Chapter 7: The Steel Voice The Great Dining Hall was thick with a stifling silence that pressed down on more than a thousand wolf lungs. Hundreds of eyes, all narrowed and intently fixed, followed Elena’s every move under the flickering, faint iron chandeliers. An undercurrent of stunned disbelief, coupled with an unspoken, potent resentment, rippled through the rows of long, dark wooden tables. Elena tilted her chin up, kept her shoulders square, and refused to be dwarced by the suffocating gazes. On her left, the pungent scent of raw jealousy and hatred assailed her like a physical blow. Chloe, seated near the head of the table, dug her immaculately manicured fingernails into the dark wood so deeply her knuckles had gone bone-white. Her face was contorted into a mask of pure fury, and she was gasping for air, her eyes riveted on the crimson silk wrapping Elena’s slender body. Her father, the pack’s beta, sat beside her, his thick arms crossed tightly over his chest. His hardened gaze was filled with a chilling, dangerous disdain that promised violence. Kaelen’s eyes completely ignored the wave of judgment pulsing through the hall. His iron grip on her hand remained, never loosening. With a slow, dominant stride, his heavy leather boots hammered against the stone floor, leading her down the rows of staring wolves, toward the raised stone dais at the very end of the hall, dominated by two formidable thrones draped in midnight black fur. He guided her to the right-the Bloodmoon Luna’s throne, a high-backed imposing seat lined with dark fur-and waited until she was settled before taking the master alpha throne next to her. The instant Kaelen settled onto the throne, he emitted a low, subtle, and utterly dominant pulse of energy, the vibration rippling through the room and forcing every wolf in attendance to dip their head briefly, instinctively, in submission. “Eat,” Kaelen ordered, his voice deep, a rolling thunder in the deafening silence. Slowly, ever so slowly, the clattering of heavy plates and the low murmur of whispers began to fill the cavernous space again. Yet, the air still crackled, a tight, stretched bowstring waiting to snap. Elena sat rigid, her fingertips resting on the carved wooden arms of the Luna’s throne, acutely aware of the mocking smiles of the old council elders at the head table, the venomous sneers from Chloe’s cohort at the lower table. They were waiting, biding their time, looking for any sign of weakness, for an opportunity to expose the lie of an unshifted human sitting above them. Several heavy courses into the meal, the abrupt, sharp rasping of a wooden chair against the stone floor silenced the whispers nearby in an instant. The Beta rose to his feet. Lifting his silver goblet, a thin, forced smile stretched his lips, though his cold eyes were utterly emotionless. He surveyed the heads of the council, ensured he had their full attention before directing his hostile gaze to Elena. “Alpha Kaelen,” the Beta said, his voice raised and amplified, projected clearly to the warrior tables near them, “it is a truly special occasion that you have returned from your endeavors on the northern front. Your achievements have greatly extended the territory of the Bloodmoon pack, but as your beta and the voice of the council elders, it is our duty to ensure the long-term stability and security of this pack.” Kaelen shifted back in his throne, his jaw tightening, his amber eyes narrowing to the dark slits of a predatory beast. He said nothing, but a palpable coldness began to emanate from him. The Beta took a slow, deliberate sip from his goblet, his smile widening to a chilling sneer. “These are dangerous times, Alpha. Our dushman neighbours are agitated and watching us from the shadows, waiting for any lapse in our strength, any sign of instability at the helm. A pack like ours requires supreme, unwavering strength.” He turned his cold stare to Elena, his contempt for her open and absolute as he gestured towards her with his silver chalice. “And it is because of that that the burning question for every warrior in this hall is this: Alpha, the dushman packs on our borders have eyes on the Bloodmoon pack. Will a female who can’t even shift offer any protection? Is she worthy of being our Luna?” A crushing, suffocating silence descended once more upon the hall. Chloe’s smirk grew wide and cruel as she leaned forward in her chair, eyes gleaming, practically begging Elena to cry and flee. The elders nodded sagely, their gazes filled with silent accusation. Kaelen’s chest rose, a terrifying, guttural growl building in the back of his throat, and his fingers gripped the arms of his throne so tightly the ancient wood splintered under the force of his immense strength. He was about to unleash hell. But before he could unleash the bloodlust that was simmering within him, before his aura could consume the room, Elena moved. With an unnervingly fluid grace she hadn’t known she possessed, Elena stood up from her throne. A collective gasp sucked in by the inhabitants of the head table. Kaelen paused, his golden eyes snapping to her, his features frozen in disbelief, and watched as his mate rose, standing perfectly tall and straight, unsupported by anyone. Elena refused to lower her eyes. Refused to let her voice waver, or falter, or shake. Half-stepping to the forefront of the