Chapter 4: The Terms of Surrender

725 Words
The interior of the limousine was a fortress of leather and smoked glass. Elena sat on one side, her boots resting casually on the expensive floor mats, while Dante sat opposite her, pouring two glasses of sparkling water from a built-in crystal decanter. He handed her a glass. She took it, but set it down on the console without drinking. "Smart," Dante observed. "Never accept a drink from a monster." "You're not a monster, Marchetti. You're just a businessman with a body count," Elena countered, leaning her head back against the leather seat. "Let's skip the small talk. What's the real angle here? You don't take a college girl out to breakfast just because her dead brother owed you money. You have hundreds of collectors for that." Dante took a slow sip of his water, his eyes never leaving her face. "You're right. I have men who break knees for breakfast. But none of those men have your driving skills. And none of them have your... composure." He leaned forward, placing his elbows on his knees. "Last night, my men killed four people in that warehouse. You didn't scream. You didn't wet yourself. You calculated your exit velocity, evaluated the threat of my weapons, and negotiated a twelve-thousand-dollar fee with a gun pointed at your windshield. That isn't normal, Elena." "Normal doesn't pay the rent," she said coldly. "No, it doesn't. But talent like yours shouldn't be wasted dealing cards to degenerate gamblers in backrooms," Dante said, his voice dropping an octave. "I am currently restructuring my transportation network. I need drivers who don't panic under fire. Drivers who can carry sensitive packages across state lines without drawing the attention of the feds or rival families." Elena laughed, a sharp, cynical sound. "You want me to be your getaway driver? Your smuggler?" "I want you under my employment," Dante corrected. "And under my protection." "And if I say no?" Dante’s expression hardened, the playful glint in his eyes vanishing, replaced by the terrifying, glacial cold of The Ghost. "If you say no, the debt is called in immediately. Sixty-four thousand dollars. If you cannot pay it by sunset, my associates will take your car, your apartment, and then... they will take whatever value is left of you. Do I make myself clear?" The threat was explicit. It was brutal. Elena felt a flash of genuine anger spike through her. She leaned forward, mirroring his posture, their faces mere inches apart. "You think you can scare me into being your pet?" "I don't want a pet, Elena. I want an equal who knows her place," Dante whispered, his gaze dropping to her lips before snapping back to her eyes. "You aren't a saint. Stop pretending you belong in that university. You belong in the dark with me." Elena stared at him, evaluating her options. She had none. Sixty-four thousand dollars was an impossible sum. If she refused, she was dead or worse. If she accepted, she was tying herself to the most dangerous man in the city. But as she looked at Dante's harsh, devastatingly handsome face, a dark, wicked part of her—the part that loved the thrill of a blind corner at a hundred miles an hour—whispered that this might just be the ride of her life. "Fine," Elena said, her voice sharp as steel. "I'll drive for you. But under my rules. I don't wear a uniform, I don't do hits, and you don't touch me unless I say so." Dante’s eyes flared with a dangerous, possessive hunger. He reached out, his hand wrapping firmly around the back of her neck, pulling her forward until her forehead rested against his. "We'll start with those rules, tesoro," Dante murmured, his grip tight, claiming her. "But let me promise you something right now. Before this semester is over, you will beg me to touch you. You will beg me to take everything you have." "Don't hold your breath, Marchetti," Elena whispered back, her heart racing as she gripped his lapels, refusing to back down. The limousine pulled up to a high-end, private restaurant downtown, the city lights reflecting off the dark windows, sealing them away in their own dangerous world.
