Escape from Raven Hall

570 Words
Darkness swallowed the underground chamber. The only sound was the crumbling of stone as dust rained from the ceiling. Hope froze. She had heard the voice. It wasn't an echo. Someone else was down there. "Everyone, stay together!" Marcus ordered. The security chief immediately pulled a tactical flashlight from his backpack and switched it on. One by one, the others turned on their emergency lights. The narrow chamber flickered back into view. But it was no longer empty. The leather journal was gone. Hope stared at the desk. "It was right here." Marcus swept his flashlight across the room. "No one could have reached it without us seeing." A faint laugh echoed through the tunnel. Hope turned toward the sound. "Who's there?" No answer. Instead... Footsteps. Slow. Calm. Deliberate. They echoed from somewhere deeper inside the underground passage. Marcus stepped in front of Hope. "Stay behind me." The group cautiously followed the sound until the tunnel opened into a second chamber. Unlike the first, this room looked untouched. Old paintings still hung on the walls. A large fireplace stood against one side, blackened by smoke. In the center of the room sat a long wooden table. At its far end rested a small black box. Hope approached carefully. There was a note attached to it. "For Hope Kingsley." Noah grabbed her arm. "It could be a trap." Marcus examined the box. "No explosives." Hope slowly opened the lid. Inside was a silver key engraved with a raven. Beneath it lay another handwritten note. «One key found. Three remain.» Hope looked up. "This was left for us." "But why?" Before anyone could answer, the ground shook violently. Crack! A section of the ceiling collapsed behind them, blocking the tunnel they had used to enter. "We're trapped!" Lily cried. Marcus quickly scanned the room. "There has to be another exit." Ethan noticed fresh air drifting through a narrow passage behind the fireplace. "There!" The group hurried through the cramped tunnel as more rocks crashed down behind them. Hope clutched the silver key tightly. The passage grew steeper until, finally, sunlight appeared ahead. One by one, they climbed out onto a wooded hillside behind the ruins of Raven Hall. Everyone took a deep breath. They had escaped. But when Marcus counted the group, his expression changed. "Wait..." He looked around. "Where's Noah?" Hope's heart stopped. Her father had been walking directly behind her. "Noah!" she shouted. Only silence answered. Then... From somewhere inside the collapsing ruins came a single gunshot. Hope's face turned white. "Dad!" She tried to run back toward the entrance, but Marcus grabbed her. "It's too dangerous!" "I have to go back!" "The tunnel is gone!" Hope struggled against him, tears filling her eyes. Another sound echoed through the ruins. Not a gunshot this time. A phone vibration. Marcus looked at Hope. "Your phone." Her hands trembled as she answered. An unfamiliar voice spoke calmly. "If you want to see Noah Kingsley alive again..." Hope's breathing stopped. "...bring me Adrian's pocket watch." The line went dead. Hope stared at the phone in horror. The mysterious enemy had taken the one thing she could never afford to lose. Not a document. Not money. Her father. As the wind swept across the burned remains of Raven Hall, Hope realized the game had changed. This was no longer a search for the truth. It had become a fight to save her family. .
