Chapter 35: Hunting Lord Class Monsters

1190 Words
Inside an underground bunker, Hannah had just woken up from her deep slumber. She then noticed the fact that she couldn't seem to recognize the different ceiling. "Wh-" She tried to speak but her throat was to dry so she ended up not finishing her sentence. She then shifted her field of view only to see a vast amount of people who were also laying down on white-sheeted beds filled with serious-looking injuries. One man had an arm bent in a position that wasn't normal, another had a foot gone missing. Finding that most of the people who had surrounded her received serious injuries she then looked at her own body. She saw that her body was wrapped in bandages yet she had a complete set of limbs and her own body showed little to no signs of being gravely injured. Nearby medical personnel soon saw that she woke up, a woman who was wearing a medic armband then walked towards her. "How are you feeling? Does your body hurt?" Hannah could only reply by nodding or shaking her head sideways. After a series of checks on the vital signs of Hannah, the nurse then told her, "It seems like you're already fine by now. If it's like this then maybe by tomorrow you'll be able to get discharged." The nurse then left Hannah who still felt tired. Her eyelids felt heavier by the second, and just before she was able to completely fall asleep she had managed to overhear two voices that were talking nearby. "How was she?" An unknown voice of a woman could be heard speaking towards the nurse. "There's nothing wrong with her body." The voice of the nurse who was just with her a moment ago replied. "Then it's good. How long will it take for her to be discharged?" The unknown voice of the woman seemed relieved by the answer of the nurse. "There's something weird. Her body had been healing at an abnormal rate. She's just a recruit, right? As far as I know, recruits shouldn't have received parasites yet." "There's no need for you to know about that" The nurse was rebuked by the unknown woman's voice. Eventually, those voices were gone and Hannah was dragged to dreamland. She had a very happy dream, in that dream, Cray didn't leave, her mother didn't die, and the monster invasion didn't happen. The reality, on the other hand, was really cruel. After the first wave of monsters had mostly been taken down by the elites, Lord Class monsters began to appear alongside another wave of monsters. The situation was slowly turning for the worse. Without any choice, the hidden experts who were tasked with protecting the continent all began to move. Inside the underground bunker that Hannah was currently sleeping at. Alect was contemplating when she was suddenly disturbed by a nudge from a man who was sitting right next to her. "Hey! Are you even listening?" The man had a pale complexion that suited his jet black hair. "Sorry about that, I was just thinking of some stuff." Alect apologized as she turned towards the others who were also with her inside a brightly lit room filled with flashing lights that went on and off from various screens. "Where were we again?" She asked to once again join the conversation. *sigh* "Please properly pay attention, okay? We're discussing who would take care of the Lord Class monsters that had appeared." A woman who was wearing red-colored frames explained to Alect as the screen in front of her showed ten different images of monsters. "There are only five of us that are capable of slaying the Lord Class monsters, which means that four of us would have to kill at least two." The man who was near Alect continued on the subject as he then pointed out two monsters and said, "These two, I'll take care of them." Alect who saw that nodded and asked, "Which one would I take care of?" "That's the problem. You see, we've received a report that says there are three of them who seem to be moving towards one location." The woman with glasses then showed a map with ten moving red dots. "These three are all moving towards the direction of where another Lord Class monster is rampaging." The woman then showed images of the Lord Class monsters that converged. The monsters were humongous as the images showed a Golden Lion, a jet-black Raven with red eyes, a Boar with huge tusks, and a white-colored Snake. Everyone in the room was quiet. They knew that taking care of Lord Class monsters was difficult, but taking down a group of them would be hard with their numbers. So they came to the agreement that three of them would head towards the monsters who were coming towards the Golden Lion, while the two others would head towards the farther ones to protect some of the strategic locations that the empire has on the Western Continent. After they had taken out one of the monsters, then they would immediately head towards a second Lord Class monster that would temporarily be handled by their subordinates who can distract these monsters. "Does anyone have any objections?" The woman wearing glasses asked. Seeing that no one raised any, she dismissed them quickly so that they could start their mission. Alect who was now walking on the corridor called out to a group of knights. They were her most trusted loyal subordinates. They were also among the strongest of the chivalric order that she leads. "I want you to handle this monster for me." She then pointed out at one of the Lord Class monsters on the map. "The Lord Class monster?" Everyone gasped. They knew that they may be on par with a Lord Class monster if they were to work together but no matter what they do, they wouldn't be able to beat it. "I, Henry shall do my best! Even if I have to offer my life I won't hesitate as long as it's for captain's sake!" A boy who wasn't shaken by Alect's words spoke out loudly. "Don't worry, It'll only be temporary. I'll go there as soon as I kill the Lord Class monster that I was assigned to kill." She then assured her subordinates. "Keep in mind that you're only doing this to minimize the damage that the Empire would incur from their rampage. So no matter what, don't die. Your death would only burden the empire." After saying that the rest of her subordinates were touched. They knew that their leader deeply cared for their lives. The rest of them began to feel ashamed by the fact that they thought that their captain wanted them to die a pointless death. Alect's subordinates all knew that they could one day be simply replaced by another when they die. But seeing their superior act this way meant that them being handpicked especially by her was not just a stunt that she makes to increase her popularity. It must truly be because she appreciates the people in front of her and that she sees potential in them. With that, her subordinates have this burning feeling in their hearts. They would wash away the shame that they felt by accomplishing the task that was given to them.
