Chapter 4: An Unexpected Guest

1120 Words
The car pulled up to the mansion, and Yichen stepped out, loosening his tie slightly. The fatigue from a long day at work weighed on his shoulders, but his expression remained calm and composed. Yanzhou walked beside him, chattering away as usual. "Bro, I'm telling you, Grandpa was so happy today! He kept talking about someone, saying he met a really amazing girl who saved him. Oh right! That must be the lady we're meeting today! I wonder what she looks like..." Gu Yichen listened to his endless yapping silently, walking straight through the main door. Before even reached the lounge, he heard it. Laughter. Clear, bright, and happy sounds echoing through the hallway. He paused for a second. It had been a long time since the house sounded this lively. Yichen walked in, steps steady. His dark eyes swept across the room, and instantly, they locked onto a figure sitting next to his grandfather. It was her. He stopped in my tracks. Su Wei. Gu Yichen looked at her carefully. She was dressed simply, but her natural beauty was striking. She was smiling, looking bright and gentle, completely different from how she looked that day in the detention room. He knew what she had done. He knew she had risked herself to protect Grandpa. Deep down, he felt a sense of gratitude. He knew she was a good person. But that didn't mean he knew how to interact with her. Yichen's nature was cold, and he wasn't used to being warm or friendly with strangers. He just stood there, observing her in silence. But the moment her eyes met his, it was like someone pressed a pause button. The smile vanished instantly. The light in her eyes dimmed. She seemed to shrink back slightly, lowering her head quickly, not daring to look at him anymore. She looked nervous, even frightened. Did she think he was still angry? He didn't want to scare her, but he didn't know how to reassure her either. "Yichen, you're back," Grandpa spoke up. "Greet Weiwei properly." He walked closer, standing tall. He looked down at her, his face keeping its usual calm, indifferent mask, though his heart wasn't actually cold. "So you are here," he said, voice low and steady, sounding neutral. "I didn't know we had guests today." Gu Yichen didn't say anything else. He wasn't good with words, especially not in front of others. Grandpa humped, displeased. "H.... hi, I'm Su Wei" she stuttered. Behind his older brother, Yanzhou’s eyes were already shining. He had heard Grandpa talk about her so much—this was the brave girl who saved his grandfather! He rushed over excitedly, ignoring the serious atmosphere. "Wow! So you really are the lady Grandpa told me about!" Yanzhou grinned widely, looking at her with admiration. "Hello! I'm Gu Yanzhou, the younger brother! You are even prettier than I imagined! Thank you for taking care of our Grandpa!" He was just about to sit down and chat more when Grandpa suddenly coughed loudly and tapped his cane. "Yanzhou! Don't crowd her, give her some space!" Yanzhou immediately stood up straight, putting his hands behind his back like an obedient student, but he stuck out his tongue playfully and winked at Su Wei secretly. "Hahaha! Yes, Grandpa! I'm just saying thank you! I'm being very polite!" "I'm going to change first," Gu Yichen said plainly, turning to Grandpa. "I'll be down shortly." He turned and walked straight towards the private elevator, leaving the room. Yanzhou didn't dare to disturb them further, but he gave her one last bright smile before bouncing off, still humming happily. ---------------------------------------------- Gu Yichen's Room Up in his private quarters, silence reigned supreme. The air was cool and quiet, a stark contrast to the noise downstairs. Gu Yichen walked into the bathroom and twisted the tap. Hot water rushed out immediately, cascading down his tall, muscular frame, washing away the fatigue and stress of the entire workday. But his mind refused to rest. It kept replaying the scene he had just witnessed in the living room. He leaned his forehead against the cold tiles, closing his eyes, and her face appeared in his mind instantly. She looked so timid when she saw him. "Did I really scare her that badly?" He thought back to the security footage he had ordered to be reviewed. He could still see it clearly—her small hands trembling as she gripped that iron pipe, her legs probably shaking, yet she didn't run. She stood her ground firmly, placing herself right in front of Grandpa, shielding him with her own body. And then... his thoughts turned to the background report he had read. That useless father of hers, a drunkard and a gambler. The debts left behind. Her sick brother. He knew everything about how she had to drop out of school, working herself to the bone just to survive and keep her brother alive. Yet, when she had the chance, she didn't ask for money. She didn't demand rewards. "She really is a strange girl," he thought, frowning slightly. She looks so fragile, so soft that you’re afraid she might break if you touch her, but she’s actually incredibly tough. She is kind, yet she hides so much pain and strength behind those eyes. Yichen turned off the shower and stepped out, wrapping a towel securely around his waist. Water droplets slid down his sculpted chest and defined abs as he walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window, gazing out at the sprawling, glittering night view of Jincheng. He was grateful to her. Truly. She saved the most important person in his life. But his feelings were tangled, complicated, and hard to sort out. Gu Yichen's mind drifted back to the living room again. He remembered how Yanzhou had bounded over to her the moment he left. He was chattering nonstop, smiling, flirting so naturally and easily... and she actually looked relaxed with him. He even saw her giggle softly. A sudden, sharp, and inexplicable feeling stabbed at his chest. It was faint, but it was there. "Why is she so comfortable with him?" "Why can Yanzhou joke around with her freely, but the moment she sees me, she closes herself off completely?" He didn't like it. Grandpa seemed to like her too much. Far more than just a guest. What exactly is Grandpa planning? Yichen wondered, dark eyes deep and unreadable as they stared into the night. "Why is he trying so hard to bring her into our lives?" He stood there by the window for a very long time, lost in his thoughts. The image of that beautiful, timid face lingered stubbornly in his mind, refusing to fade away.
