Chapter 4

664 Words
"It's Rosie's birthday today. I just wanted to play with her. Ivy hit me the moment she walked in!" Ivy cried, sniffing and tugging at Adrian's sleeve as she tattled. Rosie spoke up timidly, tears welling up in her eyes: "Daddy, it was this auntie who bullied me..." Violet said nothing. She laid Rosie back on the hospital bed and gently patted her, soothing her quietly. "Addie!" Ivy wailed. Adrian looked at her coldly. "Go. Now." Ivy stood there, fury and frustration flashing in her eyes, but eventually, she turned and walked out, seething. Violet met Adrian's gaze and saw the irritation and displeasure in his eyes. "Violet, there's a limit to everything. Don't push it," Adrian said. Violet started to argue. "She just bullied Rosie, don't you believe Rosie?" "Rosie's only four. Stop encouraging her to act like this. This is the last time. Don't mistreat Ivy again," Adrian said. He put down the cake he had brought and walked away. Violet couldn't move for a long time. It wasn't the first time Ivy had framed her. But before this, Adrian would always stroke her head and say, "I know it wasn't you. Of course I believe you." It turned out he had never believed her at all. Before, he had only pretended. Now he couldn't even be bothered to pretend. "Mommy, is Daddy angry? Is it because of Rosie? I'm sorry…" Rosie asked. "No, sweetheart. You don't need to say sorry. Mommy's sorry. Mommy's so sorry," Violet whispered, holding Rosie tightly, her eyes burning red. She stayed by Rosie's bedside until morning. The next day, Ivy came to the hospital room again. Violet had just woken from a nightmare, frowning as she looked up. "You're feeling pretty smug right now, aren't you? Addie gave me attitude because of you," Ivy said. "I know your type, the kind who clings to money once they've snagged a rich husband. But the Blake family doesn't acknowledge you, and Addie's losing interest fast. That Mrs. Blake title is going to be mine eventually!" The first thing Violet did was cover Rosie's ears. Even she was surprised at how calm her own voice sounded. "I asked him for a divorce. Once Rosie's surgery is over, you can have whatever you want." Ivy's expression flickered, not with joy but with irritation. "A clever move, I see. You really know how to marry into money. But I'd think twice if I were you. Today I'm going to show you exactly who Addie cares about more!" Violet's heart lurched. Before she could react, Ivy bolted out the door and slammed it shut behind her. The door clicked, locked from the outside. What was she doing? Violet figured it out fast enough. Smoke seeped under the door and alarms shrieked. She grabbed Rosie and hammered on the door. "Help! Someone! Please!" Adrian came running, instinctively heading for the hospital room, but Ivy was lying in the doorway, blocking his path. "My foot… I think it's sprained… Addie, please help me!" Ivy cried. Adrian froze. Violet's heart nearly stopped. "Adrian Blake! You don't have to save me, but get Rosie out first!" "Her child is a child too, isn't mine? Addie… I'm pregnant," Ivy said. Adrian's pupils dilated. He bent and picked Ivy up. "Violet, hold on! I'll be right back!" he cried. "You bastard! You don't deserve to be a father!" Violet shouted. In the hospital room, Violet was nearly losing her mind. She slammed her body hard against the door, but Adrian did not look back. Of course he wouldn't. At this point, how could she still expect him to? Rosie coughed, choking slightly, and in that instant, Violet's scattered thoughts snapped back into focus. She turned and looked toward the window. After getting Ivy to safety, Adrian tried to go back, but firefighters held him back. "Are you insane? The fire's spreading. If you go in, you'll die!" one cried. "My wife and child are in there!" Adrian shouted.
