Just over a half-hour later, Ray and Br’er appeared in the kitchen. “Didn’t expect you so soon,” Mazie said over her shoulder as she turned from the stove. “What did ya do, settle for a quickie?” “As if it’s any of your business.” Br’er walked to the counter and poured himself a cup of coffee. Ray put the breakfast tray he was carrying down on the counter. “Thanks for the treat this morning, Mazie. I’m loving being a part of your traditions.” He kissed her on the cheek. “You’re welcome,” she said with a smile. “Have a seat, Ray. Breakfast is almost ready. Br’er, make yourself useful and fix the mimosas.” Ray sat down, Br’er did as he’d been told, and Mazie carried platters of French toast, scrambled eggs, and bacon to the table.
