The nerve-wracking hour pacing outside the ER, the relief when the surgeon reappeared, his scrubs blood-stained, with the news that their child would live. The warmth of Leah’s body, her tears on his neck as they hugged each other. It would be the last time. The incident would unnerve her enough to insist on a separation. Nothing Goldsmith could say would convince her otherwise.
