Pater Giannis walked solemnly into the taverna and Vasilios rose to greet him with hand outstretched. Day and Helen stood too, greeted the priest, and they sat down together. Day made the story as concise as he could and outlined his request, not omitting a warning that some danger was involved. Giannis raised his brows at this and lowered his chin, as if looking at Day over the rim of non-existent spectacles. He reminded Day that he was a broad-minded man, and his first thought was for Petros, who still had religious beliefs and was entitled to the help of the church.
