Asher's POV
"Alpha Asher," Daniel called, darting a look at Abigail who stood grumpily beside me.
"You left in such a hurry, I presume everything is fine?" He asked and I nodded, moving closer to hold Abigail's hands.
She shifted away, pulling her hands behind her back.
"Abigail—please," I begged, staring into her eyes before reaching for her hands again, intertwining her fingers in mine.
"I swear by the moon goddess Abigail, I'll tell you everything you need to know, please, I just need you out there with me," I added, pulling her closer to me.
My heart tugged painfully with the tears that welled in her eyes.
I had lied, and there was no way to justify it even if there were a thousand and one ways to.
She swallowed hard and turned to me, a small smile played on her face while I leaned closer to wipe the tears that welled in the corner of her eyes and kissed her forehead before leading her out.
"Alpha Asher," The elders called out as I walked into the room, their eyes darting between Abigail and me.
"Alpha Asher, why are you holding Abigail's hands, she's a murderer don't you know, she... just pushed me off the staircase to lose my pregnancy," Amanda said from the middle of the crowd where she stood.
I felt Abigail's hands stiffen in mine. I turned and pulled her closer, turning to Amanda who had squeezed herself past the crowd to the front.
"I suppose you know that I'm an Alpha right?" I asked and she nodded, staring loathingly at Abigail.
"If you tell one more lie against Abigail, I'll not only see to it that you lose that pregnancy, I'll make sure that you lose your life as well," I said, my gaze landing on Christopher who cowered.
"Abigail is my mate," I announced, wrapping my fingers tighter around hers. The room was silent, save for nothing but their ragged breaths and glaring eyes.
"T—that cannot be Alpha Asher, Abigail cannot be your mate, she is..."
"Yours? Is that what you were going to say?" I cut in on Christopher's words.
"You must have gotten so used to me pretending to be a gamma beside you that you do not know the difference when you're talking to an Alpha in a higher position than you are," I said, shattering his ego.
"She is still my mate..."
"She is not your f*****g mate Christopher, She isn't now and will never be," I pronounced, watching as he recoiled in embarrassment.
"For an Alpha who cannot keep his head clear and see the difference between a slut who left him for another alpha because he had money and comes back, after rejecting him because all the money had been squandered, you sure have a lot of guts," I said, pulling Abi closer.
Christopher's face turned red with anger and embarrassment but he clenched his jaw, holding himself back.
"You dare speak to me like that?" he growled, trying to ascertain some kind of power.
I let out a low chuckle. "I don’t dare—I do." My grip on Abigail’s hand tightened. "You rejected her, humiliated her, and threw her away like she was nothing. And now, you think you can still call her your mate? You lost that right the moment you chose Amanda over her."
Amanda’s face twisted in anger. "I didn’t come back because of money! I came back because I still love Christopher!"
I raised a brow. "Oh? So that’s why you framed Abigail?"
Gasps echoed around the room. Amanda’s eyes widened, but she quickly masked her shock. "I—I didn’t frame anyone!"
"Then how do you explain the footage?" I asked, tilting my head.
Her mouth opened, then closed. She looked at Christopher, silently begging for help, but he only swallowed hard, his eyes darting around the room.
I exhaled sharply. "Enough of this nonsense. Abigail is my mate. If anyone has a problem with that, you can leave this pack right now."
The elders shifted uncomfortably, their murmurs growing louder.
"Alpha Asher," one of them finally spoke. "This is a serious matter. Are you certain—"
"Yes," I cut in, my voice firm. "I have never been more certain of anything in my life."
I turned to Abigail, squeezing her hand gently. She looked up at me, her eyes still guarded, but I saw the flicker of something else—hope.
"Now," I continued, my gaze sweeping across the room, "is there anyone else who wants to challenge my decision?"
Silence.
Christopher lowered his gaze. Amanda clenched her fists but said nothing.
Good.
"And just so you know, you're not getting that loan that you're seeking out because I refuse to sign a loan agreement with a so-called alpha who cannot make decisions with his head but the useless thing in between his legs," I cussed.
His face reddened with humiliation as his fists clenched at his sides, his entire body trembling with rage.
His ego had just been ripped apart in front of the entire pack, and there was nothing he could do about it. He opened his mouth, then shut it just as quickly, realizing no comeback wouldn’t make him look even weaker.
Amanda, on the other hand, was seething. Her face contorted with fury, and I could practically hear the grinding of her teeth. "You can't do this!" she spat. "Christopher is still an Alpha! You don’t have the right to—"
"I have every right," I cut in coldly. "And if you keep running your mouth, Amanda, I will make sure you regret it."
A shudder ran through her as my words sank in. She knew I wasn’t bluffing.
Christopher exhaled sharply, trying to salvage what little dignity he had left. "This isn't over, Asher," he muttered, turning on his heel and pushing through the crowd. Amanda hurried after him, but not before casting one last venomous glare at Abigail.
I turned my attention back to the elders. "If any of you have concerns, speak now."
No one did.
"Good," I said, my tone final. "Abigail stays by my side. She is my mate, and anyone who dares to touch her will face consequences far worse than what Christopher just experienced."
I felt Abigail's fingers twitch in mine, and when I glanced at her, she was staring at me with something unreadable in her eyes.
I gave her hand a reassuring squeeze. This wasn’t just about proving a point—it was about making sure she never had to suffer humiliation or betrayal again.
She was mine.
And I was never letting her go.
