Chapter 5

1100 Words
The next morning, Brielle could hardly focus. She sat at her dining table, absentmindedly stirring her cup of coffee. The events of last night replayed over and over in her mind. The way Owen had looked at her, the way he had gotten so close—close enough to kiss her—and then pulled back, leaving her more confused than ever. Her phone buzzed on the table, jolting her out of her thoughts. It was a message from Jessica. Jess: "Are we still on for brunch today?" Brielle smiled despite herself. She had forgotten about their plans. Maybe some time with Jessica was exactly what she needed to clear her head. She quickly typed back a response and grabbed her things, eager for the distraction. --- A short while later, Brielle met Jessica at their favorite café, a cozy little spot tucked away from the busy city streets. As soon as she sat down, Jessica raised an eyebrow, her face already suspicious. “What’s up with you?” Jessica asked, leaning forward. “Something happened at the office, right?” Brielle bit her lip, her mind flashing back to the night before. She debated for a moment whether to tell Jessica everything, but there was no point in hiding it. Jessica was her best friend, and she could always tell when something was off. “It’s my boss,” Brielle finally admitted, her voice quieter than usual. Jessica’s eyes widened with interest. “Owen? What did he do this time? Work you into the ground again?” Brielle shook her head, her cheeks flushing slightly. “No… it’s not about work. It’s more… personal.” “Personal?” Jessica’s eyebrows shot up even higher. “Okay, now I’m intrigued. Spill it.” Brielle took a deep breath and leaned in closer, lowering her voice. “Last night, we were both working late. He came into my office, and it wasn’t like our usual interactions. He was… different. He wasn’t cold or distant. He—he was watching me, really watching me. It felt like there was something between us, Jess. Something more.” Jessica blinked, then leaned back in her chair with a satisfied grin. “Oh my God, Brielle. Are you serious? The Owen Walton was actually acting like a human being?” Brielle couldn’t help but laugh at Jessica’s teasing, but the knot of confusion in her stomach remained. “I don’t know what to make of it. One moment, it felt like he might kiss me, and then he just… stopped. It’s like he was toying with me, but not in a cruel way. I don’t know how to explain it.” Jessica’s smile faded into something more thoughtful. “Well, it sounds like he’s starting to see you in a different light. Maybe the all-business, no-nonsense Owen is starting to crack.” Brielle shook her head, staring into her coffee. “But that’s the thing. I don’t want to be just some office fling to him. I don’t even know if I’m ready to think about him that way.” “Hey, I get it,” Jessica said, reaching across the table to squeeze Brielle’s hand. “But from the sound of it, there’s definitely something there. Maybe he’s noticing you as more than just his employee.” Brielle sighed. “That’s what I’m afraid of. Things would get so complicated if—” She trailed off, her thoughts swirling. “I’m already confused about how I feel. One minute I hate him for being so arrogant and overbearing, and the next… I don’t know. I’m drawn to him.” Jessica smiled sympathetically. “Sounds like you’re in a bit of a dilemma. But you don’t have to figure everything out right now. Just take things slow, see where it goes. Maybe you need some time away from the office.” Brielle nodded, appreciating Jessica’s support. “Yeah, maybe.” But even as she tried to convince herself that she could take things slow, the memory of Owen’s intense gaze last night refused to leave her mind. There was something happening between them—something that scared her and excited her at the same time. --- Later that day, after brunch, Brielle found herself walking back toward her apartment, her thoughts still jumbled. She was about to unlock her door when her phone buzzed. She glanced down, her breath catching as she saw Owen’s name flash across the screen. Owen: "I need you to meet me tomorrow at the office, 8 am sharp. We need to discuss the details of the upcoming deal." Brielle stared at the message, her heart pounding in her chest. There was nothing unusual about the text—just a work-related instruction, the same as always. But after what happened last night, everything felt different. She couldn’t shake the feeling that their next encounter would be anything but ordinary. Her fingers hovered over the screen for a moment before she typed out a quick response. Brielle: "I’ll be there." As she set her phone down, Brielle leaned back against the door, closing her eyes for a moment. Whatever was happening between her and Owen, she knew one thing for sure—it was only the beginning. --- Owen sat in his penthouse, nursing a glass of bourbon as he stared out over the city skyline. His mind, usually consumed with business and strategy, kept drifting back to Brielle. Last night had been unexpected. He had walked into her office fully intent on keeping things professional. She was efficient, dedicated—exactly what he needed in an employee. But then he saw her, sitting alone in that dimly lit office, her features softened by the glow of the lamp, and something had shifted. It wasn’t just the way she looked. It was the way she carried herself, the quiet strength in her eyes. He had noticed it before, but last night, it had felt different. Personal. Owen frowned, swirling the amber liquid in his glass. This wasn’t like him. He was always in control—of himself, of his emotions. But Brielle… she was starting to get under his skin, and that wasn’t something he could afford. He thought about how close he had gotten to her, how he had nearly kissed her. He had pulled back at the last second, but the desire to cross that line still lingered, simmering just beneath the surface. For the first time in a long while, Owen didn’t know what his next move would be. And that unsettled him more than he cared to admit.
