Chapter 2: A Desperate Leap
Ava had been searching for a job for what felt like an eternity. Her savings were dwindling, and her parents were breathing down her neck to find a stable career. The pressure was suffocating her.
As she sat in her small apartment, surrounded by rejection letters and empty beer cans, Ava felt her anxiety spiral out of control. She had just received another rejection email, and the frustration was too much to bear.
In a moment of desperation, Ava grabbed her phone and began to scroll through job listings, her eyes blurring as she read through the endless requirements and qualifications. She felt like she was drowning in a sea of disappointment.
As she scrolled, her eyes landed on a notification from a job search app. "Personal Assistant Wanted," the headline read. Ava didn't even bother to read the details. She just clicked "Apply" and sent off her resume, hoping for a miracle.
The next morning, Ava woke up with a pounding headache and a dry mouth. She groggily reached for her phone and saw a string of notifications from the job search app. Her heart skipped a beat as she read the messages.
"Hello, Ava. We would like to schedule an interview for the Personal Assistant position."
Ava's heart raced as she read the message over and over, her mind racing with possibilities. She didn't even remember applying for the job, but she didn't care. She was desperate, and this was her only hope.
With shaking hands, Ava typed out a response, agreeing to the interview. She didn't even know what the job entailed or who the employer was, but she was willing to take the risk.
As she hit send, Ava felt a glimmer of hope for the first time in months. Maybe, just maybe, this was the break she needed.
Ava's hands trembled as she held the phone, her mind racing with thoughts of the interview. She had heard rumors about the CEO of Voss Brewing Co., Jaren Voss - his intimidating presence, his piercing gaze, his ruthless business tactics. She wasn't sure if she was ready to face him.
"Hey, girl! What's wrong?" her best friend, Mia, answered on the first ring.
Ava took a deep breath and poured out her concerns. "I got a job interview at Voss Brewing Co. tomorrow, but I'm freaking out. I've heard the CEO is super intimidating."
Mia's laughter calmed Ava's nerves. "Well, first of all, you need to calm down. You got this! Just be yourself, and dress to impress. Get something nice, a nice cologne, and high heels. You want to make a good impression, right?"
Ava nodded, even though Mia couldn't see her. "Yeah, yeah. I guess you're right."
"Of course I am!" Mia said. "And hey, even if the CEO is scary, just remember that he's still human. He probably just wants someone competent to work for him. So go in there, show him what you're made of, and own that interview!"
Ava smiled, feeling a bit better. "Thanks, Mia. You're the best."
With renewed determination, Ava hung up the phone and began to prepare for the interview. She spent the evening researching the company, practicing her responses to common interview questions, and picking out a sleek black dress and a pair of high heels.
As she lay in bed that night, Ava felt a sense of trepidation but also a glimmer of hope. Maybe, just maybe, this was the start of something big.
Ava was already running late, and the long queue at the fueling station wasn't helping. She tapped her foot impatiently, watching as the minutes ticked away. Just as she was about to reach the front of the line, a sleek black GLE sped into the station, screeching to a halt just inches from her car.
The fuel attendant rushed to attend to the newcomer, leaving Ava fuming. "Hey, I was next!" she protested, but the attendant just shrugged apologetically.
Ava's anger boiled over as she approached Jaren's car. She rapped on the window, her knuckles white with tension. "Roll down your window!" she demanded.
Jaren's eyes met hers, a hint of amusement dancing in their depths. He obliged, lowering the window with a languid motion.
"You think you can just cut in front of me and get special treatment because you're rich?" Ava snapped, her voice low and venomous. "Well, let me tell you something, buddy. Money doesn't impress me."
Jaren's expression remained neutral, but Ava detected a flicker of surprise in his eyes. "I apologize if I inconvenienced you," he said smoothly.
But Ava was beyond reason. "Inconvenienced me? You think that's all this is? You're not even going to pay for your fuel!"
Jaren's gaze never wavered, but he didn't respond. Instead, he put his car in gear and drove off without paying, leaving Ava fuming and frustrated.
"Hey! Come back here!" she shouted, but he was already gone, leaving her to wonder what had just happened.
As she stood there, seething with anger, Ava realized that she had just made a grave mistake. She had let her emotions get the better of her, and now she was left looking like a fool.
But little did she know, this encounter was only the beginning of a tangled web of events that would change her life forever.
Ava was still fuming as she refilled her tank, her mind replaying the encounter with Jaren. She couldn't believe the nerve of that guy!
As she finished up and prepared to leave, the fuel attendant approached her, looking apologetic. "Hey, I'm so sorry about what happened earlier. That guy...he's my boss, Mr. Voss. I had to prioritize him, I hope you understand."
Ava's eyes widened in shock. "Your boss?! That's Jaren Voss, the CEO of Voss Brewing Co.?"
The attendant nodded, looking sheepish. "Yeah, that's him. He's...um...quite particular about his time."
Ava's anger and frustration gave way to disbelief. She couldn't believe she had just had a run-in with her potential future boss! And what a horrible first impression she must have made!
Feeling flustered and embarrassed, Ava quickly paid and left the fueling station without another word. She couldn't get out of there fast enough.
As she drove away, she couldn't shake off the feeling that her life was about to take a dramatic turn. Little did she know, this was only the beginning of a wild ride.
