The Cat Is Out

"God, shut up. I'm not going to kill you yet," Laurent says and rolls his eyes as if my fear is annoying to him, but that still manages to calm me down a bit, "I'm going to do something else first… I'm going to tell you the secret Rio wants to know so badly.” I lower my hands from my face slowly and just blink in confusion. Laurie is suddenly smiling like this is something evil and I’m sure it is, knowing him. Because why would he tell me before telling Rio? "Alex is here, in Tallahide," he starts and my mouth drops open, "He never really lived in the human world, he's been here terrorizing me and pretending to be Rio, taking inhibitors so no one can smell he's an omega. He's been forcing me to keep his secret or else he'll f**k off to another clan to do the same thing over there. So, now you know. Go run and tell Rio. If you are such a good friend, don't keep this secret. Tell him his twin is here and let him ruin everything for Alex. And then, if Alex leaves and puts himself in danger in another clan, you can be the person responsible for that, not me." I stay quiet, just watching him blurt all that out. Immediately his energy feels a little better, as if letting it out has made him feel relieved. "Why are you so sure Rio will ruin everything? You think that little of him?" "I think that highly of him, don't forget I know him a million times better than you," he spits in an aggressive growl, making me recoil again, "He would never let his omega brother hang around horny, immature alphas all f*****g day, I know he'll do something to stop it. I would too, but Alex is putting me between a rock and a hard place. My options are, either to let him do his thing here where I can watch him... or let him go to f**k knows where." I think I understand now, I get why he hasn’t said anything. I close my eyes with the stress he just caused me. "Why did you tell me?" I groan, hating him even more. This is sensitive information, I don't want the responsibility of getting my hands on it. "Because I'm not a shitty cousin or best friend, I'm not hiding that from Rio just because I want to. I'm doing it because Alex is threatening me like a f*****g terrorist!" He groans and crosses his arms across his chest, pouting like a child. "So, where is he? Alex?" I ask, getting a little excited. I've always wanted to meet him and I think there's a chance now... a small chance, because I totally don't think it's smart to tell Rio. "Ugh, don't remind me," he complains, growling again, "He's living with an alpha, a trustworthy one, but still. Alex wanted the whole experience of living on his own with a roomie or whatever. So... now you know. You can betray Alex if you want, because I won't.” "You're betraying him anyway by telling me this secret," I mutter, grimacing. "I'm not," he replies, "I've thought it all out, I'll say you're a human witch and you read my mind against my will.” "Oh, so now you believe I'm a witch," I roll my eyes. He’s as insufferable as Rio at his worst, "And I'm not, by the way. Rio says I'm a healer, like the ones that exist here." "Oh, does he?" he asks in an extremely childish and mocking tone, "What does he know? He barely paid attention in school and we’ve never met any healers. He’s just dumb and naive and you’re a con artist.” "Shut up. You don't know anything about us." "Us?" He repeats, with narrowed eyes, "There is no 'us', you witch. Rio would never be with a human. He only likes omegas and that's never going to change, it's impossible. He likes King, did you know that? And you don't look nearly as good as King, not in your best dreams." Stupid rude werewolf, I seriously dislike him. But just before I can risk my life and tell him to go to hell and that Kingsley deserves someone who isn't as evil as him, the door opens again and Rio walks in looking down at his phone nonchalantly, but as soon as he looks up, he sees us: me still on the couch and Laurent standing in front of me. Rio immediately scowls and starts walking towards us with heavy steps. I can see his clear eyes dilating. Oh, no. "What the f**k are you doing to her?!" he growls and crashes into Laurent with an impressive force that makes me gasp, especially when he slams Laurent into a wall so hard that I feel a vibration on the floor. Laurent just looks at him with wide eyes, Rio puts an arm agains his throat, “If you even think about hurting her you’re dead, do you hear me?” "Rio… I mean, Alpha, what...?" Laurie lets out with a muffled voice because of Rio’s arm, he looks completely disoriented, "We were just talking, I wasn't going to hurt her." "But you were threatening her, I bet. Cousin or not, Alpha of Tallahide or not, I won't allow you to show any disrespect