I face Laurie once we’re outside. My cousin looks just like he always does, he's wearing baggy clothes and his hair is just as long and messy on his head as ever. He's still that goofy guy I grown up with. Except now I hate him.
"I didn't come here to kill her. That's not going to happen anymore, she's my friend, okay? She isn't a threat to anyone, especially not us," I explain, forcing myself to sound stern, "I'm just showing her around the clan. She wants to see everything in case she has to die.”
"Of course she does, genius. And you're just giving her more and more information so she can screw us even harder when she convinces you to let her go back to her human world, right?" he asks, looking at me like I'm stupid, “Have you paid no attention to important matters? You can never trust a human.”
"I don’t trust anyone except for her. She would never do anything against us," I assure, but Laurie just shakes his head like he doesn't believe me or like he doesn't care what I'm saying, "Listen, I'm not here for you and your bullshit. Whatever is going on, I don't care. And I'm not even staying here for long, I'm going back to Fallonmore."
"No, you’re not. Listen, you're acting frantic, let’s calm down.”
“I’m extra calm. Never been calmer.”
“Okay… well, if your human pet is being good, I'll let you keep her longer. She won’t be a big problem as long as you keep an eye on her at all times and I'm going to trust you to do that," he says and takes a big breath before trying to approach me, but I take a step back, "Are you still mad?”
“What do you think?”
“God,” he complains, throwing his head back, “Rio, when I told you to get a new phone I didn't mean to stop all communication. At least not with me. I've been so f*****g worried... have you been okay?"
"Of course I'm okay, you don’t have to worry about me," I growl. Im totally still mad, "Like I said, I'm not here to ruin your plan. I'll be gone soon and I’ll leave you alone with your secrets forever."
"Rio, dude," Laurie growls and raises his hands to his eyes to squash them. He looks like I’m really stressing him out, "I want to tell you everything, so bad. But I just can't yet."
"I'm not asking you to tell me anymore. I don't want you to tell me. I just want you to leave us alone and that's it.”
"But I don't want you to be mad at me, I want everything to be normal again," he whines like a little kid and tries to grab my arm, but once again I step back so he can’t touch me. I'm really not in the mood right now, "Rio, come on. Fine, you win, I'll tell you everything. We can deal with the consequences together."
"Laurent, I'm being so f*****g serious. I don't want to know," I blurt out, more serious than I've ever been before. I know Laurie notices because he pauses and looks confused. I'm not the serious or intense one of us, it's usually him or Alex. And I don't think I've ever called him Laurent before, "I'm leaving your clan, I don't want to be here anymore. You don't have to worry about anything to do with me. I'll take Lunanci to Fallonmore and tell Grandpa everything. He'll know what to do."
"No, no, don't do that," he blurts out suddenly, totally freaked out, "Everyone thinks you've been here, okay? At the academy with me, living with me. Grandpa thinks that too. If you go to Fallonmore and tell him the truth you'll ruin everything. Just stay here, with the human. I'll leave her alone. If you say you trust her then I will too."
He's lying about that last one. I raise an eyebrow at him.
"Okay, I'll try to trust her. But that doesn't mean I'll just let her walk out of here," he continues, being honest now, "I can't take that risk, not now that I have so many people to worry about. But I'll let you be with her longer, just help us. Help me. Stay here and move in with me."
"No."
"Pleeeaseee," he begs shamelessly, grabbing my arm suddenly and squeezing me to him, maybe a little too hard, "Please. Once you know what's going on, you'll understand. And I know why you're angry, but just trust me for a little while longer, maybe a month. Please, trust me. I love you. You're my brother."
"I love you too, obviously," I blurt out, rolling my eyes, "Fine... I'll keep your secret for a while longer, but I do have to go talk to Grandpa. About something different."
"What is it?"
"I won't tell you," I say, sounding pettier than I anticipated. Laurie scoffs, "Why would I tell you anything now?"
"Okay, don't tell me," he blurts out, "But you'll move in with me? To my apartment?"
"Of course not, Laurie. Luna goes where I go and I'm not going to leave her alone at the hotel or anywhere," I make it clear.
"She can live there too, I guess."
"Why the hell would you want me and my girl living with you and your mate? Don't you want privacy?" I ask. Laurie doesn't answer, he just gives me a strange, curious look.
"Your girl?" He repeats and then I realize my mistake, "Are you... involved with her? Like, in a relationship? I thought she was just your friend?"
"No, dude, we’re not involved," I try to laugh, embarrassed, "It's just that she's my best friend right now. She's my girl, like... like you're my boy, you know?"
"Aha..." he lets out, but I know he doesn't believe me, "Well, me and King can have privacy in our room, you and your girl can have the other one.”
"I'll ask Luna," I mumble, because I don't think she's comfortable with that and I'm not going to force her to stay in a place where she'll be scared all the time.
"Why the f**k are you calling her Luna? Who are you, Uncle Rodrick?" He snorts a laugh, raising a hand to tousle his hair. He’s the same old Laurie.
I hate that I want to forgive him.
"Her name is Lunanci, you i***t. I told you that," I spit, embarrassed again, "I just shortened it."
"Ah, I guess I blocked it out. I just think of her as the human," he mutters, shrugging, "Well, talk to her. I promise not to make her uncomfortable. I'll even be nice and polite."
"Well, you better," I warn, raising a finger to point at him menacingly, Laurie just looks at it, "And why the f**k are those alphas acting like they know me?"
"Because they do," he answers in a low voice with a grimace, confusing me some more, "I'll explain soon, I promise on my future pups. And then we'll all laugh together."
