Chapter 9: The Puppet Master’s Trap “We aren’t here for the Alpha... We’re here for the Luna.” The final, cruel whisper from the spy-hanging on the frosty air like a noose around your soul. In that heart-wrenching sliver of time, it was as if the courtyard below dipped below the freezing point. Kaelen’s already grim expression warped into something positively demonic, the molten gold of his eyes turning into an unholy, incandescant fire. Within the confines of his skull, the wild wolf, driven insane by the threat of Elena, let out a terrible, all-consuming primal howl that threatened to tear apart the very foundations of the pack house. Before the spy could finish his raspy, hollow laughter, Kaelen had become a blur of pure, unadulterated destruction. A hulking, clawed hand, sharp as a sharpened steel dagger, shot out like a viper, clamping around the spy’s throat. A powerful twist of Kaelen’s massive shoulder followed, accompanied by a sickening snap that echoed throughout the silent courtyard. The spy’s malicious smirk froze on his lips as his neck snapped like a dry twig. Kaelen threw the limp body onto the snow-streaked stone like a discarded rag, his broad chest heaving as a low growl rumbled from deep within his enormous frame. “Alpha!” the lead warrior gasped, instinctively backing away, his bared neck exposed to the crushing, oppressive force of Kaelen’s aura. “Summon the elite commanders,” Kaelen growled, his voice dropping into a chilling, gravelly monotone. “Double the patrols on all borders. If so much as a leaf on the eastern ridges moves without my knowledge, the heads of the entire vanguard will adorn the spikes. My mate is the lifeblood of this territory. Anyone who dares to breathe her name with evil intent will die. Do I make myself clear?” “Yes, Alpha!” the warriors echoed back in a thunderous roar, melting away into the shadows. Kaelen stood alone in the torchlight, fists clenched, his mind a raging tempest. His violently possessive wolf was a snarling inferno, burning in his chest, demanding he bury Elena in the deepest possible crevasse, away from the enime. His crown was no longer the sole target; her life was. The next morning, golden rays of the sunbeams touched upon the Bloodmoon estate, utterly unaware of the poisonous tendrils of darkness creeping throughout the house. Within the cavernous space of Kaelen’s study, the Alpha paced before a grand, arching window, arms folded across his broad chest, dark brows furrowed in an expression of weariness that radiated from his very core. Sleep had been an elusive companion all night. A soft, timid rap sounded against the heavy oak door. “Enter,” Kaelen commanded. The door swung inward to reveal the Beta framed within, an expression of carefully orchestrated concern etched across his face, his downcast eyes masking a predatory gleam of wicked amusement. He approached with a deliberate gait, stopping a respectful distance from Kaelen’s imposing desk. “Alpha Kaelen,” the Beta stated, his tone dripping with false solemnity. “I’ve heard of the breach on our eastern borders last night. Word of what that vermin whispered before his execution has already spread through the council elders. The pack is in an uproar.” Kaelen turned his angular face towards his second-in-command, his amber eyes narrowed to two icy slits. “If you are here to question the Luna’s standing again, Beta, you might consider the future of your lineage.” “N-No, Alpha, I beg you,” the Beta stammered, his head bowing lower, effectively concealing the sinister curve of his lips. “After the remarkable display of power last night, I can see my error. The Luna has the spirit of a queen. That is precisely why my heart aches with worry. The enime packs are insidious, Alpha. They know she cannot shift. In the crowded halls of this vast pack house, amidst the endless stream of servants, there are far too many blind spots where an assassin could strike without notice.” Kaelen’s jaw tightened. The Beta’s words tapped into the gnawing paranoia that had been clawing at him relentlessly. The Beta took a subtle step closer, his voice softening into a seductive whisper. “Alpha, this pack house is too open at the moment. Every elder, every warrior, has access to these halls. If the enime has set their sights on the Luna, she is exposed here. I think you should send them away from the pack house, to our safest and oldest outpost, for a few days until we finish off the enemy.”He paused, allowing his trap to sink in. “The hidden cabin in the whispering, It’s secluded, heavily fortified, and completely detached from the pack’s political intrigue. Only your most trusted, hand-picked guards will know her location.” Kaelen fell into an unsettling, heavy silence. His mind was a battlefield. The Beta wasn’t entirely wrong-the pack house, brimming with wolves who harbored an unsettling disdain for Elena, was a volatile environment. Relocating her to a remote, fortified secret outpost seemed like the most rational choice to keep her safe. The Beta, completely unaware he was leading her straight into the perfect Beta-bait, nodded. “The carriage can be prepared. My elite guard will escort you there however.” “No one else needs to know where it is.” “Of course, Alpha,” the Beta replied, the bow was so deep he nearly lopped off his own head as he retreated backwards from the room, a gleeful skip already making its way towards his chest. It had begun. Back in the Alpha’s chambers Elena stood before the imposing mirror with a hand idly tracing over the soft sheen of last nights dress, still in a daze at the life she was living, the Alpha’s mate. A click came from the door as it opened and Kaelen walked in. At the sight of him, breath hitched in her throat. Gone was the ever effortless and predatory grace replaced by something dark, suffocating. His jaw was tight and clenching. He strode toward her, the huge expanse closing quickly. “Kaelen? What is it?” she breathed out, instinctively feeling the danger radiating off of him. “What happened last night?” Kaelen didn’t answer for a moment. He reached out with large calloused hands and enclosed her waist pulling her until she pressed against his chest with no space left. He buried his face in her neck inhaling the rain and mint until he could begin to feel the beast within settle. “There was an attack on the border last night, Elena,” he finally rasped out, words tight with controlled, desperate urgency. He stepped back enough to meet her gaze, golden eyes locked onto hers with almost animalistic intensity and possession. “We caught a spy from the Frostclaw pack. He confessed their objective before I ended him.” He swallowed, his fingers tightening around her waist. “They aren’t coming for the territory, little wolf. They’re coming for you. They want to hit me through your lack of a wolf.” Elena’s blood chilled. The raw, brutal reality of the supernatural world hit her like a truck. She wasn’t some overlooked abused servant anymore, but the prize to be taken down to hurt Kaelen. Still, looking into Kaelen’s raw and troubled eyes, something flickered within Elena, that tiny spark of steel grew and she didn’t flinch, didn’t cry. She raised a small, soft hand and wrapped her fingers firmly around his thick, calloused wrists. “I’m not afraid, Kaelen,” Elena said, voice clear, firm and confident. “I know what you are. I know what this pack is. Most importantly, I know you won’t let them hurt me. Main aap par poora bharosa karti hoon.” At hearing her words, a profound wave washed over Kaelen. He bent, forehead touching hers, his breath hitching. “I’ll burn this whole north down before I let anyone touch you, Elena. But for your protection, I can’t have you in the pack house, it’s far too vulnerable.” He turned her hand, tracing the delicate line of her wrist where the budding bond throbbed like a pulse. “I’m sending you to an isolated outpost in the mountains. A cabin secluded from everything. My most trusted warriors will accompany you, and I will stay here and hunt every rat of the Frostclaw pack down, until this territory is clean. As soon as they are no longer a threat, I will personally come and get my Luna.” Elena’s chest tightened with a longing at leaving him, but she understood. Squeezing his hand back, her eyes shone with unquestioning trust, “If you think it is best, Kaelen… I will go.” Kaelen pulled her into a long desperate kiss, sealing his promise in the stolen quiet of their chamber, utterly oblivious to the festering betrayal bubbling in the shadows.
