Relief flooded through me when Gwen showed up in the enclosure. She listened patiently as I explained what happened, only nodding here and then.
I gestured to the den. “And that’s where she is now. What should we do?”
The head keeper thought for a moment, tapping her finger against her chin. “I’ll think of something. Have you alerted the senior vet?”
“I tried but I got no response.”
She nodded. “Alright, I’ll see if I can deal with Kiki. You go to the clinic to get Baker.”
Her direct instructions were very welcome and as autonomous and independent as I wanted to be, it was good to have directions. Maybe somewhere in the future, I wouldn’t freak out like this when an animal got hurt, but at the moment, I was very aware that I didn’t know nearly enough.
