I run to the window and open the curtain, hearing Linton’s footsteps walking away. I watch him as he disappears into the thick forest, and I swallow hard, placing my hand over my stomach, feeling a knot at the unsettling feeling of being alone.
"Nothing is going to happen, Veil. He’s not going to be gone for long," I whisper, trying to shake off the feeling of fear, but it’s not working. I get away from the window, suddenly feeling like someone is watching me, and I head to the bathroom. I sit on the bed, but the lights are too bright, so I get up and turn some of them off while reminding myself again that Linton will be back soon.
