Chapter 6

1723 Words
This will be Nicholas POV since he meet Aurora Ryeanne. I'm hurt that seeing her afraid of me. Why is she so scared? It's not like I would ever do anything to scare her… or at least I don't think I would. I've always been respectful and polite with women in my life, even if they aren't interested back, which I'm glad. The last thing I want is for the women to find out who I really am. I never said what I thought of women, it was just an expression to show respect but the way I act with them I don't believe either of us are attracted to each other in any way. She doesn't know about my reputation but as far as I know she never told anyone. I think there must be something wrong because if she had, I'd have gotten rid of it a long time ago. As soon as I got home, I walked over to my bedroom and locked myself in. As usual, I took off my shoes and started undressing. I looked up at my ceiling for awhile and began running my hand across my chest as I stared into space, thinking about everything. What would happen if we actually got together? Would people treat me differently? Would they treat her better? Is it worth it? Maybe… Just as I was feeling confident, someone knocked on my door. "Come in." The door creaked open and my roommate, Lancer, peeked his head inside. "Hey, Nicholas! How are you?" "I am fine, I'll tell you later, now could you please leave me alone for the rest of tonight? I'm still recovering from being attacked by the monster." He stepped in and closed the door. "Ok, but I'm going to check in again tomorrow night before heading home." He then turned around and left before closing the door once again. After getting dressed, I went downstairs, made myself a cup of coffee, grabbed a chocolate chip cookie from the bowl next to the microwave, and sat down in one of the living room chairs, facing away from the fireplace. After finishing all four cookies in three bites, I put my empty mug into the dishwasher in the kitchen, stood up and stretched. After putting the cookie plate into the cabinet above the sink, I walked over to my bed. Once in bed, I laid down and shut my eyes, drifting off quickly. *** When Nicholas opened his eyes he noticed someone standing over him. Looking up he saw that it was Richard. He tried pushing the intruder away but it was like they wouldn't budge. Then he noticed another person standing there as well. Looking back at the first one he noticed their face. It was a woman, very pretty with brown hair, wearing a black dress. "Why are you here?" "Nicholas!" shouted the woman. "Don't talk to these men! You need help, you're ill!" "Oh, yes I am, am I?" Nicholas retorted "You didn't answer my question earlier." "Yes, you are ill, and it's your own fault. If you hadn't been chasing after me in the woods, none of this would have happened." The woman glared at him, causing him to feel uneasy. However, he ignored her glare and decided to ignore her too. Instead, he turned his attention back to Lance. "Well, I'm sorry but I don't understand why you'd attack me like that. I wasn't following you. I don't know who you are or where you came from and you certainly shouldn't have attacked me. Now if you'll excuse me, it appears you're wasting my time." Nicholas continued to walk backwards towards the door. "I will see you tomorrow morning and we can discuss what's going on. Goodbye." With those words, Nicholas slammed the door behind him. Now that he was alone, he decided to look up the name of the doctor that helped him when he was ill. When he found his page he searched it for the name of the doctor's office. He found it and clicked on it. While waiting for the call to connect, he sat down on his bed and pulled out his phone from underneath his pillow. When the connection was made, he called the doctor's office asking if he could make an appointment. They were hesitant, telling him that the doctor was on maternity leave and he couldn't get appointments until he returned from his vacation. He hung up and sighed. That would take at least three weeks to return and he still needed his medication... *** A few days had passed since Nicholas woke up, still in the same position, staring out of his window at the view from his house. As he continued to stare through the window his mind drifted off. He wondered what would happen if he did go into hospital and was admitted. Would they be mean to him? Probably not, but would they keep asking him questions? Or would they only ask him if he had an eating disorder or schizophrenia? His thoughts were interrupted when he heard his doorbell ring. "Coming," he answered as he slowly got out of bed and went to his front door. Upon opening it he saw a tall woman carrying a big box