A new friendship

It’s a quiet moment as Amelia stands by the front door waiting for Mr Roberts to answer, she finds herself lost in her own thoughts. Still questioning whether or not she made the correct decision to stay at home rather than going with her family to see her mothers grave. Suddenly the rattling sound of the front door chain makes Amelia jump slightly and lose her train of thought. The door swings opened with Mr Roberts standing on the other side. Amelia takes a deep breath in, slightly nervous of his reaction to seeing her. Just before the door opens she clears her throat,  “Hello, how are you feeling this morning?” she says softly with a sympathetic look. Mr Roberts, pale faced with white lips, eyes baggy, stands and looks at Amelia with a puzzled look. “Um yeah, I'm fine thanks”. He says rather dazed and not quite with it like he had just woken up. “I'm sorry, did I wake you, it’s just I thought you might like some chocolates to help cheer you up.” Mr Roberts surprised and with a slightly confused look on his face. Upon noticing his reaction, she felt the need to explain herself further, so just like last night she goes on a nervous ramble again “it's just because last night you said you were having a bad night and I just thought maybe you would like some chocolates if not chocolates I could always go to the shop and get something else maybe sweets or flowers or maybe some sorta….” he puts up his hand to stop her and smiles and says “haven't we already done this”. she pauses and looks at the chocolates in her hand, they both have a little chuckle  “well, they usually cheer me up.” “They are lovely thank you” “He sort of shakes his head to help wake himself up. “You’re a kind spirit, I'm sure you have more important things to do than worry about an old fool like myself.”  The sun was deceivingly shiny as the cold air shook the autumn trees. “It’s pretty chilly out there, would you like to come inside for a nice warm cuppa tea.” Amelia realises that her neighbour is lonely and just wants some company and accepts his offer. “Please sit, I will go stick the kettle on.” he rushes off to the kitchen to make the tea. It's only now Amelia realises how alone her neighbour really is. Looks like the house has not been tidied in years. Dirty clothes on the floor, dirty mugs sitting on the side, lots of scribbles on white paper laid out across the coffee table. Mr Roberts shouts from the kitchen. “ please make yourself comfortable, sorry about the mess it's been difficult ever since …..” suddenly it goes quiet like he had forgotten what to say. “Did you want sugar in your tea.” Amelia staring at the pictures intensely trying to understand what it is she is actually looking at. She lifts her head to answer but is greeted with a dim blue light appearing on the outer sides of the closed basement door “Um, Mr Roberts.” Amelia slowly starts walking towards the door in slight hesitation and curiosity, amazed and confused she is drawn to the light like a magnet.  Not realising what's going on Mr Roberts carries on chatting. “I know it's a bit of a mess but this place was once pristine, my wife, Sue, she was amazing….” Amelia now starting to feel a bit more worried than before cuts him off. “Mr Roberts what is this blue light coming from the basement.” Mr Roberts dropped the cup of tea he was holding in his hands. Almost slow motion as time just stopped. “Could it be, does it work” SMASH!! The mugs hit the floor. Mr Roberts rushed over beside Amelia with an exhilarated look upon his face, his heart beating faster than ever before. This could be it, his greatest achievement came to life. “Amelia you should go home.” her eyes are still drawn to the blue light around the door. “What is that light, It's like it's, calling me?.” They both slowly approach the door together, anticipating, ready for the unexpected. Suddenly, the door swings opened unaided, A faint ghostly  voice comes from the basement.
