The blood oath

1529 Words
The night broke in half with a scream. Selene’s eyes snapped open before her mind even caught up, heart slamming against her ribs. The air smelled of iron and smoke — the unmistakable scent of blood. Outside, the campfire had long died to ash, and the moon hung high and pale above the trees, swollen with warning. Kael was already on his feet, bare chest glinting faintly in the silver light. “Stay here,” he growled, voice rough with command — the Alpha tone she hated and loved in equal measure. But Selene was already reaching for her boots. “You know I won’t.” Their eyes met, and for a heartbeat the world was still. Something unspoken passed between them — fear, longing, defiance — then the moment shattered with the sound of howls echoing through the valley. Rogues. Kael swore under his breath and threw her his cloak. “If they’ve breached the border—” “They shouldn’t have been able to,” Selene whispered, tugging the cloak tight. Her pulse was a drumbeat. “Unless someone—” She didn’t finish. The truth was there, raw and heavy between them. Kael’s eyes darkened. “We’ll find out soon enough.” They burst into the clearing together. Fires burned at the edges of the camp — crimson against the moonlight. Warriors shifted mid-sprint, fur and bone cracking under the weight of battle. The ground trembled with growls and screams. Selene’s magic surged beneath her skin, wild and alive. She reached for it instinctively, feeling the pulse of the moon thread through her veins. “Selene, no—” Kael caught her wrist. His voice was a plea this time, not an order. “You’ve barely recovered from the last calling. You’ll burn yourself out.” “I can help them.” “I can’t lose you.” Something in his voice broke her breath. For a second, it wasn’t the Alpha speaking, but the man who watched her like she was both salvation and curse. Before she could answer, a shadow moved at the edge of the firelight. Selene froze. The shape was familiar — broad shoulders, a glint of armor, the way the moonlight caught dark hair she knew too well. Rowan. Her heart stopped. He was supposed to be gone, scouting the border. Instead, he stood among the chaos — and behind him, the rogues were not attacking him. They moved with him. “Rowan,” she whispered, disbelief threading her voice. Kael turned, his entire body tensing. “No…” Rowan’s gaze found hers, and in it she saw everything — guilt, longing, pain. The mark on his neck, the one they once shared, glowed faintly under the moonlight. The world tilted. “Why?” Her voice broke. “Tell me this isn’t what it looks like.” Rowan’s jaw clenched, eyes glassy with something like anguish. “You wouldn’t understand.” “Then make me understand!” He stepped closer, and Kael stepped in front of her like a wall of fire. “Stay back,” Kael snarled. His wolf was close to the surface now, voice laced with the sound of something breaking. “You’ve made your choice, traitor.” “I didn’t have a choice,” Rowan said quietly, and the way he said it — soft, broken — made Selene’s chest ache. Kael’s eyes flashed gold. “You betrayed your Alpha. Your pack.” Rowan looked past him, straight at Selene. “I betrayed myself.” The battle roared around them, but for a few heartbeats, there was only the three of them — bound by blood, love, and ruin. Selene felt the prophecy stir in her bones again. When the moon bleeds, the hearts bound in shadow will break the oath or burn beneath it. Her voice trembled. “Rowan… what did you do?” He didn’t answer. But the rogues around him began to fall back, forming a circle. And in his hand, Selene saw the glint of a blade — not steel, but obsidian, carved with runes that pulsed with dark light. Kael’s snarl ripped through the air. “That’s forbidden magic—” “I know,” Rowan said softly. “But it’s the only way to save you.” The obsidian blade shimmered in Rowan’s trembling hand, its runes flickering like dying stars. Selene felt the pull of it, a whisper under her skin — ancient, familiar, and wrong. Her magic recoiled in fear. The Blood Oath wasn’t just forbidden. It was a curse that demanded equal sacrifice. “Rowan, put it down,” she said, voice cracking. “That blade will kill you.” He smiled then, a soft, broken thing. “It already has.” Kael took a step forward, the ground rumbling beneath his bare feet. “You brought this on us.” His voice was low, vibrating with restrained fury. “You let them in, you killed our own—” “I saved them!” Rowan snapped. His mask cracked, desperation flooding through. “The prophecy— the council was going to kill her. They said she was the cause of the curse, Kael. That if Selene lived through another moon cycle, the whole pack would fall.” Selene’s breath caught. “You think I’d destroy the pack?” Rowan’s eyes softened when he looked at her. “No. But they believe it. And I thought—if I played their game, maybe I could protect you.” “You betrayed us to save me?” His silence was answer enough. Kael’s fists tightened at his sides, veins bulging with barely contained rage. “You don’t protect someone by breaking her heart, Rowan. You protect her by standing beside her.” Rowan’s voice cracked. “I stood beside her once. You took that from me.” The words hit like a blade between ribs. Kael’s jaw clenched, and Selene saw the pain flicker in his eyes — not guilt, but memory. Rowan took another step forward, his wolf aura flaring like a dying star. “You think I wanted this? To watch you hold her? To feel her mark fade from mine?” He raised the obsidian dagger, pointing it at Kael. “You marked her to claim her — not to save her.” Kael moved before she could blink, catching Rowan’s wrist mid-swing. The two collided like thunder, snarls and sparks filling the air. Selene’s magic shuddered, sensing the bond between them fracturing. “Stop!” she screamed, but her voice drowned beneath the roar of the wind. The moon above pulsed — a blood-red glow seeping through its light. The prophecy whispered again, this time in her mind: The bond must bleed before it binds anew. “Kael, don’t!” she cried, reaching for him. But it was too late. The dagger turned, not by Rowan’s hand, but by his surrender. He released Kael’s grip and drove the blade into his own chest. The sound that followed wasn’t human — a choking gasp, a strangled breath, the world itself pausing in horror. Selene stumbled forward, catching him before he fell. His blood was warm against her hands, his body trembling. “Why?” she whispered, tears streaking down her cheeks. Rowan’s eyes — pale silver, just like the moon — met hers one last time. “Because I made a promise… to never let the curse take you. Not even if it meant losing myself.” Kael knelt beside them, his anger gone, replaced with quiet disbelief. “Rowan…” “Protect her,” Rowan rasped, voice barely audible. “No matter what she becomes.” And then he was gone. The moon turned crimson. The runes on the dagger flared, and a shockwave ripped through the forest — a storm of light and shadow exploding outward. Selene screamed as the energy surged through her, burning every nerve, every bond. When it cleared, she was alone on the ground, Kael barely conscious beside her, and Rowan’s body nothing but silver ash drifting on the wind. The Blood Oath was complete. Selene pressed a trembling hand to her heart. The mark beneath her skin — once shared between her and Rowan — was gone. But in its place, a new one throbbed, faint and wild. Kael stirred, his eyes fluttering open. “Selene… what happened?” She looked at the bloodied ground where Rowan had fallen. “He saved us. But the prophecy… it isn’t over.” The wind whispered through the trees, carrying Rowan’s final words like a haunting vow: When the moon bleeds, love will not die — it will transform. Selene rose slowly, the ashes swirling around her like silver mist. She could feel the power thrumming beneath her skin — Rowan’s magic, his sacrifice, now bound to her. Kael reached for her hand, and she let him, though her touch was distant, trembling. “Selene,” he murmured, voice breaking. “What are you?” She turned toward the moon, its red light bathing her face. “Marked,” she whispered. “By love, by loss… and by the moon itself.”
