Those had been Alex’s words, and they came back to Day in a flash of illumination as he drove to the Elias house soon after Alex and Kate had left. Could Michael’s source have been Elias? Had Day been careless and failed to see something important in the papers? Perhaps there was some small reference which he had failed to see. ‘Only connect’. It was a quote from Day’s favourite English novelist, E. M. Forster, and had become his mantra as a student. In Day’s line of work, the need to make connections was essential. Perhaps he was losing his edge.
