Anana blinked.
"What?"
Lucien's eyes narrowed slightly.
"What are you thinking about?"
For a moment, she looked away.
And that alone told him everything he needed to know.
The concern in his gaze deepened.
Because now he was certain… Something was bothering her.
His grip tightened ever so slightly around her hand.
"My woman..."
The words came out low and gentle.
Lucien lifted his free hand and carefully tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear.
His fingers lingered for a moment.
A small breath escaped Anana.
A faint smile touched his lips.
"You forget who you're talking to."
His gaze remained fixed on hers.
"I've spent too many years loving you to miss a face like this."
His thumb brushed lightly against her cheek.
"You can smile for the entire world if you want."
His voice softened further.
"But you can't hide from me."
The warmth in his eyes never wavered.
"So tell me what's troubling you."
Neither of them rushed the silence.
Lucien simply waited.
And eventually...
Anana relented.
"It's about Anastasia."
The change in Lucien was immediate.
One moment, he was simply her husband… The next, he was Lucien Kael.
Every trace of amusement vanished from his face as though it had never been there to begin with.
His posture straightened instinctively.
The warmth in his eyes sharpened into something far more dangerous.
"What happened?"
The question came instantly.
His grip on her hand tightened before he even realized it.
A thousand possibilities had already flashed through his mind in the span of a heartbeat.
Was she hurt?
Had someone threatened her?
Had something happened at the academy?
The room itself seemed to grow heavier.
Because there was one thing everyone who knew Lucien understood.
He was patient with many things.
Forgiving with a select few. But when it came to Anastasia...
Reason often arrived several seconds after his protective instincts.
His gaze searched Anana's face intensely.
Bracing himself for whatever answer came next.
"What happened?"
He asked again, quieter this time.
And that was what finally did it.
Anana couldn't help laughing.
A soft laugh escaped her before she could stop it.
The contrast was simply too much…
One moment she had mentioned Anastasia's name… The next, Lucien looked ready to march across the continent and personally deal with whatever… or whoever… had caused the problem.
The fierce concern in his eyes was impossible to miss. So was the way his entire body had already shifted into action.
Immediately, Anana reached up and lightly brushed his arm.
The gesture was both affectionate and reassuring.
"It's not that kind of problem."
Lucien paused.
The words reached him.
Slowly, some of the tension eased from his shoulders… Not all of it… But just enough.
Anana shook her head, a faint smile lingering on her lips.
Sometimes she forgot just how deeply he loved their daughter.
Then moments like this reminded her.
"She's fine," Anana assured him gently.
Only then did the hard edge in Lucien's gaze begin to soften, the tension in his shoulders easing little by little.
A small smile touched Anana's lips.
Then she slipped off the edge of the table and made her way towards one of the large fur chairs positioned beside the window.
Warm afternoon sunlight streamed through the glass, spilling across the room in soft golden bands.
Lucien followed without a word.
A moment later, he settled into the chair beside hers.
For a few seconds, neither of them spoke.
Then Anana drew a quiet breath.
"She told me about her first day at the academy."
Lucien's attention sharpened immediately… He listened.
And Anana told him everything. About…
The officials…
The students…
The expectations…
The whispers…
The assumptions…
The invisible weight that seemed to follow Anastasia everywhere she went.
How people seemed to believe they already understood who she was before she ever spoke a single word…
How every introduction somehow began and ended the same way… Lucien Kael's daughter.
Again! And again!! And again!!!
Until it felt as though nobody was seeing Anastasia at all… Only the shadow cast by her father's name.
Anana's voice softened as she continued.
And eventually, she reached the part that mattered most.
"She's afraid."
Lucien frowned immediately.
Anana nodded.
"Not of failing."
A brief pause settled between them.
"She's afraid people will never actually know her."
The room grew quieter.
Outside, the distant sounds of the pack carried faintly through the open windows.
Inside, neither of them moved.
"She's afraid that whenever people look at her..."
Anana's voice gentled.
"...all they'll ever see is the Alpha God of War's daughter."
Silence followed… Heavy and thoughtful.
Lucien sat motionless.
His gaze drifted towards the window, though it was clear he wasn't seeing the courtyard beyond it.
He was thinking.
Then…
"I'll speak to the officials."
The response came instantly. Without hesitation or even a moment's consideration.
Anana laughed softly.
"Lucien."
"What?"
His expression remained perfectly serious.
Which only made her laugh harder.
"You cannot solve everything by intimidating people."
A faint crease appeared between his brows.
"I'm not intimidating them."
"You absolutely are."
Lucien opened his mouth… Then closed it.
Because unfortunately… She was right.
Anana smiled.
"No."
She gently shook her head.
"That would only make things worse."
Lucien frowned.
The answer clearly dissatisfied him.
"Then what do we do?"
For a moment, Anana didn't answer.
Her gaze drifted towards the window, towards the distant courtyard below.
When she finally spoke, her voice carried a quiet certainty.
"I think this is one of those battles she needs to fight herself."
The words were difficult to say. Because neither of them liked seeing Anastasia struggle.
Neither of them enjoyed standing back when they could intervene. But some lessons couldn't be taught.
They had to be lived.
"She needs to overcome this."
Lucien remained silent… Listening.
Anana reached across the space between them and took his hand.
Her fingers slipped between his.
"Not because we're abandoning her."
She gave his hand a gentle squeeze.
"But because this is part of becoming who she's meant to be."
Lucien stared at their joined hands for a moment before lifting his gaze.
"And if she needs us?"
Anana smiled.
"Then she'll find us exactly where we've always been."
A brief silence followed.
Lucien's brow furrowed slightly.
"And where is that?"
The smile on Anana's face softened.
She squeezed his hand gently again.
"Close enough to help."
A pause…
"Far enough to let her become her own person."
Lucien held her gaze.
Then, slowly, he nodded.
A quiet understanding passed between them.
Then…
Rumble!
Both of them paused.
The sound came from outside…
Their heads turned towards the window almost simultaneously.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then came the familiar sound of the Crimson Blood Pack's gates opening.
A second later, carriage wheels rolled across stone, the noise echoing through the fortress grounds.
Both Lucien and Anana recognized it immediately.
A smile found its way onto Anana's face.
Across from her, Lucien's expression softened into one of his own.
After all, they had just spent the last several minutes talking about their daughter.
Their eyes met.
Then, at the exact same moment, they spoke.
"Looks like Anastasia is back."
The words overlapped perfectly.
A small laugh escaped Anana.
Lucien shook his head faintly.
Neither of them had planned to say it… It had simply happened.
Outside, the carriage continued across the courtyard.
Inside, the atmosphere seemed lighter somehow.
The concerns they had been discussing moments ago suddenly felt less distant.
Because the person at the center of all those concerns was no longer miles away at the academy.
She was home.
And somehow...
Neither of them realized just how eager they already were to hear about the rest of her day.
