It made no difference whether or not the Irish lass" guardian was watching outside. We were inside 13 Miller"s Court, the door closed and latched. A man"s heavy coat, hung over the window in place of a curtain, prevented anybody seeing in. I doubted, too, whether any light from inside could escape. I nearly laughed at the thought as I eyed the girl. I knew for certain she would not escape. But I"m hurrying the story again. Even as I think of it now, the thrill returns. I found myself in a frightening paradise. I stood with a woman alone in her private room; outside of my auntie, I"d never been in that situation before. Never, since I"d taken on that sacred job, had I had solitude, warmth, and a seemingly endless amount of time in which to work. It was almost too much to look forward to.
