The email was short.
That was the first thing I noticed. I had been bracing for something formal and long, full of the kind of language institutions use when they want to say as little as possible while using as many words as they can. But it was short. Eight lines, maybe nine. I read it twice before I trusted what I was reading.

*I am writing to sincerely apologize for the inconvenience I caused you. The decision made regarding your suspension was one I should not have made, and I take full responsibility for it. You are no longer suspended from school. I humbly request that you return and continue your classes at your earliest convenience. I am truly sorry for the disruption this has caused to your studies and I hope we can move past this matter.*
