Smoke drifted through the Founders' Vault.
The shattered steel doors groaned as Damien Blackwood stepped inside, followed by a dozen Raven operatives.
For several seconds, no one moved.
Damien stared at the elderly man standing beside the stone table.
His voice was barely above a whisper.
"Gabriel Ashford..."
"So you really survived."
Gabriel stood calmly, the old revolver lowered at his side.
"I survived because Adrian refused to let another founder die."
Damien shook his head.
"No."
"My father told me Adrian betrayed everyone."
Gabriel sighed.
"Jonathan told you the story that justified his choices."
Hope stepped forward, the Fourth Founder Key hidden safely in her jacket.
"Then tell us what really happened."
---
Gabriel looked around the vault.
"For years, we believed we could protect the world by working in secret."
"At first, we succeeded."
"We rescued children."
"We dismantled criminal networks."
"We exposed powerful people who believed they were untouchable."
Alexander nodded.
"My father believed in that mission."
"He did," Gabriel replied.
"Richard Knight was the conscience of Project Raven."
Damien folded his arms.
"And my father?"
Gabriel's expression grew heavy.
"Jonathan was brilliant."
"He saw patterns the rest of us missed."
"But over time..."
"He stopped trusting people."
"He began believing only Raven could decide what was right."
Hope remembered the old recording.
"He wanted control."
Gabriel nodded.
"Adrian argued that no one should have that much power."
---
The elderly founder slowly walked to one of the cabinets.
He removed a worn leather folder.
"This is the original Founders' Charter."
He opened it.
Every signature was still visible.
Adrian Kingsley.
Michael Sterling.
Jonathan Blackwood.
Richard Knight.
Gabriel Ashford.
Gabriel pointed to a paragraph near the bottom.
"When Jonathan demanded complete control of the Archive, the rest of us voted."
Hope held her breath.
"The vote was..."
Gabriel answered quietly.
"Four against one."
Damien's face hardened.
"So my father lost."
"Yes."
"And he accepted that?"
Gabriel looked into Damien's eyes.
"No."
"He took the Archive by force."
The room fell silent.
---
Damien's voice trembled.
"That's impossible."
"My father said Adrian stole everything."
Gabriel slowly shook his head.
"No."
"Jonathan tried to seize the Archive."
"Richard was wounded protecting it."
"Michael helped civilians escape Raven Hall."
"And Adrian..."
"...stayed behind to save Jonathan."
Hope blinked in surprise.
"My grandfather tried to save him?"
Gabriel nodded.
"He did."
"But Jonathan believed Adrian had come to stop him."
"The fire spread before either man could explain."
Damien lowered his gaze.
For the first time, uncertainty appeared in his eyes.
"My father..."
"He lied to me."
Gabriel answered gently.
"I believe Jonathan eventually lied to himself."
---
A long silence filled the vault.
Then Marcus's voice echoed from the tunnel.
"More Raven operatives are coming!"
Alexander looked toward Hope.
"We're running out of time."
Damien slowly looked at Gabriel.
"If everything you've said is true..."
"...then why did Adrian hide you?"
Gabriel smiled sadly.
"Because someone had to protect the Archive."
"And Adrian knew Jonathan would never stop searching."
Hope finally understood.
"My grandfather didn't erase you..."
"He sacrificed his own reputation to keep you alive."
Gabriel nodded.
"He carried that burden for fifty years."
Before anyone could speak again, a young Raven operative rushed into the vault.
"Sir!"
He looked at Damien.
"Government forces have surrounded Kingsley Estate."
"They're moving this way."
Damien's eyes narrowed.
He had only minutes left to make a choice.
Fight for the Archive...
Or escape.
He looked once more at Gabriel.
Then at Hope.
For the first time since the war began...
Damien lowered his weapon.