"Don't, I don't want to know," I repeat, rolling my eyes and calling the conversation over. I walk back into the restaurant and to the table where Lunanci is, looking terrified still, "Hey, he’s gone."
"What's wrong? Is he going to kill me already?" she asks, looking at me with her little eyes full of fear. I crawl into the couch next to her and hug her again.
"No, no, that's not going to happen," I promise, though... who knows, "At least not soon. He promised he’d give us more time.”
"Really?" She asks, relaxing a little and letting the air out, "Whew, that's good news. God, I was shitting myself."
"Yeah, don't worry about it yet, it's going to be fine," I promise and give her a kiss on the head. Lunanci nods and gives me a smile before crushing back against me. For the first time ever she’s asking me to be the one to make her feel better, so I try, but I have to tell her the other part first, "But there's something... uhm, Laurie wants us to go live with him. In his apartment, with Kingsley."
"What?" she asks, with an incredulous tone, "Why? So he can make me feel like a cockroach he wants to squash every day?"
"No, Luna, I won't let him do that. He promised on his future kids that he wouldn't hurt you and that he would be nice," I tell her, she moves to look at me incredulously, "Laurie is actually super chill and fun, you just got to see his psychotic side first, but usually he's not like that. And you'll like King, he's kind of mean but in a good way."
"King, huh?" she asks, turning away from me for a second before looking back with narrowed eyes, "The guy you were obsessed with?"
"What?" I ask, my face getting hot immediately under her eyes. God, I had forgotten about my little crush, "I wasn't obsessed, just slightly into him."
"Nah, you forget I've been inside you. Of your head. I even healed your broken heart , whatever happened with King hurt you," she blurts out with complete certainty in what she's saying and making me feel even worse, so I can't look at her anymore, I cover my face with my hands.
"God, Luna," I groan, "So embarrassing."
"It's the truth. So, you want me to be around that guy? What if you get re-obsessed with him?" She pushes, looking... annoyed? Why would it be such a big deal?
"Are you jealous by any chance?" I ask, a smile growing on my lips. Lunanci looks at me with narrowed eyes again, "You're jelly."
"No! I'm not! Why would I?" she spits, totally jealous and trying to hide it. s**t, that's cute, "Stop, stop looking at me like that. Do you really want that? To live with them?"
"Well, I don't think it's that bad. I'm still mad, but their apartment will be like a safe hotel for us. And Laurie will tell me everything I need to know, if my parents are here and stuff like that. And I would never get re-obsessed with King. He's Laurie's. I promise, I don't feel anything for him now, I haven't even thought about him in all this time."
"Hmm. Okay, then," she murmurs, thoughtfully, "I guess we should move in."
{ Lunanci }
Luarent has the most f*****g heavy energy I've ever felt. When he came to our table and sat there, I seriously thought I was going to pass out from the air pressure he was creating around us. And he's a huge man, a little taller than Rio and with bigger shoulders. Or maybe he just looked like a big bear because of the clothes he was wearing, but god, he's immense. And contradictorily, he has a beautiful sweet looking face.
And now I'll be living with him. It’s like I have a death wish or something.
Once we finish eating we go back to the hotel to get our stuff and then we drive to a building.
When we get to Laurie’s apartment and knock on the door, someone new opens. Someone being the most magical creature I have ever seen in this life and maybe in other lives as well. Kingsley.
Fuck my life, this guy is beautiful. Absolutely gorgeous. He also has a very heavy energy, but it doesn't feel as bad as Laurie's.
The boy looks at us and smiles at Rio before opening his thin arms for him. Rio immediately moves to hug him gently and my stomach twists in knots. I have to move my gaze for a second because I seriously don't like this.
"It's about time you showed your ugly face around here, Dumber" King jokes, but he sounds affectionate and is still hugging my… friend. Once he finally lets go, his attention moves to me.
King and I just stare at each other for a couple of seconds. I’m totally intimidated.
"This is my friend Lunanci. I’m guessing Laurie told you all about her?"
King is silent, just staring at me, making me incredibly nervous. I don't know what to do in his presence. I feel like I should bow to him.
He has soft white hair that frames his face perfectly, white eyelashes and eyebrows, the palest skin I've ever seen and purple eyes. He has delicate Asian features and a petite, feminine body. Now I understand Rio. Even I would be obsessed with this guy.
So this is an omega. Wow. I could never compete with one of those.
"Are all humans this pretty?" King asks suddenly, surprising me as he takes a step towards me to smell me, "And do they all smell like... nothing?"
"No, no way. Lunanci is special. Humans smell like garbage and are the ugliest motherfuckers I've ever seen, you should see the troll she has for an ex-boyfriend," Rio says with a mean laugh. King laughs too and finally comes over to give me a gentle hug.
He looks frail, but he feels very strong.
"It’s nice to meet you, Lunanci. Come on in," he says and Rio pushes our stuff inside, "Laurie's busy with his dad, they're making rounds. He'll be here in about an hour."
"Awesome," Rio rolls his eyes and throws himself onto the couch, then pats the spot next to him for me to sit, so I do. King sits across from us, "I'm still mad, so don't expect me to be Mr. Happy, okay? I'm ready to bring all the bad vibes to this place."
"Hey, I understand, I would be angry too. You have the right to bring bad vibes... but will they be worse than mine?" he asks with a wicked little grin that makes Rio chuckle. My hand tightens on his leg because I don't like this.
I don't know if King is being flirtatious or not, but I just don't like it.
