The Rescue

The alarm echoed through the underground complex. Red warning lights flashed across the concrete walls. Damien Blackwood remained calm. He buttoned his suit jacket and looked at Hope with a faint smile. "It seems your friends have arrived." Hope's heart leaped. Alexander. He had come. One of Damien's guards hurried toward him. "Sir, they've breached the outer security gate." "How many?" Damien asked. "At least six." Damien nodded thoughtfully. "So Alexander finally stopped running." He turned back to Hope. "I was hoping he'd come." Hope frowned. "You expected this?" Damien smiled. "I planned for it." --- Meanwhile... In a maintenance tunnel beneath Raven Hall, Alexander led Marcus and five trusted security officers through the darkness. Marcus checked the digital blueprint on his tablet. "The conference chamber is fifty meters ahead." Alexander nodded. "Damien will have reinforced the main entrance." "So we don't use it." Marcus looked surprised. "You know another way?" Alexander stopped beside an old steel pipe. "There's an emergency escape tunnel." "I helped build it." Marcus studied him carefully. "You really were one of them." Alexander's expression darkened. "I was." "And I'll spend the rest of my life making up for it." He pulled a hidden lever. With a loud metallic groan, part of the wall slid open. A narrow passage appeared. Marcus smiled. "Lead the way." --- Back inside the conference hall... Hope kept Damien talking. "You don't actually want the Raven Archive." Damien tilted his head. "No?" "You want revenge." For the first time, Damien's calm expression faltered. "My father lost everything." "He lost his friends." "His life's work." "And finally..." "His life." Hope answered quietly. "My grandfather lost friends too." Damien laughed bitterly. "History always sounds kinder when the winners write it." Before Hope could respond... The lights suddenly went out. The room was plunged into darkness. A second later— Crash! The emergency door exploded inward. Smoke filled the hall. "Move!" someone shouted. Marcus and his team rushed inside. Alexander was the first through the doorway. Their eyes met. "Hope!" "I'm here!" Damien stepped backward. "So predictable." He pressed a button hidden beneath the table. Heavy steel shutters slammed down over every exit. Marcus tried the nearest door. "It's locked!" Damien smiled. "I told you." "I planned for this." --- Hidden speakers crackled to life. "My father taught me one important lesson." "Never corner your enemy..." "...unless you've already prepared the escape." The floor beneath Damien slowly opened. A concealed elevator. Hope ran forward. "Stop him!" Alexander lunged. Their hands almost touched. But Damien stepped into the elevator. The doors closed. He gave Alexander one final smile. "We'll meet again." The elevator disappeared below. Hope reached the edge just as it vanished. "He escaped." Alexander placed a hand on her shoulder. "We'll find him." Marcus interrupted. "Forget Damien." "Look." At the far end of the chamber stood another reinforced door. Unlike the others... It had been left unlocked. Hope pushed it open. Inside was a single prison cell. A man slowly stood. His clothes were torn. His face showed signs of exhaustion. But his eyes were unmistakable. "Ethan..." Hope whispered. Ethan smiled weakly. "I knew you'd come." Hope rushed into the cell and hugged him tightly. Tears filled both their eyes. "We're taking you home." Ethan embraced her. "I'm sorry." "For what?" "I should have told you about Raven years ago." Hope looked at him. "You knew?" He nodded. "Not everything." "But enough." Alexander stepped into the cell. "Ethan..." Ethan looked up. For several seconds... Neither man spoke. Then Ethan smiled sadly. "You look just like your father." Alexander lowered his head. "I wish I'd known him better." Before anyone could ask another question... A timer began flashing on the wall. 05:00 Marcus's expression changed instantly. "It's a bomb." The countdown had begun.
