It was clear that Llyrian was upset. Although he did an excellent job at hiding the pain from his face, the feelings that radiated off of him in strong waves were more than enough for anyone to tell that he was devastated. In fact, his aura was so strong that Jasper almost felt suffocated by his emotion and instantly regretted his words.  However, he did not get a chance to say anything because Llyrian spoke up.  "Considering you have grown up with werewolves your whole life, I am going to assume that you know the significance of a mate."  Jasper did not respond and he didn't have to because Llyrian's assumption was correct.