dais, she fixed the beta, his cold blue eyes staring blankly into her own… no, the opposite; his own eyes focused, intensely as ever on Elena's icy gaze. Her eyes were such pure, unadulterated ice they made him flinch, his arrogant smirk faltering. "You speak of strength and vulnerability, Beta," Elena declared, her voice echoing, resonating and vibrating with an unfamiliar and pure strength that filled the silent hall, seemingly without effort. "And yet your understanding of a Luna's true duty seems to be as barren as your regard for the traditions of the Goddess of the Moon." A sharp intake of breath followed at the neighboring tables. Not a soul – that meant literally every single person in this thousand-strong hall – had ever dared to breathe even a syllable of such outright and brazen rebellion against the pack's most high-ranking official, let alone utter it to his face. Chloe's jaw hung limp, her wide eyes, completely devoid of comprehension, fixated on the girl who for years she had tortured with petty schoolgirl games. Elena took a full step towards the front of the dais now, one hand lightly resting on the heavy silver necklace hanging against her collarbones, the gargantuan, smoothed piece of polished ruby gleaming like captured light. "You think the duty of a Luna is measured solely in the number of throats she can rend from an enemies' neck. And what is the purpose of a mindless, brutes that know only blood eventually? We will only destroy ourselves internally." Elena threw her head back slightly, the authority flaring in her eyes, speaking words to the beta that hit him squarely in the face. "Ek Luna ka kaam sirf dushman se larna nahi, balki pack ko ek rakhna hota hai. Agar aapka gussa aur jalan aapko dushman se zyada andha kar chuki hai, to kamzoor main nahi, aap hain." An instantaneous, dead and terrifying silence descended upon the Great Hall, smothering it in its grip. The beta stood perfectly still, his features slowly draining of colour, then blooming into an apoplectic, furious purple, mouth working silently without utterance, utterly and completely shamed by the runt he had so gleefully trod on. Chloe's mouth was still hanging agape, her hands trembling with a pure and potent rage, pinned against the table beside the whimpering beta. Tears leaked from her eyes, unable to move as the suffocating pressure of kaelen's aura slammed into her, as they could see it happening to everyone. Next to her, a different atmosphere suddenly pulsed into existence. Kaelen stood. A dangerous, absolutely terrifying smile began to bloom across his hard features. He looked at Elena, and the golden fire in his eyes ignited into an unholy, feverish obsession, a lust she hadn't encountered since she was a child. He hadn't come to her defence; he had attacked her opposer with his bare words. The raw, volcanic hunger Kaelen was feeling quickly became a surge of pure dominance. Without the slightest warning, Kaelen unleashed his True Alpha Aura; no more subtleties, no more gentle nudges, just pure and unbridled raw power slammed into the Great Hall. Air vibrated with intensity, the solid stone walls seeming to thrum, the oak tables groaning under the overwhelming and intense pressure. "You heard your Luna," Kaelen rumbled, his voice deepening to a hellish roar that buckled the knees of every single wolf, causing them to fall forward onto the cold stone floor, heads bowed as their spines creaked at an angle of agony. Kaelen stepped off the dais, his terrifying form looming over the shuddering and frantically vibrating Beta, who knocked his knees together like a scared child, fighting to resist Kaelen's massive, awe-inspiring presence as it bore down on him. "Down," Kaelen ordered, his one word a physical blow that struck the Beta’s knees, cracking wood on stone with a sickening splinter. The Beta crumpled, falling face first onto the floor in the center of the Great Hall, head pressed into the dust with chest heaving, fighting for each breath beneath Kaelen’s feet. Chloe, still plastered against the table beside him, let out a choked whimper, unable to move, to cry, to do anything but fear. Kaelen’s golden eyes surveyed the thousand-strong pack sprawled before him, his voice a thunderous pronouncement of finality. "Understand this all of you," Kaelen snarled, wrapping one hand around Elena’s waist and drawing her close, claiming her, standing her protectively in front of him for the entire pack to see. "Elena is your Luna. Her word is my command. Her breath is my peace. And from this moment forward, any that dares to look upon her with eye of disrespect, anyone that dares to utter a single whisper against her status will not be banished. You will face my wolf. And I will personally tear your bloodline from the history of this territory. Bend the knee to her, and you bend the knee to me. Choose now... Or choose your graves." Slowly, from the front line of elites down to the cowering omegas by the far door, one by one, the entire Bloodmoon Pack yielded. No single wolf was able to remain seated as they collapsed, their chests touching the stone floor, offering up their bare throats to the human girl standing beside their Alpha. Elena looked out over the mass of bowing heads, the heavy silver necklace cool against her skin. The hiding days were over. The pack had bowed. The Alpha was hers.
