Chapter 15 - The Forbidden Lineage Rotten, stinking, putrid air clinged to the whispering trees. The forbidden lands; a land where the rule of Alphas never apply. This far into the tainted lands had neither Beta and Chloe dared to venture into. Ever had the Beta and Chloe dare to venture into the shadows of there pack. They were desperate. The Shattered glass, the crumbling hand of Alpha Marcus that fell into Elena's grasp, it was burned into the Beta's sanity years ago. He was crazy, a wolf in servents clothes, This was a war that won't be won by teeth and claws, but by a something far older and more sacred. They reached a grotesquely twisted, hollowed tree, tangled in thorny dark vines. From the mist came three shadowy like figures, dressed in soot- stainedthreadbare cloak of rot. The rogue witches. These were just stories spoken to lull children to sleep. Monstrous beings that had been banished for there vile, evil, dark magic by the very first High Alpha. "you bring the bloodmoon pack stench into our sanctity, Beta," hissed the witch, a sound that scrapped against the betas ear drums like the scratching of dry bone. Her eyes white orbs that rolled back and forth inside her hollowed out skull. "State your purpose before you are swallowed by the shadows. The Beta gulped, stepping forwards, grasping a small picture of elena stolen from the inner chambers, " I want to know what she is" he demanded with a shaking voice. " she looks like a shifterless human, an inconsequential servant but she contains a terrifying, silent power that could fracture an Alpha's bone with the touch of a feather. Tell me how to get rid of her." The eldest witch reached a boney long finger and traced the image of elena's face with her long black finger nail, and at the touch of skin against painting, the air inside the hollow tree grew cold and three shrieks pierced the air like celestial fire, the eldest witch recoiled from the picture and it tumbled to the damp floor below, falling onto the knees, rocking back and forth. " What is it! What did you see?!" Cried out Chloe, her heart pounding against her chest. "fools! You have summoned the wrath of the gods upon our heads!" Screamed the youngest witch, grabbing her face "she is not human! She is not a wolf!" The eldest witch looked up to stare at the Beta, and in her white, blind eyes was an awe that made his very being vibrate, " she is the beginning and the end. She is the last of the ancient silver wolf." the Beta gasped for air. " The Ancient Silver wolf?! It's a bedtime story! The first bloodline died thousands of years ago!" "It's not a story you buffoon!" Spat the witch, her voice trembling. "The silver wolves were the very first creation of the moon goddess. They were not blessed because they could turn into beasts, but by there blessed immortal souls and spirit. They did not require a wolf form to command the universe. She is a living god. Should she awaken, the very pack structure would be flattened before her feet." the world had tilted on its axis, the girl he had starved, the woman he attempted to capture, was of divine blood. " Then how do we stop her?" he pleaded, grabbing at the witch's cloak, " There must be a way! I'll be killed if she takes the crown!" The eldest witch torn her from his grasp with a malicious grin on her wrinkled features, reaching into the folds of her robes, she produced a small vial filled with glittering, ash-gray dust. " the bond of the modern wolf is created by domination," the witch cackled. "The alpha must believe he is the sole protector and supreme ruler of his mate. Kaelen is a prideful alpha, if he believes his human servant is in fact a celestial being and an ancient force that surpasses him by far, his ego would shatter, and his bond with his mate would irrevocably break by the sheer weight of her divinity. This powder is derived from the roots of a Weeping Willow, blow it into her face when you are in front of Kaelen and it will shed the mask of man and beast, and reveal the monstrosity within. Once he sees the beast behind the maiden he will cast her out." The Beta snatched the vial, his heart alight with desperate hope. " expose her... Shatter the bond...yes... That's how we'll destroy her." While Beta and Chloe crept through the dim and shadows of the forbidden woods, the pack house of the blood moon pack was bursting with jubilation, for tonight was the night of the Luna ascension ritual, where a new mate is officially inducted into the inner circle of the pack, hundred's of pack members flooded the brightly illuminated courtyard, the flickering light from the braziers danced across their faces. Kaelen stood proudly on the stone platform, adorned in his alpha robes, his golden eyes burning with pride, beside him stood Elena, small and silent, shining in her simple white gown. Hidden among the crowd were Beta's loyal guards and a group of treacherous elders, they whispered to each other, unaware of elena's bloodline. They were unaware that beta had not