The moment Hope pulled the bronze lever, a deep rumble echoed through the tunnel.
Rrrrrrr...
The stone floor shook violently.
Victor's expression changed for the first time.
"What did you do?"
Hope didn't answer.
Adrian Kingsley had always planned several steps ahead. If he had built this secret passage, he would never have created only one exit.
A section of the wall behind Hope slowly slid open, revealing a narrow staircase leading downward.
At the same time, thick steel gates dropped from the ceiling, separating Hope from Victor and his men.
Bang!
The gates slammed into place.
Victor rushed forward, but the barrier was too strong.
"After her!" he shouted.
His men searched frantically for another way through.
Hope didn't hesitate.
She raced down the staircase, clutching Adrian's letter tightly.
Behind her, Victor's voice echoed through the tunnel.
"You can run today, Hope Kingsley..."
"...but you can't hide forever!"
The hidden staircase seemed endless.
Dust filled the air, and the ancient stone walls bore signs of age.
As Hope reached the bottom, she found another wooden door.
Above it was a brass plaque.
Built by Adrian Kingsley – For My Family's Safety.
Hope felt tears well in her eyes.
Even decades after his death, Adrian was still protecting his family.
She pushed the door open.
Beyond it was an underground chamber unlike anything she had expected.
The room was filled with shelves of journals, blueprints, maps, and locked cabinets.
In the center stood a large oak table.
On top of it lay a leather journal.
Its cover bore Adrian's initials.
Beside it rested an old tape recorder.
Hope slowly pressed the play button.
Static filled the room.
Then...
Adrian's voice echoed through the chamber.
«"If you're listening to this, then the Circle has returned."»
Hope froze.
Hearing her grandfather's voice again after so many years sent chills through her body.
«"I hoped this day would never come."»
«"If it has, then my family is in greater danger than I ever imagined."»
Hope listened intently.
«"The Circle is older than Kingsley Global."»
«"For generations, they have manipulated governments, corporations, and financial institutions."»
«"When I was a young businessman, they offered me unimaginable wealth and unlimited influence."»
Hope's heart pounded.
«"I refused."»
The recording paused briefly before continuing.
«"From that day forward, they became my enemies."»
Hope understood now.
This wasn't about money.
It was about revenge.
Suddenly, a hidden monitor on the wall flickered to life.
Someone had activated the underground security system.
A live camera feed showed Ethan, Noah, Amelia, Isabella, Grace, and Lily safely leaving the museum under police protection.
Hope sighed with relief.
"They're safe."
But another camera showed Victor Black calmly walking out of the museum's front entrance.
No one stopped him.
No one questioned him.
He simply disappeared into a waiting black limousine.
Hope frowned.
"How?"
He had escaped as if he belonged there.
Her phone vibrated.
An unknown number had sent a single message.
«Welcome to the game, Hope Kingsley.»
A second message appeared.
«Your grandfather won the first battle.»
«You won't win the second.»
Then a photograph downloaded automatically.
Hope's blood ran cold.
It showed Lily leaving the police station only minutes earlier.
Someone had been watching her.
A final message appeared beneath the photo.
«Everyone you love is now a target.»
Hope clenched her fists.
Fear slowly gave way to determination.
She looked at Adrian's journal, then at the old recording device.
"No," she whispered.
"You chose the wrong family."
She picked up the journal and slipped it into her bag.
"If Grandpa fought you..."
"...then I'll finish what he started."
Far away, inside the black limousine, Victor Black watched the museum disappear in the distance.
He smiled as he held the other half of the torn photograph.
"The game has finally begun."
