Amelia

779 Words
Next door at 47 Banbury Road lived a young girl called Amelia, who sits alone in her bedroom, earphones plugged in listening to her favourite songs on her phone, her small 24” television left on merely for background noise. Her music was interrupted by a text alert from a young lad called Damien who lives just down the bottom of the street. “Yo bbz, mum n dad doing me ed in, wanna meet up  ?” ending his message with a winky face emoji. Amelia, a university drop out replies to his message “yeah sure what did you have in mind?” before letting out a light sigh “What am I doing?” she said to herself in a soft quiet voice before ending the text also with a winky face, her thumb hovering over the send button debating whether or not to hit it, after about 30 seconds she decided to send the message.  Amelia stands up, walks over to her wardrobe that stands from floor to ceiling as it fills out her whole side wall, reaches right to the back hanger as if she was hiding this outfit from someone, this outfit consists of  a short skirt that's not even low enough to cover her knees and a plain blue low cut top or as she would call it “my lucky outfit”, suddenly Amelia hears the footsteps of her dad walking up the stairs, she quickly chucks her outfit back inside her wardrobe and jumps back onto her bed pretending to watch the tele just in time before her dad enters. Amelia’s dad wasn't the tallest of dads, clean shaven face with longish black curly hair.  “Hey dad whats up?” She lays on her bed trying to hide the fact that she was about to leave the house at ten o’clock at night to meet up with a boy. “ you've been pretty quiet up here most of the night so I just thought I would come up and make sure you’re okay”. Amelia’s dad enters into her room and sits at the bottom of her single sized bed. “Yeah I'm fine thanks dad, you and Toby were watching the football, so I thought I might as well come up stairs and listen to a bit of music before watching a little tele then finally off to bed”. Amelia's dad just looks at her before giving off the biggest goofiest smile,”you remind me so much of your mother, she was beautiful too” a slight tear appeared in both Amelia and her dad's eyes, “When you guys where little your mum use to always tell you a bedtime story before bed and after that she would tell you in the softest of voices “whenever you get lonely or scared think of me...”  Suddenly both Amelia and her dad finished the end of the sentence together with “and i will be there”. Both Amelia and her dad were wearing huge beaming smiles from ear to ear as they shared this memory of her mother. They then embraced in a tight hug as they squeezed each other close, wrapping their arms around one another like they never wanted to let go. “I'm sorry Amelia, I was never good at the emotional side of things, I am trying and if you ever need me I am always here for you, you know that right?” Amelia gives a nod towards her father, acknowledging she understands and appreciates he is trying his best without even saying a single word. “I mean give me a knock knock book or a good old fashion dad joke and I'm all set” Amelia couldn't stop herself from letting out a little laugh as they both disengaged from the hug.  “Right, it's getting late, so don't be up too much later please” both still wearing their smiles. Before he could turn around and shut the door, Amelia shouts to her father “Dad!” he turns round. “Yeah?” her dad replied looking emotionally exhausted, “I love you dad” his face beaming with happiness as he has his proud dad moment. “I love you too sweetheart, now get some rest it's getting late” he turns off the lights and shuts the door behind him. As Amelia climbs under her baggy warm duvet, switches off the tele and lays her head on the soft pillow before eventually drifting off to sleep with a smile on her face.