returned with any information about elena and that they saw her as just a small insignificant human. " just watch," sneered one of the treacherous elders, his grin wide and all-encompassing, " The new Luna has to touch the Ancient Soul Stone to measure the light emission of a werewolf soul, when she touches it, it will remain dormant showing she is nothing but a pitiful failure." the crowd fell into a respectful silence, the pack shaman emerged from behind, pulling out an ancient, ornate box. He opened the lid, revealing a huge, unrefined obsidian stone with celestial runes embedded within its dark surface. It was the ancient soul stone, renowned for its bright radiance when in contact with a powerful werewolf. " Come forward, elena" Kaelen's voice rumbled, as he took her hand and squeezed it warmly. The stone meant nothing to him for elena was all he required. Elena gave a small, timid nod to Kaelen, playing the role beautifully. She took slow, faltering steps towards the altar, her eyelashes fluttering as if she were trembling with the fear of the weighty stone. The traitorous guards leant closer with wide, triumphant smiles spreading across their faces, eager for their moment to mock and jeer as soon as the stone rejected her human touch. Elena came to a halt in front of the obsidian artifact. Her dark eyes flitted across the runes adorning it. She knew what this artifact was. It was a crude implement designed to measure the pathetic, mundane, finite spiritual energy of a normal shifted werewolf. Slowly, she reached out a delicate, pale hand. Her fingers hovered above the cold, black surface of the artifact for only a moment, her enormous, ocean like stores of Ancient Silver Wolf energy sealed securely behind walls of absolute control. Then, she laid her hand flat upon the center of the Ancient Stone. A collective held breath fell across the courtyard, the silence absolute. One second passed. Two seconds. Three seconds. The stone remained dark. It did not hum, did not pulsate. None of the runes glowed. It looked no more significant than a chunk of dull, black coal glinting under the moon. A collective murmur ran through the members of the pack and the traitors exchanged smug, victorious smiles with swelled chests. See? They knew it all along. A broken, empty, human. The shaman frowned and adjusted his glasses, his eyes narrowed as he stared at the unresponsive artifact in bewilderment. He had never encountered a being, any being, that had rendered the stone inert. What the wolves and traitors didn’t know-what their tiny brains couldn’t even begin to comprehend-was the reality of what had actually occurred. Elena had not failed the stone. The stone had failed her. Her ancient power was so immense, so cosmic, so immeasurable that the primitive artifact was completely unable to comprehend, process, or store it. To measure Elena’s soul with a standard werewolf stone was akin to measuring the depth of the entire ocean with a single droplet of water. The inner workings of the stone had shut down completely, and to be frank, it should have imploded from the sheer power overload it had experienced in attempting the measurement. Elena slowly retracted her hand and her previously sad and devastated face morphed instantly back into one of feigned heartbreak and utter dejection. She looked down at her hand, biting on her lower lip and then back at Kaelen. "I... I'm so sorry, Kaelen," she whispered with her voice trembling. "It appears... Appears that the stone doesn't recognize a weakling like myself." Seeing her evident heartbreak, Kaelen’s protective instincts burst into their full, raging force. He paid no mind to the dark stone or the gossiping whispers of the pack as his massive frame blocked her from the curious, invasive eyes of the pack members and his arms securely embraced her. "Enough!" Kaelen’s authoritativealpha bark boomed across the courtyard, quashing the murmur and forcing the traitorous elders to bow their heads in fear. He looked down at her with his golden eyes blazing with fierce, unyielding devotion, "That stone means nothing. You are my mate, Elena, and you are the only Luna this pack will ever have.” Elena buried her face in his chest, her shoulders shaking as if she were crying tears of genuine sorrow. Kaelen tightened his hold on her and whispered comforting words in her hair, completely ignorant to the true events. Hidden away in the secure warmth of Kaelen's embrace, Elena opened her eyes again and glanced around the courtyard to meet the gleam of the Beta's hidden loyalists who sneered in the shadows. The feigned sorrow left her face, replaced by a chillingly serene smile and the gleam in her eyes turned an icy, silver hue. The secret had been preserved tonight. Her power had not been revealed. But as the heat of the ancient stone finally dissipated from her skin, Elena knew the game was almost over. The wolves were playing with fire and hadn’t the faintest idea that they were standing in the presence of the sun.
