4 Finding My Safe Home

After driving all night I pull up to a gas pump and park getting out to stretch my body. Rachel gets out on her side and rubs her eyes.

“Where are we?” She asks looking around.

“Just outside Portland Oregon.” I tell her and reach into my bag grabbing my wallet. “Here go pay for gas only use my debit card if absolutely necessary. Should be plenty of cash.” I hand her my wallet and she heads into the gas station while I pull my cell phone out and turn it on. I ignore all the messages and pull the torn off paper that Marina slipped me the day her and her family were forced to leave The Burgundy River Pack by Nikki because she had tried to stop her and her clones from beating me. Dante found them another pack but Marina slipped this paper in my pocket with her number on it. I dialed the number as Rachel handed me a cup of coffee and my wallet and went to pump gas.

** PHONE CALL **

It only rings twice

“I knew you’d call me in the next few hours. How are you sis?” Marina asks and hearing her voice makes me smile.

“Better now. I’ve missed you.” I reply.

“Me to Leah so much. Rachel with you? Where are you?” She blurts out and I’m not sure I should tell her I don’t want to put her and her family in Dante’s sights.

“Leah. Don’t go there. Now tell my daughter where to pick you up so we can get you home. Alpha Jacob can’t wait to meet our two new pack members.” Maria (Marinas mom) comes on the call and says dating me to argue. I know better.

“Yes mama.” I say.

“That’s right. I can’t wait to finally have my other two daughters home.” She says before hanging up and Marina and I laugh.

“We’re at a shell station right outside of Portland.” I tell Marina who gets excited

“Don’t move.” She tells me “Well move your car into the woods and grab your things Gino and I will be there in 5 mins.” She hangs up and I get in my car feeling calm for the first time in awhile. I drive the car as far into the woods as possible as I tell my sister what’s going on. We quickly grab our things and I toss my phone into the car before heading back to the station.

“THEREE YOU ARE.” Marina runs over hugging me and since I’m not guarding myself I can’t help the growl of pain that escapes as she presses my sore back. She jumps away before giving me an angry look I know isn’t directed at me. “Seriously Leah it never stopped?” I look at the ground.

“No it got worse but she’s ok Marina.” Rachel tells her and Marina hugs me softly.

“You’re so strong Leah. I’m so mad they did that to you.” She says. I hug her back and we separate only to hear two growls and we turn to see Rachel and Gino staring at each other.

“MATE” Gino growls

“MATE” Rachel replies and suddenly she’s in his arms as they kiss passionately and Marina and I laugh.

“Didn’t see that coming.” I say smiling genuinely thrilled my sister found her mate and he’s such a great guy.

“Yeah nope wouldn’t of called it in my lifetime but it makes sense.” Marina observes. “ Alright you two save it until we get to the pack house Alpha Jacob is waiting.”

Gino places Rachel on her feet taking her hand in his and shoots me a dopey grin. “Glad you made it Leah. We’ve been worried.” He says and hugs me softly. Marina and I take the back seat of the Yukon while Gino opens the passenger door for my sister and kisses her sweetly once she’s settled before closing the door and getting in the drivers seat. We drive down the road for a few miles before taking a almost hidden left turn onto a well used dirt road. I roll down the window and inhale the smell of the forest. It’s so clean and fresh here compared to home. I can actually smell the ocean which immediately makes me remember that intoxicating scent I caught as we were fleeing the Burgundy River pack. What was that? I’ve never been so overwhelmed by a scent and at the same time calm. I shake off the memory knowing it doesn’t matter now and turn to my best friend. I see an uncomfortable look on her face.

“Spit it out Marina. It’s written on your face.” I tell her. She exchanges a look with Gino in the rear view mirror.

“Dante called Alpha Jacob late last night demanding to speak to me. When I got to Alpha Jacobs office and took the phone, Dante was angrier than I’ve ever heard him be. He demanded to know where you were. When I said I had no idea, he went off about I better not be lying because they were searching everywhere to find you and they’d be here eventually.

“Why is he trying to find me so hard?” I ask “Something is up. He should be happy I’m gone “

“I have no idea but we won’t let him take you back Leah you’re safe here.” She says as Gino parks in front of the pack house. We all step out of the Yukon and I look at the beautiful pack house. It’s mate of logs but huge and there’s at least 20 windows on the front showing 5 floors. The bottom has stone base and there’s no question that it was built with care and attention. It’s also well taken care of. While the pack house of The Burgundy River pack was kept dark and almost like a secret this pack house welcomes the outside.

“Beautiful right?” Marina says beside me and I nod

“It’s stunning.” I reply.

“How kind of you to say. You must be our newest pack member, Leah right?” I look over to see a man who appears to be not much older than the rest of us standing on the porch of the pack house with a warm smile.

“Yes I’m Leah and you’re Alpha Jacob.” I reply and he laughs.

“That is correct.” He says coming over to shake my hand. “Welcome to the Silver Lunar pack Leah and Rachel. We’re happy you’re here.”

“Thank you Alpha.” Rachel and I both reply.

“Leah I do need to speak with you if you wouldn’t mine joining me in my office.” Alpha Jacob says.

“I’ll catch up with you guys after ok?” I tell Marina, Rachel and Gino before following Alpha Jacob inside and into his office. I close the door behind me and sit across his desk from him. This office doesn’t feel purposely intimidating like the Alpha office at home. This is def an alphas office but you can tell Alpha Jacob truly cares about his pack and each of its members.

“You are an impressive and caring Alpha. I’ve never met an Alpha like that.” I say without thinking and then look down in embarrassment.

