The Unlikely Friendship

“AAAHHH!!” Both Mr Roberts and Amelia scare one another, a few seconds go by. They try to catch their breaths. “What the bloody hell are you doing in my house?” he looks at her with a confused look on his face, “you’re the girl from next door right?” trying his best to hold onto a single thought. “What time is it?” his hand placed over his heart as he felt it beating out of his chest. Without even taking a breathe and pumped with a rush of adrenaline Amelia attempts to answer him, forcing out her explanation as quickly as possible to justify coming into his house at an ungodly hour, “I'm so so sorry I didn't mean to scare you I just heard a loud bang and it woke me and I thought you was in danger so I came over to make sure you was okay turns out you are okay thank god which means I could of stayed in my nice warm bed after all which then leads us to now I'm here in your house in the middle of the night and I'm sorry for intruding inside your lovely home and it is a lovely home but…. ” confused and overwhelmed with information he stops her mad rambling by simply putting up his hand, telling her “it's okay calm down”. She then eventually takes a massive intake of breath, in and out to steady herself.  Mr Roberts lets out a slight smile of amusement. Suddenly the tension in the house eases as both parties lower their guard and feel a bit more relaxed both nervously laughing at one another.  “It's okay, it's Amelia isn't it ??” he asks “yes sir” Ameila replied trying to be as polite as possible.  “Thank you for checking in on me. You are a very kind soul, just having a rough night, I'm sorry for waking you” as he slurs a few of his words, trying very hard to hide his drunkenness from her. Although she realised he was slightly drunk she couldn't help but feel sorry for him, he looked rough but at the same time she could tell he was kindhearted. At this point she notices his tear stained face, “you know if you need some company you can always come over to ours, on Thursday we have a game night where dad and Toby always get very competitive, it always ends badly which is so much fun, I'm sure dad wont mind” he was stunned by her kindness, someone so young but so selfless. “You truly are a remarkable kid, but I'm okay thank you”. Amelia looks at him knowing she can't do anymore “ well if you are sure you’re okay I’m gonna go back home and to bed before me dad realises I’m up.”  Mr Roberts nods in an agreement as he walks her to the door. Before Amelia leaves she takes one last turn at trying to cheer him up, “you know sir people are not meant to be alone, we are happiest when we share our happiness with our friends and family” she smiles at him “sleep well” Mr Roberts whispers under his breath “sleep well dear child” before shutting the door closed.   As Amelia lays in her bed looking up at the ceiling  she can’t help but worry about her neighbour. “Why was he shouting? Why was he crying? Does he need help? Is he in trouble?” all these questions raced through Amelia's mind. “I know” she said, coming up with an idea.  “I will go round there tomorrow with some chocolates for a proper apology whilst in the meantime making sure he is okay, yeah that's a good idea Amelia” looking rather pleased with herself before rolling over, facing her bedroom window looking up at the night sky closing her eyes and once again falling asleep.