that seemed to contain medical supplies. She introduced herself as Catherine. "Are you ready to go?" Nicholas nodded and led her to the car. Once inside he buckled his seatbelt and gave the woman directions. "Where exactly am I taking you?" he asked while starting the car. "To the city hospital." "Why?" She paused before answering, obviously considering her words carefully before responding. "Because you have cancer." His eyes widened upon hearing that, immediately regretting having asked that question. "No I don't." He hoped he said that without faltering or giving away how scared he felt. However, Catherine simply laughed and said, "Of course you do, your symptoms fit it quite well. And besides, your blood tests show that you have two types of cancer, breast and prostate cancer." "So I'm dying then?" "That depends on whether the cancer responds to chemotherapy. The doctors might suggest radiation or surgery to remove the cancer cells before you begin chemo but that isn't guaranteed. Also, there's also a chance that the cancer cells will regenerate and eventually kill you." Nicholas was silent as Catherine talked, completely frozen in place. He could hear her voice and what she was saying but he didn't really care anymore. All that mattered was finding someone else who could help him. Unfortunately for Nicholas, Catherine was the only one willing to do so. They arrived at the city hospital shortly after and Catherine showed Nicholas how to use his wheelchair. Nicholas pushed himself onto the elevator, pressing the button for the fourth floor, which was his floor. Once on his floor, Nicholas wheeled himself into the hallway leading towards the nurse's station, stopping right outside the door. "Do I have to stay here? Can't I just walk around?" he asked nervously as Catherine unlocked the door to his room. Catherine smiled sympathetically. "You may be able to walk around but it won't feel good and you still need to take your pills and eat something every three hours. I hope this works out for the best." "Yeah… I guess so…" “So, where's your girlfriend?” “Why do you ask?” He retorted back. With that, Catherine backed out the door and Nicholas let out a huge sigh of relief. Once the door closed Nicholas leaned back against the wall, trying to calm his breathing and think of some way to get out of there. He wanted to leave, he really did. However, he knew that once he left he couldn't go back inside his apartment or even step foot outside without being stopped or questioned by someone. Not knowing what else to do, Nicholas picked up his cane and hobbled slowly out of his room, making sure to stay close to the wall to avoid bumping into anyone. Once outside he headed straight to the stairwell. There he sat on the bottom step waiting for the elevator to arrive. Luckily it arrived and Nicholas was able to sit comfortably in the elevator. He had been sitting there for several minutes when the doors opened. Standing up, he headed over to where he assumed was his floor, and entered his apartment. Walking down the hallway, he entered his bedroom and grabbed his cane and the bag containing the meds he used before leaving. "Wait…" Nicholas froze in place. Why does it sound so familiar? "Did someone say my name?" "No, no… Just forget about it. Go ahead and take your meds, and don't worry, you won't even remember it." As he placed the bag under his bed, something caught Nicholas's eye. He reached under the bed and found a piece of paper, crumpled up and stained with ink. Opening it he realized that it was a letter. It read, "Dear Nicholas, I hope you wake up soon. We haven't heard anything from you. I've checked every possible hospital in New York City and there is nothing that seems to fit the bill. Please come home as soon as you can so we can take care of you. Love, your parents." As Nicholas read over the letter several tears began falling down his face. He dropped the piece of paper on the ground and started crying again. "My mom and dad… They probably forgot me," Nicholas said with a sniffle "But… who cares? No one knows I'm here anyway…" Suddenly a thought popped into his head. "Or maybe they knew and they're trying to tell me that I don't exist..." Suddenly he felt dizzy and nauseated. The last thing he remembered before passing out on his bed was a strange man's voice echoing loudly in his mind. "You have cancer, Nicholas. I hate to have to tell you this because I want you to live forever, but I think I'm the only one who can help you. Your mother has already passed and your father doesn't know what to do. So you better hurry up and come back to us." Before he faded away he heard two more voices: one male, one female; and they sounded very angry and upset.