“I’ll take that as a compliment.” He laughs

“I meant it as one.” I say

“You’re impressive also. I’ve been informed of what you’ve been through Leah I hope you aren’t upset but I asked Maria so I could make the right decision on whether to accept you to our pack. I have to protect everyone and all I knew was you were escaping another pack. He says

“I understand completely and I’m not upset. This past year has been unimaginable but I have no problem telling you anything.” I reply which makes him smile.

“Thank you Leah. You do need to be aware that Dante has called again just a few mins before you arrived, to inquire if we’d heard from you to which I replied no. He is currently on the road searching every pack and inch of this country.” Alpha Jacob gives me a no bullshit look. “Do you know why he’s so insistent on taking you back?”

“Alpha I’ve been trying to get that answer since he had his security chase us last night.” I say “Dante and I fell in love in high school and he was sure we’d end up mates until his 18th bday when he found his true mate. He did say he didn’t want to be without me but that was before all the abuse I suffered. I don’t know any other reasoning.”

He smiles warmly.

“He won’t get you here. Dante is the worst kind of Alpha. He’s selfish and immature. He lets his mate do anything her selfish self wants and isn’t observant enough to actually protect his pack members. “ he says and he’s absolutely right. “For the time being I’d like you to stay here in the pack house. Maria informed me you had almost graduated to be a pack doctor so I’d like to offer you the opportunity to finish out your schooling while interning at our pack hospital with our doctor. What do you think?”

I’m so excited I jump up and grin.

“That would be amazing thank you Alpha.”

“Good you can begin interning tomorrow and we’ll get you started at the university.” He says walking to the door. “Please don’t hesitate to let me know if you need anything else and Lorie will show you your room so you can settle in and relax until dinner at 630pm.” We shake hands once more and I follow the Omega upstairs and into a large bedroom with the biggest bed I’ve ever seen. It has a burgundy down comforter and all my things are hanging in the closet. The bathroom as a four head shower and jacuzzi tub. I walk to the window and am thrilled to see it looks over the driveway and looks at whoever stops by.

“If there’s nothing else I’d like to return to my chores.” The Omega stated and turns to leave but not before she growls

“Obviously a slut who’s sleeping with Alpha Jacob which is why she isn’t an omega.” She says under her breath.

“Are you truly that stupid as to suggest Alpha Jacob sleeps around and I’m his mistress he moved in?” I ask without turning from the window.i don’t have to look to know she’s frozen in terror. “We’ll answer the question.”

“Go now” I reply and she rushes away. I settle into my room and then Marina gives me a tour of the pack house and territory including the hospital and university before we get cleaned up and head for dinner. We arrive and sit down at the table with Marinas family, Rachel and two wolfs I don’t know. The one who sits on my other side gives me a smile.

“We’ll you must be Leah the new pack member.” He says with a deep southern accent that makes my center wet. His gorgeous blue eyes intrigue me. Hey has shaggy black hair that looks hot. “I’m Austin”

“Nice to meet you.” I say and we spend the entire meal laughing and getting to know each other.

The next few months are amazing. I have been taking the last two credits I need for my degree and interning with Dr Heath who is the head pack doctor and will be retiring once they find a replacement. After the first two weeks after I’d arrived Alpha Jacob lifted my house arrest and even though I chose to stay there instead of moving into Marinas family’s home a few miles away I have complete freedom.

I’m walking back to the pack house after my 12 hour shift at the hospital when I hear my name.

“My eyes what’s happening to me?” I ask as I meet his eyes.

“Wow when did they change?” He asks me.

“They were dark blue like always before my shift at the hospital. I only just noticed they’d changed when I was getting cleaned up for dinner.” I answer “Do you know what’s happening Alpha?”

He looks at me and I know he’s thinking so I just sit quietly.

“I have a theory Leah but I’d like to do some research before I share it. Is that alright?” He says with his warm smile and I immediately feel better knowing he’s looking into it and I smile and thank him. We hear the dinner bell and head to the dining room together. I sit in my normal spot with Marina on one side and Austin on my other.

“Everything alright?” Austin asks me over mind link and I smile at him

“Yes I just needed to talk to Alpha Jacob and almost forgot.” I answer and I turn to give Marina a “I’ll tell you later look.” Nobody mentions my eyes changing but I know Maria and Marina notice. I dig into my ribeye steak and loaded baked potato and chat with the table.

“Just a moment Alpha Dante I’m taking the phone to Alpha Jacob right now. It is dinner time.” I hear and jerk up to see Alpha Jacobs assistant rushing over to him holding the phone before covering the mouth. “ Alpha he insisted he speak with you immediately.”

Alpha Jacob looks at me in worry and gives me a tight smile before taking the phone and answering. I realize the entire room has gone quiet and everyone is listening to the conversation. I am aware that the entire pack has been told of my past and they’ve all volunteered to keep me safe and protected. I’ve never felt so cared about.

“Hello Dante. What’s so important it couldn’t wait until I finished my pack dinner?” Alpha Jacob asks putting the call on speaker so I can hear every word which I appreciate.

“Jacob my apologies for the interruption I’ll keep my call brief.” Dante replies but he doesn’t sound like the Dante I’ve known my whole life. There’s an anger and a coldness in his voice that makes me shiver. I don’t know him anymore. Marina warps her arm around my shoulders and rests her head on my shoulder and it makes me smile. “I wanted to let you know we will be arriving at your packs territory tomorrow afternoon and would appreciate rooms and dinner to be provided for us.” It’s not anything but a demand and even though I’d expected to be scared I feel calm and a bit angry. Let him come. There’s no way I’m leaving. This is my home.
