THE MAKING OF A LEGEND: Cristiano Chapter 3: The Boy Who Refused to Lose The afternoon sun hung low over the hills of Madeira as children gathered on a dusty football pitch. The goals were nothing more than two piles of stones placed a few feet apart, and the white lines that marked the field had long disappeared. It wasn't a professional stadium, but to the boys who played there every day, it was their own little world. Cristiano Ronaldo tightened the laces on his worn-out boots and placed the ball at his feet. "Come on, Cristiano!" one of his friends shouted. "Let's see what you've got today." Cristiano smiled, but his eyes never left the ball. For him, every match mattered. It didn't matter if there were five spectators or fifty thousand. Winning was always the objective. The game began, and within seconds, Cristiano was everywhere. He chased every loose ball, sprinted after every pass, and never stopped moving. His determination frustrated the older boys, who were bigger and stronger. "Slow him down!" one of them yelled. A defender charged toward him, hoping to knock him off the ball. Cristiano quickly shifted the ball to his other foot, slipped past the challenge, and continued his run. The crowd of neighborhood children erupted in cheers. "Go on!" "Shoot!" Cristiano struck the ball with all his strength. It crashed into the back of the makeshift net. "Goal!" His teammates celebrated, but Cristiano simply picked up the ball and carried it back to the center. "There are more goals to score," he said. That was who he was. Scoring once was never enough. --- At home, football was all he talked about. His mother often laughed as she watched him dribble around chairs, tables, and anything else that stood in his way. "One day," she joked, "there won't be any furniture left." Cristiano laughed, but he never stopped practicing. Every object became an imaginary defender. Every hallway became a football pitch. Sometimes he practiced until darkness filled the room. His mother would finally call out, "Cristiano! Dinner!" "Just five more minutes!" Those five minutes often became twenty. --- His father noticed the same determination. Working at Andorinha Football Club gave José the chance to watch many young players, but his son stood out for one reason. Cristiano never accepted average. If training ended at six o'clock, he wanted to stay until sunset. If a coach corrected him, he didn't become upset. He listened. He learned. Then he tried again. One evening, after another training session, José placed a hand on his son's shoulder. "You know," he said, "talent can take you far." Cristiano looked up. "But?" "But hard work decides how far you go." Cristiano nodded quietly. "I'll work harder than everyone." José smiled. He believed his son loved football. He still couldn't imagine just how far that love would take him. --- Cristiano's performances at Andorinha continued to improve. Week after week, he scored goals, created chances, and impressed everyone who watched him play. Soon, people around Madeira began talking about the young boy with incredible speed and endless determination. Coaches from other local clubs started paying attention. One name appeared more often than the others. Nacional. One of Madeira's biggest football clubs was beginning to notice Cristiano Ronaldo. For most children, that opportunity would have been a dream. For Cristiano... It was only the next step. He knew the journey to becoming the best had only just begun. But moving to a bigger club also meant facing stronger players, tougher competition, and greater expectations. For the first time in his young life, Cristiano realized something important. The higher you climb... The harder every battle becomes. As the sun set over Madeira, he stood alone on the pitch with a football resting beneath his boot. He looked toward the horizon. Beyond the ocean lay Portugal. Beyond Portugal lay Europe. And somewhere beyond all of that... The biggest football stages in the world. Cristiano took one final shot before walking home. The ball soared into the net. He smiled. One dream had already begun. Many more were waiting. End of Chapter 3
