Jaren's eyes scanned the café, his expression tense. "This isn't a secure location for this conversation," he said abruptly. "I'll arrange a more private setting." Without asking for her consent, he called his driver and instructed him to prepare one of his nearby residences. Ava felt a surge of unease as she realized she was being whisked away to Jaren's private lair. As they waited for the driver to arrive, Ava's mind raced with questions. Why was Jaren being so secretive? What did he have to hide? And why was she agreeing to this? When the driver arrived, Ava hesitated, feeling a sense of trepidation. But Jaren's firm grip on her elbow reassured her, and she reluctantly followed him to the car. As they drove to Jaren's residence, Ava's nervousness intensified. She couldn't help but wonder what lay ahead. Was she walking into a trap, or a revelation? Ava's eyes widened as the car pulled up to a majestic mansion, surrounded by lush gardens and a private lake. The sheer scale and opulence took her breath away. As they stepped out of the car, a small army of workers and staff emerged from the mansion, their faces expressionless. They bowed their heads in unison, avoiding eye contact with Jaren, their fear and respect palpable. Ava felt a shiver run down her spine as she realized the extent of Jaren's power and influence. This was a man who commanded loyalty and intimidation in equal measure. Jaren led her into the mansion, the interior just as impressive as the exterior. Ava's eyes darted around, taking in the priceless artwork, the lavish furnishings, and the eerie silence. They entered a grand study, the walls lined with books and a massive desk at the center. Jaren gestured for her to sit, his eyes never leaving hers. Ava felt like a small animal in the presence of a predator, trapped and at his mercy. Jaren asked Ava if she needed anything, and she replied, "Just a glass of water, please." He called out to the cook, who promptly arrived with a chilled glass of water. As Ava sipped her water, she noticed a commotion among the staff. They whispered and glanced her way, their eyes filled with curiosity and suspicion. The staff's whispers and speculation grew louder, their eyes fixed on Ava. "Who is she?" "What is she doing here?" "Is she the new mistress?" Ava's face flushed as she realized she was the subject of their gossip. She felt like an outsider, trapped in a web of secrets and lies. Jaren's motives remained unclear, but one thing was certain - she was in the midst of a storm, and the truth was yet to be revealed. Jaren's voice was firm as he instructed his staff to wait outside. "I want privacy," he emphasized, his eyes locked on Ava. The staff reluctantly filed out, their whispers and glances lingering in the air. Ava felt a sense of unease as the door closed behind them, leaving her alone with Jaren. "I have reason to believe my father has a spy among my staff," Jaren explained, his voice low and cautious. "I can't risk anyone overhearing our conversation." Ava's mind raced as she processed this information. A spy? Jaren's father must be desperate for information. Just then, Jaren's phone buzzed. He hesitated, his eyes flicking to Ava before answering. "Yes, Father," he said curtly. Ava's heart raced as she realized Jaren's father was on the other end, likely inquiring about her presence in the mansion. She felt like a pawn in a game of power and deception, unsure of what Jaren's true intentions were. Jaren's eyes clouded as he began to recount the events of that fateful day. "I was twenty years old, Ava. My mother and I were in a car accident. She...she didn't survive." Ava's heart went out to him, her eyes filled with compassion. "I'm so sorry, Jaren. That must have been devastating for you." Jaren's voice was laced with pain. "It was. But what's even more devastating is that I just recently discovered the truth about the accident. My stepmother...she was the one who caused it. She wanted to get rid of my mother, and she nearly got rid of me too." Ava's eyes widened in shock. "That's horrific! How did you find out?" Jaren's face twisted in anger. "I've been investigating, trying to uncover the truth. And what I found out...it's been eating away at me. My stepmother's actions, they...they led to my illness, Ava. The brain damage, the memory loss...it's all connected to that accident." Ava's mind raced as she pieced together the puzzle. Jaren's stepmother, the one who had been so sweet and charming, had a dark secret. And Jaren, he had been living with the consequences of her actions for years, unaware of the truth.
