I pushed open the door to the director's office.
Inside was complete chaos.
Noah, the patient's son from Bed 12, had Hunter by the collar and roared in his face, "If anything happens to my father, I'll bury this whole hospital with him!"
Aria was huddled on the sofa in the corner. Her hair was disheveled, and two buttons on her white coat were missing, as if Noah had just shoved her. When she saw me come in, she put on a frightened act.
Hunter shoved Noah aside, pointed a finger at me, and shouted, "Victoria! Look at the mess you've made! Get on your knees and apologize to the family immediately! If you don't handle this properly, don't bother coming in tomorrow!"
I ignored him and walked straight up to Noah. "How is the patient right now?" I asked. "Did he pull through?"
Noah's eyes were red as he raised his fist to hit me.
The office door was pushed open again. My fiancé, Aiden Knight, rushed in.
He was still carrying two fancy gift boxes. Clearly, he wasn't here to see me; he was here to give Hunter gifts and curry favor.
He worked as a medical device rep, currently racking his brains trying to secure the cardiac surgery department's equipment deal.
Aiden sized up the situation in the room. Without a word, he rushed over and forcefully dragged me aside. He warned me through gritted teeth, "What trouble have you caused now? I just got on Hunter's good side—are you trying to ruin my business?"
"Stay away from me," I said coldly. "You disgust me."
This was the man I had been blind enough to fall for in my previous life. When disaster struck, he didn't just abandon me—he held me down to use me as a stepping stone.
Before I could shake him off, Aria chimed in at just the "right" moment. "Victoria, I know you've always disliked me," she said, "but you can't gamble with a patient's life..."
I turned and advanced on Aria step by step. "You said I switched the medicine? Fine. What time? Where? What medicine was switched? Which cabinet did it come from?"
Aria retreated a step, her gaze beginning to dart about. She swallowed hard, forcing herself to stay calm. "It was... three in the afternoon... in the satellite pharmacy of Building 3... I saw it with my own eyes..."
I let out a cold laugh and looked directly at Hunter. "Since she saw it with her own eyes, this should be simple. Hunter, please call the security department right now and pull up the security footage from the satellite pharmacy in Building 3 at three o'clock this afternoon. Who took the medicine will be plain to see."
At these words, there was no panic in Aria's eyes.
Hunter slammed the table and pointed at me again, cursing. "Victoria, quit playing dumb! You dared to switch the medicine there because you knew the cameras couldn't catch you!
"The Security Department announced in our department messaging thread last week that the camera system's main board for the corridor and satellite pharmacy in Building 3 burned out, and the repair budget still hasn't been approved!
"You deliberately chose a blind spot with no surveillance to commit your crime, and now you're falsely demanding to check the footage. Do you take us for fools?"
Hearing Hunter's words, Aria put on a tearful, aggrieved act. "Victoria, so you knew all along that the surveillance there was broken... No wonder you acted so brazenly... I saw you switch the medicine with my own eyes, yet you still want to deny it..."
When Noah heard that the "surveillance was broken," he was convinced that I was exploiting a loophole and became even more agitated.
Hunter pounded the table again. "Victoria! The evidence is irrefutable! I'm warning you—settle this privately right now! Otherwise, I'll report you directly to the hospital's ethics committee and have your medical license revoked!"
I looked at their ugly faces, sneering inwardly.
I took out my phone and dialed the city health department's whistleblower hotline. "Hello, I would like to file a formal complaint. At Lakewood Hospital's Cardiac Surgery Department, someone is maliciously framing and making false accusations, intending to create a major medical incident."