to my mate," he growls and I close my eyes. This is bad, isn't it? Laurent shouldn't know about the mate thing, "You're not going to touch a single hair on her head. Not today and not ever, or you and I are going to settle that with a challenge, is that clear?" Laurent can't speak, he doesn't even do anything to break free from Alpha's tight grip or fight back, he's just in complete shock. Before this escalates any further and ends in a fight no one wants, I get up from the couch and walk over to them. "Hey, Alpha? Nothing bad was happening, in fact, I think we were just becoming friends," I lie, making Alpha relax a little and turn to look at me, so I take advantage and grab his arm to pull him back and make him let go of Laurie. I mean, he lets me pull him back, "I'm fine, see? Nothing happened." "Really?" he asks, grabbing my face in his hands and looking deep into my eyes. I can see Laurent still pressed against the wall, unable to move or do anything, "He didn’t hurt you?" "Not at all, he was apologizing for being so rude and mean," I lie again, Alpha squints his eyes as if he doesn't believe me, but he doesn't get aggressive again. I want to fully calm him down, so I rise up on my toes to give him a kiss that was meant to be quick and sweet, but he takes advantage and makes it deeper. He sucks on my lower lip before letting me go. "Okay then, love. I'm going to pretend I believe that. For everyone's sake," he mutters once our kiss is over and gives Laurie one last look before stepping away from me. Before anyone can say anything else, Rio's eyes return to normal and he staggers to the side, looking confused, "Oh? What the hell am I doing here?" He looks at the door as if considering how that happened. "Alpha came out to greet his cousin," I mutter, letting the details out. "Huh, that was abrupt,” he mumbles, looking at Laurie, "My wolf keeps completely blocking me out. Nothing weird happened while he was out, right?" Laurie is still transfixed, staring at us open-mouthed. "Nope, nothing weird happened, relax," I reply easily, "Laurie and I were just settling our differences, can you give us a second to finish the conversation?" "Really?" He asks with narrowed eyes, "Should I? You're really being nice to my friend, Laurent?" Again, Laurie says nothing. God, he’s so obvious. "Yeah, he's being really nice. I'll be in the room in a second, wait for me there," I order, nudging him until he agrees to move. He nods and walks until he enters our room, closing the door behind him. Well, I guess the cat is out of the bag now. "So... now we both have secrets, huh?" I start, raising a hand to scratch my head, still unsure if this is bad or not, "You want to tell Rio about that? His wolf says I'm his mate, but Rio still has no idea.” "There's no way," he spits once he finally reacts. His eyes are very wide and unfocused. "But there is," I reply, starting to smile because I find his shock completely hilarious. He needed someone to humble him a bit. "Nu-uh," he insists. "Yu-uh," I continue with a childish tone and a new set of balls. Now I’m even less scared of him because I know my Alpha has my back, even with this overgrown brat. "But you're a f*****g human," he blurts out, stepping away from the wall to approach me. He looks closely at my exposed neck, probably looking for a mark that obviously isn't there, "You’re not his mate, that’s not possible." I think the same thing, but I'm obviously not going to tell him that. "I'm a healer, there's magic in me," I answer with a proud smile. That's true, or at least I think so, "Now, do you believe me?" "Oh, I believe you. I believe you're an even more powerful scammer than I thought, you managed to fool his wolf too," he blurts out, frowning and suddenly getting tense again, "But you don't have a mark and Rio doesn't think you're his 'mate', right? His wolf is hiding that from him. I could kill you right now and he'd never know. He'd just be upset that I killed his dear friend, but he's going to get over it eventually and he'd never let his wolf challenge me." "Do it, then, if you're so sure about that," I challenge him with a smile on my face. I take a couple of steps until I'm in front of him, "Do it, Laurent. This is your golden opportunity. Break my neck and take me out, let your cousin hate you forever. Even if he doesn't kill you, Alpha will never forgive you." "f**k!" he shouts, taking a couple of steps back and bringing both hands to his head to make a mess of his hair with absolute stress. He knows as well as I do, he won't. He can’t, "f*****g f**k!” Laurent turns away from me and goes to lock himself in his room without looking at me again. Oh, my god. Does this mean I don't have to die after all?
