before.
Henry’s presence was changing too. He did not call constantly or demand my time, but he had started leaving little messages, subtle suggestions, and questions that made me pause.
One evening, I received a message from him.
“Ruby, you should not stay at the office so late. Come home soon.”
I frowned. He rarely told me what to do. I typed back quickly, trying to sound casual. “I am finishing reports. I will be home soon.”
A few minutes later, another message arrived. “I know work is important, but you need to remember what really matters. Do not let anyone distract you.”
I put my phone down. It was not rude, but there was a weight behind his words. There was pressure I could not ignore.
The next night, he suggested dinner. I agreed, telling myself it would be normal.
He arrived on time, polished and smiling. I tried to relax.
But as soon as we sat down, he began pointing out things he thought I had done wrong.
“You should not have stayed late yesterday,” he said calmly.
“I had reports to finish,” I replied quietly.
“It is not just about finishing work,” he said. “Some people can influence you in ways you do not notice. You have to be careful.”
I nodded, unsure how to respond. His words sounded like care, but there was a sharp edge to them. I could feel it pressing down, even though he did not raise his voice.
Over the next few days, the subtle control became more noticeable. Messages about who I should spend time with, comments about how I handled a project at work, suggestions about what I should wear for meetings. At first, I told myself he was just protective, but the more it happened, the heavier it felt.
Selena noticed it too. One evening at dinner, she asked casually.
“Does he ever make you feel uncomfortable?”
“No,” I said quickly. “He is careful. He is just concerned.”
Selena pressed her lips together. “Concerned can mean a lot of things. Keep an eye out.”
Her words stayed with me all day. I wanted to trust Henry fully, but the small instructions and careful observations made me uneasy.
**********
“Ruby,” Clara said one afternoon, pulling me aside, “you seem tense. More than usual. Are you sure everything is okay with Henry?”
I shook my head. “I do not know. Everything looks fine, but it is complicated.”
Clara leaned closer. “You can tell me anything. I am your friend, Ruby. If someone is making you feel trapped or uneasy, I want you to know you do not have to deal with it alone.”
Her words felt like relief. For the first time in weeks, I did not have to hide my unease. It reminded me that while Henry’s behavior was becoming controlling, there were people around me who could notice and offer support.
Later that week, I stayed late at the office again, finishing reports. My phone buzzed with a message from Henry.
“You are working too hard. Take a break. Do not let people influence you negatively.”
I sighed. His concern felt like control. I did not want to argue, but I could feel the walls closing in.
That evening, I left the office feeling exhausted and unsettled. I could not stop thinking about his messages, Selena’s warnings, and Clara’s concern. As I walked toward my car, I noticed a man standing near the garage entrance, looking at some papers. He glanced up as I approached.
“Ruby Alex?” he asked.
I stopped. “Yes?”
I had wanted to come around a long time ago but each time I see you pass by ,I'm always distracted. My name is Benson, we attended the same school together but we weren't so close then.
“Ben…... .son” I said slowly. “The name sounds familiar,” I said.
“Yes, we'll get to meet later, be good, I need to go now.” he said and left.
I blinked at him, unsure what to say. There was something calm and steady in his eyes. For a moment, I felt relief.
“Thank you,” I said. “I appreciate it.”
He nodded once and walked away. I watched him go, thinking about the strange timing. How did he know where I worked? Why had he appeared just when I was feeling cornered?
That night, I sat on the couch staring at my phone. Henry’s messages, Clara’s concern, Selena’s watchfulness, and now Benson’s unexpected presence crowded my thoughts.
I realized I could not ignore the tension building around me anymore. Things were changing, slowly but surely, and I had no idea how far they would go.
I picked up my phone one last time before bed. A message from Henry blinked on the screen.
“I hope you are thinking about what matters most. I want you safe, Ruby.”
I did not reply. I set the phone down and leaned back. The calm I had taken for granted was gone.
Tomorrow, I told myself, I would pay closer attention to everything. Deep down, I knew that what was coming next would not be small. The next few days would show me exactly how far this situation could go.
