The Letter That Should Never Have Existed

509 Words
The security alarm screamed through the mansion. Red emergency lights flashed across the dark hallways. Hope instinctively folded Adrian's letter and slipped it inside her jacket. "Everyone, stay behind me," Ethan ordered, his voice calm despite the chaos. Even in retirement, the former CEO commanded the room with quiet authority. Outside the library, hurried footsteps echoed along the corridor. Bang! The library doors flew open. Three masked figures dressed in black tactical clothing rushed inside. They weren't ordinary thieves. Their movements were precise. One headed straight for Adrian's display cabinet. Another made for the old archive shelves. The third looked directly at Hope. "Take the letter!" he shouted. Hope's heart pounded. They knew about the letter. But how? Security guards stormed into the room. "Freeze!" The intruders reacted instantly. Smoke grenades rolled across the polished wooden floor. Within seconds, thick gray smoke filled the library. People coughed and struggled to see. Hope held the letter tightly against her chest. Someone grabbed her wrist. She reacted without thinking, twisting free and striking the attacker's arm with a heavy history book lying on the table. The masked man staggered backward. "She has it!" he yelled. Before he could recover, Noah appeared beside Hope. "Go!" Hope ran through a hidden doorway behind one of the library bookcases—a passage Adrian had secretly built decades earlier during renovations. Only the Kingsley family knew it existed. She pulled the hidden lever. The bookshelf swung shut behind her. Silence. The narrow stone passage was dimly lit by emergency lights. Hope leaned against the wall, trying to steady her breathing. She unfolded the letter again. There wasn't much time. She continued reading. «The danger facing our family is older than Kingsley Global itself.» «Many years before I built the company, a group of powerful men created an organization known only as The Circle.» Hope frowned. The Circle? She had never heard that name before. She read on. «I believed they had disappeared. I was wrong.» «If this letter has reached you, they have returned.» A loud crash echoed from the other side of the hidden wall. The intruders were searching the library. Hope continued reading. «Trust very few people. The Circle has influence in governments, banks, corporations, and even charities. They do not seek money alone. They seek control.» Her hands trembled. Could such an organization really exist? Suddenly her phone vibrated. It was a secure message from Lily. DON'T LEAVE THE PASSAGE. ONE OF THE GUARDS IS AN IMPOSTOR. Hope's eyes widened. Someone inside their own security team had betrayed them. At that exact moment, footsteps echoed inside the hidden tunnel. Slow. Deliberate. Someone else knew about the secret passage. Hope switched off her flashlight and stepped quietly behind a stone pillar. The footsteps came closer. Closer. A shadow appeared at the end of the passage. The figure removed a black mask. Hope gasped. It wasn't a stranger. It was someone she had trusted for years. Someone who smiled gently and whispered, "I'm sorry, Hope." "But the Circle always collects what belongs to it."
