The Crystal Key

593 Words
Rain hammered the gardens of Kingsley Estate. For a long moment, no one moved. Hope knelt beneath the ancient oak tree, clutching the crystal key in one hand and Adrian's letter in the other. Alexander was on one knee, blood soaking through the shoulder of his jacket. Damien Blackwood stood only a few meters away, his pistol still raised. His men slowly surrounded the oak. "Put the key on the ground," Damien said calmly. Hope's fingers tightened around it. "No." Damien sighed. "I was hoping this wouldn't become difficult." Marcus stepped in front of Hope, aiming his weapon. "You'll have to go through us first." Damien smiled. "I already planned to." With a slight wave of his hand, more Raven operatives emerged from the darkness. There were dozens of them. The Kingsley security team was badly outnumbered. --- Alexander forced himself to his feet despite the pain. Blood dripped from his wounded shoulder. "Hope." She looked at him. "When I give the signal..." "Run." Hope shook her head. "I'm not leaving you." Alexander smiled faintly. "You're starting to make that a habit." Even in the middle of danger, Hope almost laughed. Then Damien spoke again. "You know, Alexander..." "I admired your father." Alexander's expression hardened. "You murdered him." Damien tilted his head. "No." "My father did." Silence fell over the garden. Hope stared at Damien in disbelief. "What?" Damien lowered his pistol. "My father, Jonathan Blackwood, believed Richard Knight had betrayed Project Raven." "He executed him." Alexander's jaw clenched. "I watched my father die because of Raven." Damien nodded. "So did I." Hope frowned. "You expect us to feel sorry for you?" Damien looked away toward the oak tree. "My father destroyed both our families." "But Adrian Kingsley finished what he started." Hope's voice grew cold. "My grandfather spent his life helping people." Damien looked directly into her eyes. "And yet he left one innocent man to carry the blame." Before Hope could ask what he meant— The estate lights suddenly went out. Everything plunged into darkness. Marcus cursed under his breath. "They cut the main power." Only flashes of lightning illuminated the gardens. --- In the darkness, Alexander whispered, "Now." Hope didn't hesitate. She grabbed the crystal key and Adrian's letter and sprinted toward the mansion. Marcus and the remaining guards opened fire, forcing Raven's operatives to take cover. Damien shouted, "Don't let her escape!" Footsteps thundered behind Hope. She raced through the rain, her heart pounding. The crystal key felt strangely warm in her hand. As she reached the library doors, she noticed something extraordinary. The key was glowing. A faint blue light pulsed from within the crystal. Hope stopped. The light pointed toward Adrian's portrait above the fireplace. "No..." She stepped inside. The glow became brighter. She approached the portrait. Behind her, Raven operatives crashed through the front doors of the estate. Marcus shouted from outside, "Hope, go!" Ignoring the chaos, Hope held the crystal key closer to the portrait. A soft click echoed through the room. The portrait slowly swung outward. Hidden behind it was a narrow steel door no one in the family had ever known existed. Hope's breath caught. "My grandfather..." He had built a secret room inside his own home. Without hesitation, she stepped through the doorway. The steel door closed automatically behind her. Outside, Damien entered the library just seconds too late. He stared at the sealed wall where the portrait had once hung. For the first time since the war began... His calm expression disappeared. "No..." He whispered. "Adrian..." "You hid it here."
