5 JESSE I'd probably only sat there an hour before the pungent aroma of approaching bear permeated my senses. I stiffened in alertness, but quickly recognized... what was I to call him? He wasn't exactly my friend. I could call him my savior if he hadn't inadvertently caused my injury. He appeared from behind the rocks to my right, and I gulped at the sight of him. In broad daylight, he was bigger than I remembered. I was somewhat familiar with the black bears common to Tennessee, but this guy looked like he could have eaten one of them for breakfast. He clearly wasn't from around here. His fur was long and shaggy all over, and his face full and fluffy. If you'd shrunk him down to a hundredth of his size, he might have looked like a stuffed teddy bear if not for the long canines peeking
