THE SECRET BEHIND MY DEATH

1797 Words
“Now,” my father said, staring directly at Lucian, “tell me why my daughter was supposed to die on her wedding night.” Nobody answered. The courtyard was completely silent. Rain poured from the dark sky, soaking everyone who stood beneath it. I could hear my own heartbeat as I looked between the two men standing before me. My father. My husband. Two men who had apparently known the truth about my death long before I did. Lucian finally lowered his eyes. “I was protecting her.” My father's expression hardened. “By killing her?” “You don't understand.” “I understand perfectly.” My father stepped toward him. “You watched my daughter get dragged into that courtyard. You held her hand while they prepared to execute her. You watched her die.” Lucian's jaw tightened. “I had no choice.” Those words again. I felt something inside me break. “Everyone keeps saying that.” They both looked at me. I stepped closer to Lucian. “Tell me the truth. Why did you let them kill me?” Lucian looked into my eyes. “The Council ordered your execution.” “What Council?” “The five ancient families who control the supernatural kingdoms.” My father interrupted. “They were afraid of what you would become.” I frowned. “What would I become?” My father reached into his coat and pulled out a small silver pendant. The moment I saw it, my breath caught. I knew that pendant. My mother used to wear it. She wore it every day when I was a child. My father placed it in my palm. “Your mother left this for you.” I stared at him. “Why?” “Because she knew one day you would need to remember.” I opened the pendant. Inside was a tiny black stone. The moment my fingers touched it, a violent pain exploded through my head. I screamed. The world disappeared. I saw my mother. She was running through a dark forest, carrying a baby. Me. Behind her, several men were chasing her. “Take the child!” My mother turned around. “No!” She ran faster. The vision changed. My mother stood beneath a blood-red moon. My father was beside her. She was crying. A woman wearing a black cloak stood several feet away. “Kill the child before she awakens.” My mother pulled me closer. “You will never have her.” The vision shattered. I opened my eyes and collapsed into Lucian's arms. “Elara!” I pushed him away. “What was that?” My father stared at the pendant. “The memory your mother sealed inside it.” “Why would she hide it?” “Because she wanted to protect you.” “From what?” My father hesitated. “Your blood.” I stared at him. “What is wrong with my blood?” He took a breath. “You are not an ordinary werewolf.” “I know.” “No.” His voice became softer. “You don't.” He looked at Lucian. “Tell her.” Lucian remained silent. My father's expression darkened. “She is the last Moonblood.” The name meant nothing to me. “What does that mean?” “The Moonblood were the first supernatural bloodline. Older than the Alpha Kings. Older than the Council.” He pointed toward the silver moon above us. “They were chosen by the Moon itself.” I laughed nervously. “This sounds like a fairy tale.” “It isn't.” My father looked at me. “You are the last Moonblood.” I felt the ground beneath me shift. “And what exactly can I do?” “You can control ancient magic.” My father's eyes moved toward the broken stones around us. “And if your power fully awakens, no Alpha in the world will be able to stop you.” I looked at Lucian. “Is that why they wanted me dead?” “Yes.” “Is that why you married me?” His face changed. “No.” “Then why?” Lucian stepped toward me. “Because you're my mate.” I shook my head. “You knew before we married.” “Yes.” “And you knew what I was.” “Yes.” “You lied to me.” “I was trying to protect you.” I laughed bitterly. “You keep saying that.” Lucian looked broken. “I loved you.” “Then why did you let me die?” His voice dropped. “Because the blade wasn't meant to kill you.” I froze. “What?” “It was enchanted.” My father nodded. “The blade erased your memories and sent you into a magical sleep.” I stared at Lucian. “You knew I would survive?” “I hoped.” “Hoped?” His eyes filled with tears. “I wasn't certain.” My chest tightened. “So you gambled with my life?” “Yes.” I turned away. “I hate you.” He swallowed. “I know.” A loud horn suddenly echoed across the kingdom. Everyone froze. My father looked toward the palace gates. “They've arrived.” “Who?” “The Council.” We heard thousands of footsteps approaching. Then the gates opened. An enormous army stood beyond them. At