Chapter 2: Not Like Other Girls

1275 Words
She didn't go to the police station immediately. She was taken to a detention facility managed by the Gu family's security—a private place of holding, essentially a cold, lonely cell. For two days, Su Wei sat in the dim light. She wasn't physically hurt, but the mental torture was heavy. She was terrified. Not for herself, but for her brother, Xiao Yu, who was alone in the hospital, expecting her to come visit him soon. Xiao Yu... sister is sorry... On the second day, the heavy iron door finally opened. Gu Zhenting—the old man—walked in. He looked completely different now. His back was straight, his eyes were sharp and clear, full of authority. He was no longer the confused old man. Behind him stood Gu Yichen, his face still dark, arms crossed. "My child!" The Old Master rushed forward when he saw Su Wei. She looked pale, her beautiful face slightly gaunt, her eyes red from crying and lack of sleep. She looked like a fragile flower that had been stepped on. "Oh my God! What have you done to her?" The Old Master turned around, his cane slamming hard against the floor. "Yichen! How dare you treat my savior like a criminal?!" Yichen frowned. "She saved me!" The Old Master continued to rant, his voice echoing in the small room. "I had an episode! I wandered off! I was attacked by robbers! This girl risked her life to chase them away! She protected me! And you? You locked her up? You accused her of k********g?" Yichen froze. His eyes widened slightly. He looked at Su Wei, then back at his grandfather. "Robbers?" Yichen slowly turned his head to look at Su Wei. She was standing there, hugging herself, looking at him with eyes that were not angry, just... sad and tired. The realization hit him like a punch to the gut. He had wronged her. He had called her a criminal. He had destroyed her dignity. And she was actually the hero. He felt a strange twist in his chest. It wasn't guilt—not yet. It was disbelief and shock. Disbelief that someone so seemingly ordinary could do something so extraordinary, and shock that he had misjudged her so completely. "I am so sorry, child," The Old Master held Su Wei’s hands gently. "I am so sorry for my grandson's rudeness. Come. Let's get out of this horrible place." Gu Yichen watched his old man pull the strange girl away, his eyes a cold, dark, bottomless abyss. ''Lu Shan" he called. A tall seemingly young man appeared from behind the door. "Boss" the assistant answered. "Get me the footage from that day!" ---------------------------------------------- The Old Master insisted on taking Su Wei home himself. He sat with her in the back seat of the luxury car, apologizing repeatedly. "It's alright sir you don't need to keep apologizing, it was all a misunderstanding and its resolved now" Su Wei said softly. She wasn't offended and was just glad that everything was over. "What sir! Call me grandpa from now on. You saved my life and that makes you my own granddaughter! And what should I call you?!" Su Wei blinked for a minute before replying slowly. "Su Wei" "A beautiful name! how about I call you 'Wei Wei or Xiao Wei?' Xiao Wei from now on call me Grandpa! Go ahead and try it!" The old man was full of energy quite different from when she first met him and he seemed nice unlike a certain someone. "Grandpa" Su Wei whispered. Gu Zhenting was ecstatic. "Where do we take you?" the Old Master asked softly. "How about you come home with me first to eat something and rest first?" Su Wei hesitated, then whispered, "Can... can we go to the Central Hospital first? My brother is there. He is waiting for me. I haven't seen him in days." The Old Master’s eyes softened. "Of course. Driver, go to Central Hospital immediately." When they arrived at the hospital, Su Wei rushed into the ward. The room was simple, clean but basic. Lying on the bed was a young boy, pale and thin, but with eyes similar to Su Wei's. "Xiao Yu!" "Sister!" The boy smiled weakly. "I knew you would come." Su Wei held him, tears finally falling. "I'm sorry I was late. Are you in pain?" The Old Master stood at the doorway, watching silently. He saw how gentle Su Wei was. He saw the love between them. "Doctor," the Old Master called out later, pulling the attending physician aside. "What is wrong with the boy?" The doctor sighed. "It's congenital heart disease. His heart is very weak. He needs surgery, but more than that... he needs a heart transplant. Without it, he won't live past twenty." "And the cost?" "It's extremely high, sir," the doctor said quietly. "The surgery, the medication, finding a matching donor... it costs millions. Not many can afford it." The Old Master looked at Su Wei, who was smiling and talking with her brother without a care in the world. He understood now. This beautiful girl was carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders. Gu Zhenting patiently waited for Su Wei to finish with her brother against the advice of his butler/driver. After an hour Su Wei walked out of the ward and was surprised to see the old man still waiting for her. She entered the car on Grandpa Gu's insistence and he dropped her home although not without trying to convince her to go with him. ---------------------------------------------- That evening, back at his mansion, the Old Master ordered his butler. "Run a full background check on Su Wei. I want to know everything about her." Within hours, the file was on his desk. Gu Zhenting read it carefully, and his heart sank. Su Wei, age 22. Father: A known gambler and alcoholic. Currently missing, leaving behind debts. Mother: Left the family years ago. Situation: Su Wei dropped out of school to work. She took her younger brother and left their hometown to escape creditors and her father's violence. She has been working multiple jobs to survive and pay for her brother's treatment. No reliable relatives. She is entirely alone. "She is only twenty-two..." the Old Master murmured, touching the photo of her smiling face. "She has been carrying everything alone..." Gu Yichen walked into the study. He had been thinking about what happened. He had seen the footage. He had been wrong. He still felt awkward, but his pride wouldn't let him apologize easily. "Grandpa?" The Old Master looked up, his eyes serious. "Yichen, look at this." He pushed the file towards his grandson. "Read it." Yichen took the file and read through it slowly. His expression changed slightly. Gambler father? Escaping debt? Working to save her brother? He had imagined she was some schemer looking for easy money. But the reality was... she was struggling to survive. She was protecting her brother. And yet, when she saved the Old Master, she didn't ask for a single cent. "She is a good girl," the Old Master said softly. "She has a heart of gold, even though life has treated her so roughly. She saved my life, Yichen. And look at what we did to her. We threw her in jail." Yichen looked down, his jaw tightening. "I... I will compensate her. I will give her a check. Whatever amount she wants." "Money?" The Old Master scoffed. "She refused money before. She is not like other women." The Old Master leaned forward, his eyes gleaming with determination. "You will apologize to her."
