Darkness. Silence. Weightlessness.
Captain Elias Voss gasped as awareness returned. His body felt unanchored, floating in an abyss of nothingness. The Aurora was gone. The crew was gone.
Or were they?
A flickering pulse of light cut through the void. Shapes began to form—warped, incomplete, as if reality itself was trying to reconstruct itself. Voss saw flashes of the bridge, fractured like a shattered mirror.
A voice whispered through the emptiness. “Wake.”
Voss’s vision snapped into focus. He was back on the bridge, but something was… wrong. The colors seemed off, like everything was submerged in deep water. His crew was here—Dr. Sienna Rao, Commander Rena Holt, Engineer Darius Ng, and the others—but they were frozen in place, caught in mid-motion like statues.
Only Luma, the ship’s AI, seemed unaffected. Her holographic form flickered uncertainly. “Captain, are you functional?”
Voss shook his head, trying to steady his thoughts. “What happened?”
Luma’s voice carried an edge of uncertainty—something rare for an AI. “We were pulled into an unknown gravitational phenomenon. The ship’s sensors cannot determine our location.” A pause. “We are… outside known space.”
Voss turned to the crew. “Why aren’t they moving?”
Before Luma could answer, the lights dimmed. A distortion rippled through the bridge.
And the Echo appeared again.
Its form was even less stable now, shifting in and out of existence like a signal struggling to hold frequency. Its voice echoed directly in Voss’s mind.
“You have crossed the Rift. You are between.”
Dr. Rao suddenly gasped, as if breaking free from a spell. Then the others began stirring, shaking off their strange paralysis.
Holt grabbed her console. “What the hell just happened?”
The Echo pulsed. “Your reality is fraying. What you call the ‘universe’ is not alone. There are fractures. We are in one now.”
Ng cursed under his breath. “A space between universes? That’s impossible.”
