The Trap at Raven Hall

663 Words
The rain began just after sunset. Hope stood in Adrian's old study, staring at the silver Raven Key resting beside the pocket watch. The message was clear. Bring the first Raven Key to Raven Hall. Come alone. She knew it was a trap. But she also knew she couldn't abandon Ethan. Alexander entered the room quietly. "You've made your decision." Hope nodded. "I'm going." "I expected that." She looked at him. "You'll try to stop me?" Alexander smiled faintly. "No." "I'll try to keep you alive." --- Two hours later... A single black SUV rolled toward the ruins of Raven Hall. Hope drove alone. Or at least... That was what anyone watching would believe. Hidden nearly a kilometer behind her, Marcus led a discreet surveillance team using unmarked vehicles. Alexander had insisted on the plan. "If Raven is watching," he had explained, "they'll expect you to come alone. Marcus stays far enough away not to be seen—but close enough to intervene if everything goes wrong." Hope hoped he was right. --- The ruins looked even more haunting at night. Lightning illuminated the burned remains of the mansion. The ancient stone walls cast long shadows across the wet ground. Hope stepped out of the SUV with the silver Raven Key in her hand. "Hello?" she called. Only the wind answered. Then... A spotlight suddenly illuminated the center of the courtyard. A calm voice echoed from hidden speakers. "Welcome back, Hope Kingsley." "Place the key on the stone." A weathered pedestal stood in the middle of the courtyard. Hope approached cautiously. She placed the key on the stone. Nothing happened. For several seconds... Silence. Then the ground trembled. With a loud grinding noise, the pedestal slowly descended, revealing a hidden staircase beneath it. Hope looked around. "This was here all along?" She switched on her flashlight and carefully descended into the darkness. --- The underground chamber was unlike the dusty tunnels they had explored before. It was clean. Recently used. Electric lights illuminated polished concrete walls. Someone had maintained this place for years. At the end of the corridor stood a large steel door. It slowly opened. Hope stepped inside. The room resembled an old conference hall. A long wooden table occupied the center. At the far end sat a single man. He wore an elegant black suit. His silver tie pin was shaped like a raven. For the first time... His face was visible. He was in his early forties. His dark hair was neatly combed. His expression was calm. Almost welcoming. He stood as Hope entered. "Miss Kingsley." She didn't move. "Where is Ethan?" He smiled politely. "Safe." "For now." Hope's voice was cold. "Who are you?" The man gave a slight bow. "My name is Damien Blackwood." Hope's heart skipped a beat. "Blackwood..." He nodded. "Jonathan Blackwood was my father." The room fell silent. "So you're the one behind Raven." Damien smiled. "I merely inherited what was stolen from my family." Hope stared into his eyes. "My grandfather didn't steal anything." The smile vanished from Damien's face. "That's the lie you've been taught." He slowly reached into his jacket. Hope instinctively tensed. Instead of a weapon... He placed an old leather journal on the table. Hope recognized it instantly. "The journal from Raven Hall." Damien nodded. "My father's journal." "You stole it." "I reclaimed it." He gently opened the first page. "This journal contains the truth Adrian Kingsley buried for fifty years." Hope stepped forward. "Then let me read it." Damien closed the journal again. "In time." He looked directly at her. "But first..." "You deserve to know why this war began." Before Hope could answer, a hidden monitor on the wall flickered to life. An old black-and-white video appeared. The date in the corner read: June 14, 1976. Four young men stood together. Adrian Kingsley. Michael Sterling. Jonathan Blackwood. Richard Knight. The founders of Project Raven. Hope's pulse raced. She was about to witness the moment that changed everything.
