Chapter 7

1450 Words
The next day, after spending most of the morning lying in bed watching TV, Nicholas finally decided it was time for his medication. He grabbed his cane and made his way over to the bathroom and filled up a glass with water. After filling the glass up he drank from it and made his way back to his room. After grabbing his bottle of medicine from the nightstand, Nicholas walked over to his closet and dug into the top shelf. Pulling out a small plastic container filled with white powder, he poured one tablespoon of the powder into each of his mouth and swallowed them dry. Taking his empty cup and placing it beside his pillow, Nicholas climbed into bed and rested, hoping that his medicine would work fast enough that he wouldn't get sick. It felt like a few minutes later than what it actually was when Nick heard his cellphone ringing. Sitting upright in bed, he grabbed it and looked at the screen, seeing it was a missed call and unread message. It was from his mother. He hesitated before picking up his phone and pressed the green button. "Mom?" he whispered into the phone. "Nicholas?! Sweetie! Where are you honey? I tried calling you and texting you, but you never answered. I've been looking all over for you! We have to talk!" At his mothers' words, Nicholas became panicked. What could possibly happen to him now? "I don't... know where I am right now, Mom." He was met with silence on the other end of the line. Eventually she spoke again with her voice shaking. "Oh sweetie, I'm coming home. Are you okay? Is anyone bothering you?!" "No!" he exclaimed before realizing how loud he was. Clearing his throat, he spoke again quieter. "No one bothers me. I'm fine, I promise." I miss my Fiance "Okay then. Stay safe. You know what you always say." She paused. "You should sleep Nicky. It' s almost noon and your medicines will wear off soon. Call me tomorrow morning before school okay?" "Okay mom," he answered quietly. He was tired so he quickly said goodbye and ended the call. He laid his head back down on his pillow and stared blankly at the ceiling. Soon enough he started drifting into the land of dreams. The first thing Nicholas noticed when he woke up the next morning was the sun streaming through the blinds. It was so bright that he couldn't see a thing through the curtain, but he wasn't too bothered. He had spent the night tossing and turning, unable to fall asleep no matter how hard he tried, due to his nerves. As much as he wanted to believe that everything would be alright after talking to Catherine, he knew deep down that it would not. His whole life was on the line. If he couldn't find a cure before the cancer grew bigger he would definitely lose his sight. It was already showing signs, though he had yet to look at himself. In fact, the only person who knew that he was sick was his mother. It scared him to know she knew but at the same time he trusted her and had no doubt that she would do whatever she could to help him. Although Nicholas knew she hated it when he came home with broken bones or bruises, she was happy that he still lived. Maybe if he told her where he was she could somehow convince the local doctors or emergency room to give him some type of treatment. Or maybe… just maybe… she could find someone else to come visit him and help him escape. But he didn't know which option would work the best. After a long bout of internal debate, Nicholas decided it would be best to wait until later to confront his mom. He couldn't deal with it right now. He needed to focus on getting well, getting away, and getting better. He had to start acting normal and pretending that everything was all right because otherwise he risked becoming a public target. Once he finished breakfast, Nicholas went downstairs to his office. The last thing he wanted to do was sit in his chair and do nothing while he waited for his medication to kick in. As he sat down, he immediately pulled out a new piece of writing paper. Using the pad, he wrote a short note telling his mother about what had happened to his eyesight and his mental state, explaining why he couldn't drive any longer and begging for her to try and find another doctor for him to visit. He signed the note simply, Nicholas. After reading over his note, he folded it up and put it on the desk. Next, he pulled out the envelope he brought with him from his condo. Pushing aside the letter and the packet, he pulled out the photo and carefully unfolded it. The photo revealed itself to be a picture of Nicholas, Sarah, Andrew, Jack and his grandparents, along with their families. It showed the entire family together. Nicholas was standing next to his Grandma and Uncle Michael with a large grin on his face while Aunt Margaret was holding onto both of his hands and giving him an awkward hug, Jack was sitting on the ground staring up at him and Sarah was laughing while hugging his legs. His grandpa, Grandma, Andrew, Jack and Aunt Margaret were standing right in front of them all with smiles on their faces. For a minute, Nicholas was reminded of how lucky he was to have a wonderful family who loved him. After a moment's hesitation, he slipped the photo into his pocket. A few moments later the medication kicked in and soon Nicholas fell asleep. *** The next day, as predicted Nicholas received calls from his mother and grandmother several times before noon. When it was finally his turn to answer, his mother wasted no time getting into his personal business. "Nicholas, I swear I'm coming home right now, you hear me?" "Yeah I hear you," Nicholas said softly "I promise I'll try my hardest to behave until you get here, okay mom?" "That would be great. Now let me speak to your grandmother." Hearing her speak to his grandmother made Nicholas's stomach growl. "Mom, please I really want to eat something. Could I please have something to eat? I'm starving!" "Yes, yes, go ahead dear." "Thank you." He heard the sound of rustling before his grandma said, "Nicholas is everything alright?" Her voice was soft, full of concern. "Everything is fine, Grandma, I promise," he replied. "I've got lots of plans and I need to make sure I get to keep all of those things." He chuckled and his grandma responded with a laugh of her own. Nicholas smiled. He hoped she believed that. "Grandma, can you ask Sarah to bring me some lunch? And I need you to get me a glass of milk and some crackers too. I feel like a prisoner without any food and water," he said with a chuckle. "All right, I'll get to it right away," she promised. "And Nicholas… please don't push yourself. If you need anything I'll be able to reach you, okay?" "Yes, thank you, grandma." When he hung up he looked over at Sarah. "Hey Sarah!" He greeted her with a huge smile. "How are you doing today?" Sarah giggled and said, "I'm doing pretty good today. How about you?" "I feel awesome, thanks. So you're going to be staying the whole day?" "Yep, that's what I agreed to." Just then there was a knock at the door and a second later Sarah's mother poked her head inside. "Sarah sweetheart, would you mind helping your brother get ready for school?" she asked kindly. "Sure! No problem Mrs. Williams!" Sarah called as she stood up. "Let me get my stuff and I'll meet you downstairs!" she called back to Nicholas before rushing upstairs to grab her backpack and pencil case. While he waited for his sister to return downstairs, Nicholas looked around his room for a change of clothes. Once he had found some of his pajamas and shoes, he dressed up and grabbed his bag. While walking down the stairs he ran into Sarah and gave her a big hug, surprising her a bit. "Hey Nicholas," she said happily once he released her. "Good morning." He smiled brightly back at her. "Is your sister coming down?" "Yep, but you probably won't see her before we leave. I think she said she'd meet us somewhere around here and then walk with us. Come on, let's go and get some breakfast first."
