Chapter 3

1190 Words
The next day I slept late. Again. And the third. And the fourth. The fifth morning after I had fallen ill started out normally. My mom made me breakfast, dressed me nicely, kissed my forehead, and left without another word. A part of me almost wished that she would stay behind and help me out; after all, I really needed someone there to keep an eye on me. But my father always reminded me of her, saying that it was our responsibility to take care of each other. Besides, my family had never particularly cared for me very much before. What was the big deal? They were my parents, for God's sake! Today my Mom wants to introduce her bestfriends son mas matanda siya sa akin ng isang taon. It's their second anniversary kaya sa wakas nagkasama sila ulit and they want to do something special since I'm such a good kid, and all. Maybe that'd give me something worth looking forward to on Christmas, if not birthdays and holidays, at least on my birthdays. But I knew that even that was too much to ask for. In fact, I don't think I'd ever truly get it; Dad loved her and he adored me; there was no changing that. The question was whether I would ever get a love like theirs. One that lasted, I mean. If Dad ever stopped loving me or she stopped loving him, things would only get worse and worse. And I'd be completely and utterly miserable until the day I died. There was absolutely no hope for me. No hope whatsoever. That evening, I sat at the bar and ate some pizza. I could feel my mom's eyes watching me as I finished my food, but I ignored her. I had no appetite anyway. When I was finally finished eating. My mom controls my life since I was a kid until now she wants me to merry that man and brake up with my boyfriend Apollo. He doesn't know it yet, but his presence makes Mom happy, and sometimes I wish she would just stop caring so much. But the second day, I showed up to class, looked at them, and decided I actually liked them. That's when it changed. I didn't spend any time with them, or anything like that. Not because I disliked them - in fact I loved spending time with them - but because they demanded too much, and I felt guilty constantly. So I decided to change my schedule, so I didn't have to go home every week, and to avoid spending time with them I went out every weekend. And that worked for a little bit - my classmates still treated me fairly well, but I soon discovered that people only wanted me because of my mom. The guest finally arrived his name is Mr. Guillebeaux. He walk with his back straight, head high and shoulders back. His hair is cut short, and although he is rather tall, he looks more like he's 6ft 4 and has a thin build than he does 5ft 8 and probably weighs 120 pounds. "Hi," I said when he walked over to our table, "thank you for coming." "Of course, thank you for inviting me," he smiled, pulling out the chair next to mine and sitting down. His voice was smooth and soothing, "I hope I didn't arrive too early, otherwise I wouldn't have seen you." "No, you're fine," I nodded politely. I took a small sip of my coffee and placed it down on the table. Mr. Guillebeaux glanced round the cafeteria; it was mostly empty, except for the people seated at tables. A couple of boys sat by themselves eating their breakfast. There were two girls in the corner talking animatedly to each other. All around us the students were laughing, talking, laughing some more. "So, what are you studying, Rye?" Nicholas ask. "I'm taking engineering," I replied. "I was hoping for an accounting major." "Accounting sounds interesting," commented Nicholas, "and it's certainly easier than finance." "Yeah," I nodded in agreement, "I was also planning on becoming a veterinarian; maybe veterinary school will bring in a little extra money." "Sounds exciting." He grinned, leaning back in his chair. I noticed that his blue tie had a picture of a duck printed on it. "What? what if the media finds out that you have a fiance and then you still have a boyfriend and not my son? That's embarrassing Iha." Mr.Guillebeaux said. "Anak... Alam kung mahirap ito say- "You already know! Then why did you force me to do this!?" Hinarap ko si Mama habang umiiyak. "Iha... " She tried to reach me but I stepped back. "Don't shout at your Mother." "You know nothing! And for the first time he chuckled na akala mo may nakakatawa. "Ma! 20 lang ako! 20! Alam niyo yun diba? Gusto ko pang makapagtapos, Ma!" "Anak..."