the front was a woman wearing a silver crown. Queen Seraphina. The same woman who had once attended my wedding. The same woman who had watched me die. She smiled when she saw me. “You finally awakened.” My blood ran cold. “You knew?” “Of course.” She stepped forward. “You were always the greatest threat to our kingdom.” My father moved in front of me. “You will not touch my daughter.” Seraphina laughed. “You protected her for twenty years.” Her eyes narrowed. “And look where that got you.” My father growled. Seraphina raised her hand. The army behind her moved forward. Lucian stepped beside me. “Stay behind me.” I shook my head. “No.” “Elara.” “I am done hiding.” Silver light began glowing beneath my skin. Lucian stared at me. “Elara, control it.” “I don't know how.” “Then listen to me.” His hand closed around mine. “Breathe.” I looked into his eyes. For a moment, everything disappeared. The army. The Council. My father. The fear. There was only him. Then a voice whispered inside my head. “Elara.” I froze. I knew that voice. “Mother?” Lucian looked at me. “What happened?” I didn't answer. My mother's voice came again. “Trust your mate.” Tears filled my eyes. Then her voice became weaker. “But never trust his blood.” The silver light around me suddenly exploded. The ground cracked beneath my feet. Every wolf in the courtyard dropped to its knees. Seraphina stepped backward. “No…” My father stared at me in horror. “She has awakened.” The sky turned silver. The moon grew brighter. A powerful wave of energy swept across the kingdom. I felt something ancient rise inside me. Something that had been sleeping for twenty years. I raised my hand. The entire army stopped moving. I looked at Seraphina. “You wanted me dead.” She stared at me. “You don't understand the power you've awakened.” “Maybe not.” I stepped forward. “But I'm going to learn.” Seraphina's expression changed. For the first time, she looked afraid. Then a voice came from behind her. A deep male voice. “Don't be so confident, little Moon Queen.” Everyone turned. The wolves parted. A tall man walked through the army. He had black hair. Silver eyes. And a crescent-shaped mark across his chest. Lucian froze. His face became completely pale. “Father?” I looked at him. “Your father?” Lucian couldn't speak. The man smiled. “My son.” He looked at me. “And my future Queen.” My heart stopped. I looked at my father. He was staring at the man with pure hatred. “You're supposed to be dead.” Lucian's father laughed. “Apparently, death has been very generous to our family.” He raised his hand. Hundreds of warriors stepped forward. My father immediately grabbed his weapon. “Everyone, prepare yourselves.” Lucian moved closer to me. “Stay beside me.” I looked at him. “Why?” “Because I don't know what my father is planning.” His voice dropped. “But I know it won't end well.” I looked at the army. Then at Seraphina. Then at Lucian's father. Everyone had lied to me. Everyone had hidden pieces of the truth. But now I finally understood why. My blood wasn't just powerful. It was dangerous. And everyone wanted to control it. My father stepped toward me. “Elara, whatever happens, do not open the Moon Gate.” I frowned. “What Moon Gate?” His face went pale. Lucian looked at him. “It's too late.” “What are you talking about?” My father looked at the sky. “The Moon Gate is already opening.” A deep rumble shook the ground. The clouds above us began to split. A giant circle of silver light appeared in the sky. Everyone stared upward. Seraphina smiled. Lucian's father raised his sword. My father whispered: “Run.” But I couldn't move. Because inside the silver circle, I saw something. A shadow. A woman. She looked exactly like me. She had my face. My eyes. My hair. But she was wearing an ancient crown. She looked down at me. And smiled. Then she spoke. Her voice echoed across the entire kingdom. “You took twenty years to awaken.” My heart stopped. She lifted her hand. “Now we can finally finish what your mother started.” The Moon Gate opened completely. And every wolf in the kingdom screamed. Lucian grabbed my hand. “Whatever you see…” He stared into my eyes. “Don't trust her.” I looked at the woman in the sky. Then I heard my mother's voice one last time. “She's not your enemy.” I froze. My mother's voice continued. “She is you.” The world went silent. I stared at the woman in the sky. She smiled. And then she stepped through the Moon Gate. Straight toward me. TO BE CONTINUED…
