The Clash

The sound of Marcus’s laughter still echoed faintly in the restaurant, mocking Vanessa as she stood frozen at the entrance. His arm had been draped so casually around Chloe, his assistant, their heads bent close together in the kind of intimacy that had been absent from her own marriage for months. And yet, when he looked up and saw her, his face had twisted with anger not guilt. It was the kind of look Marcus wore when he believed he had been wronged. The room fell silent. Forks hovered midair, conversations choked off. The atmosphere thickened until Vanessa could feel the weight of a hundred strangers watching her unravel. “Vanessa,” Marcus said, his voice sharp, cutting through the tension like glass. He pushed back from his chair and stood, towering, eyes blazing. “What the hell is this?” Her lips parted, but no sound came out. The words she wanted to scream..What the hell is that? What the hell is Chloe doing on your arm? clogged in her throat. Because beneath the rage was guilt. Guilt that tasted bitter on her tongue as memories of Liam’s kiss the night before flashed through her mind. Liam stepped forward smoothly, his presence filling the silence. Calm, poised, and annoyingly sure of himself, he tilted his head at Marcus with a faint, dangerous smile. “Funny,” he said, voice low but carrying. “I was about to ask you the same thing.” Gasps rippled through the room. Chloe stiffened in her seat, her face paling, but Marcus didn’t even spare her a glance. His eyes were locked on Liam like a predator’s. “You think you can walk in here with my wife on your arm?” Marcus’s voice rose, vibrating with fury. “You think this is some kind of game?” The word wife should have stung Liam. It should have forced Vanessa to step back into her husband’s orbit, to remember vows and rings and the years they had built together. But instead, it rang hollow. A chain, not a crown. Liam chuckled, the sound sharp and mocking. “Wife? That’s a generous title coming from you, Marcus. Or do you prefer to call her property? Because that’s how you sound.” The restaurant gasped again, the tension snapping tighter. Vanessa’s heart hammered against her ribs. She wanted to say something, to stop this before it turned into a spectacle, but her throat was heavy, her guilt suffocating. Marcus was her husband. Liam was the man she had kissed. Her silence felt like betrayal in every direction. Marcus’s fists curled at his sides. His teeth ground audibly. “Stay away from her, Winston. I don’t care what history you two have. She’s mine. Always will be.” Vanessa flinched at his words, at the arrogance that dripped from them. He sounded like a man defending his territory, not his marriage. Liam leaned lazily against a chair, his composure an infuriating contrast to Marcus’s fury. His voice dropped lower, laced with contempt. “You might want to worry less about me and more about keeping your assistant satisfied. Judging by the look on her face, she’s had plenty of late nights with you already.” The crowd murmured. Chloe went scarlet, shifting uncomfortably under the weight of prying eyes. Marcus snapped. “You son of a..”. He surged forward, fists tightening as though he’d strike. Vanessa’s breath caught. For one terrifying second, she thought Marcus would actually throw a punch. But Liam didn’t flinch. He simply straightened, his calmness turning sharp, his gaze like steel. “You hit me,” Liam said softly, “and this entire city will know you’re not just a cheat you’re a violent one. Think about how that will play with investors already running from your sinking project.” Marcus froze, chest heaving, his fury trembling on the edge of control. The truth in Liam’s words rooted him in place. The silence was suffocating. Vanessa wanted to melt into the floor, to disappear. Every part of her screamed to speak, to do something, but the weight of her guilt shackled her tongue. Finally, Marcus turned his glare on her. “Vanessa, let’s go. Now.” It wasn’t a request. It was a command. The old Vanessa might have obeyed. The one who had once mistaken his control for love, who had given him money when he begged, who had forgiven his endless excuses. But tonight, she couldn’t move. Her heels felt bolted to the floor. And then Liam shifted closer. His hand brushed the small of her back so light, so subtle, but enough to send heat rushing through her veins. He looked down at her, his eyes holding hers, then turned deliberately back to Marcus. “She doesn’t have to go anywhere she doesn’t want to,” Liam said. His voice was calm, steady, yet filled with defiance. “Isn’t that right, Vanessa?” Every gaze in the restaurant shifted to her. Her lips trembled. She could feel Marcus’s fury burning into her, could feel Liam’s steadying presence like a flame against her skin. Her chest constricted with shame. She shouldn’t have let things with Liam go this far. She shouldn’t even be here. And yet..here she was. Vanessa lifted her chin slowly, forcing her voice past the knot in her throat. “I’m.. staying.” The words landed like a grenade. Marcus staggered back a half step, eyes wide with disbelief. “You’re what?” “I said I’m staying,” she repeated, firmer this time. Her hands trembled, but her voice carried. “Go home, Marcus.” For a moment, he simply stared at her. His face twisted, his pride shredded before the eyes of strangers. Then he grabbed his jacket off the back of the chair and shoved past Chloe without even looking at her. The door slammed behind him as he stormed out, the echo rattling through the stunned silence of the restaurant. Liam’s hand remained at her back, steady, protective, but not possessive. His voice was softer now, low enough for only her to hear. “Good,” he murmured. “You finally chose yourself.” Vanessa’s throat tightened. She wanted to deny it, to argue, to shove him away for making her complicit in this mess. But instead, she let herself breathe for the first time all evening. The crowd slowly turned back to their meals, the storm seemingly passed. But Vanessa knew better. Marcus wasn’t gone. Not really. This was only the beginning..
