Lyra’s POV
I don’t know what is going on with me, but I can see it mirrored in the faces of the people staring back at me. I try to stop it, to keep the heat from coming out of my lungs and forcing its way through my mouth.
But it is insistent and harsh. When I yell at Bram, I feel it in my core, how the words create a hedge around me and dashes out in such force that it hits the person it targets.
I glare at him as he wobbles on his feet, my anger barely dissipated. I warned him. At least, I did.
When I turn around, I meet Killian staring at me with a surprised expression. His eyes are wide open and he has taken a step closer, along with Dorian and Riven.
“Step away from him, Lyra,” Killian growls. “Now.”
His Alpha dominance bounces off in waves around me, and I feel it threatening to pull me under, but I remain standing, blocking the rogue from view. I have no idea why I am doing this too, why the odd combination of honey and the earth wafting off this stranger has made me do something I usually would not do.
I heard it as clear as day in my head the minute he looked at me. He is my mate. I know. It makes no sense, because Killian is my mate as well. But I know what I heard.
Riven shakes his head suddenly. “Killian, her eyes…your hand….”
My eyes look down at Killian’s palm. Engraved in the centre is a mark, indecipherable from where I stand. But I can see the faint glow, gaining brilliance every minute. I look towards one of the windows in the room.
And this is when I see my eyes. The force of bright silver shining from it, the same shade of silver nestled in Killian’s palm.
“What is this?” I whisper, the questions growing every minute. First, my shifting under the torn moon, then the wolfsbanelodged in my shoulder and now, my eyes.
“Lyra,” Killian calls softly. He does it for me, not anyone else in the room. “Come here.”
But I can’t move an inch, not with the glow in my eyes transferring to the center of my palm, just like Killian. It is silver-blue, brighter and impossible to hide. A wide gasp spreads across the room. I hear the shuffling of their feet as they get off their seats, some of them trying to get a good look at what is happening.
And the others putting as much distance as they can between me and them,
“What are you doing?” Dorian snaps, coming closer. “Stop, Lyra.”
“I don’t know!” I yell back, shaking my head. Exhaustion licks my bones, yet the glow doesn’t get dim. “What do I do? How can I get it to stop doing this?”
Everyone looks at Riven and his head jerks back in surprise for the first few seconds. Recovering quickly, he says in a clam tone. “I think you have to let it move, Lyra. Don’t force it.”
“You think?”
“No wolf should be able to do what you can do,” he says, voicing out my suspicions. That note comes back to my mind. Nightborn.
What am I?
The light seems to answer to his voice. It tightens in my palm and then it moves suddenly, hitting Rook’s chains. The iron groans under its powers and the burst in tiny pieces, freeing him.
Silence.
Rook stares at his free hands, the smile he walked into this room with coming back. He is wild, untamed, all the wrong things. Yet, my heart flutters each time he looks at me. Every warrior in the room move at once, heading towards him.
But Killian cannot stop looking at me, and I do not blame him because if I was in his shoes, I probably would be freaking out right now.
I was wrong when I thought the warriors were heading for Rook. They seem to be coming for me. Dorian springs into action at once, planting himself in front of me. A blade comes out of nowhere and I can tell he won’t hesitate to use it.
For me.
Riven takes the spot behind me, swirling heat in his hands. Even Rook joins the little party against the rest of the pack, daring them with the look in his eyes.
“Enough! Bram explodes. “They are both evil. Seize them! We need to get the Court here right now.”
“Horns!” Someone shouts from the corridor. The word hits the room like a huge stone and suddenly, everyone becomes distraught. I look around, trying to understand what else is going on. Someone runs in.
“There are Ashburn scouts at the line,” he pants, his face red from all the running. “Three. Maybe four.”
I look at Rook and he shrugs at me with that same smug look on his face. He led them here.
Killian springs into action at once, pulling his gaze from me. “You,” he motions one of his soldiers over. “Take the east yard and lock it. It must remain impenetrable. Dorian…”
“Here,” he answers, not moving away from my side.
“Riven?”
“With Lyra,” he answers calmly but assuredly.
“I can take care of myself,” I whisper just as Bram orders that Rook be killed while I be chained. “We don’t; let chaos rule out pack while Ashburn watches us. We need to kill the fire on our own roof first.
“Try it,” Rook challenges.
I move, trying to put myself in front of him again, but suddenly, Killian’s hands gathers around my wrist. Every bit of me halts instantly. I feel the tingle snake up my arm where we touch. I look up into his eyes, my breath suddenly coming out as pants. The mate bond throbs between us and I feel a sharp ache in my chest.
“Trust me,” he murmurs, bringing me to himself.
“I don’t know you,” I answer truthfully.
“You don’t know any of us.”
A window explodes suddenly, and bolts start flying in.
“Positions,” Killian yells, his feet fast on the ground as he gains momentum. My eyes scan for the nearest exist. “Shields up. Get her…”
The third bolt whooshes into the room and right before my eyes, it aims for my heart.
