The walk back to the locker room was a blur of screaming fans and flashing lights, but I barely felt them. I was anchored by the weight of Roman’s hand in mine, his thumb tracing slow, rhythmic circles against my skin. He didn't let go, not even when we reached the tunnel and the press attempted to swarm us. He simply used his shoulder to carve a path through the crowd, his eyes fixed forward, his expression one of cold, untouchable victory. Once the heavy steel doors of the facility slammed shut behind us, cutting off the roar of the stadium, the silence felt heavy and electric. Roman stopped abruptly in the middle of the hallway, pulling me around to face him. He was still in his gear, smelling of salt and intensity, his chest still heaving from the game. He looked at me for a long time, his gaze searching, as if he were trying to reconcile the girl he’d known since childhood with the woman who had just publicly incinerated her relationship with her brother. "You're a lunatic," he whispered, though his voice was devoid of judgment. It sounded like a confession. "Is that a problem?" I asked, a small, daring smile playing on my lips. "It's a massive problem," he murmured, his hand sliding up to grip the nape of my neck, pulling me closer. "Because now I can't just treat you like a temporary distraction. You didn't just step into my world, Allie. You set it on fire." He kissed me then, and it was different from the ones before. It wasn't about hunger or conquest; it was an acknowledgment. It was the kiss of two people who had just crossed a point of no return together. The drive home was quieter, the adrenaline finally beginning to ebb, replaced by a shimmering, nervous energy. As the matte-black Lamborghini pulled into his driveway, I looked at my phone. It was a graveyard of missed calls and hateful texts from Nolan, and a flood of notifications from people I hadn't spoken to in years. My life had become a headline. Roman killed the engine, but he didn't get out. He turned to me, his expression serious. "Tomorrow, the world is going to try to tear you apart," he warned. "They’ll call you a gold-digger, a home-wrecker, a spoiled brat. They’ll dig into your past, your family, every mistake you've ever made. And Nolan... Nolan isn't going to just let this go. He'll try to find a way to pull you back, or he'll try to make me the villain in a way that actually sticks." I looked at him, and for the first time, I didn't feel the need to be protected. "Let them. I've spent my whole life being the version of Allie that everyone else wanted. If the price of being myself is a few bad headlines, I'll pay it." Roman’s eyes darkened, a look of genuine admiration crossing his face. He reached over, his fingers brushing a stray lock of hair from my forehead. "I think," he said, his voice dropping to a low, dangerous hum, "that I’ve officially met my match." He didn't lead me into the house. He pinned me against the leather seat of the car, his body pressing me down, his mouth finding mine with a renewed, frantic urgency. The luxury of the car, the silence of the night, and the looming chaos of the morning all merged into one singular, intoxicating moment. As we finally made our way inside, the house felt different. It was no longer a sanctuary or a hiding place; it was our headquarters. As I stepped into the foyer, I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror—barefoot, dress rumpled, eyes bright with a fire I hadn't known I possessed. I didn't recognize the woman staring back at me, and that was the most exhilarating part. Roman stepped up behind me, his arms wrapping around my waist, his chin resting on my shoulder. We looked at our reflection together—the superstar and the rebel. "So," he whispered against my ear. "What's the plan for tomorrow, Allie? Do we play the game, or do we change the rules?" I leaned back into him, a thrill of pure adventure racing through my veins. "I think it's time we burned the rulebook entirely."
